The Premier League has released a statement confirming that a third transfer window will be available for clubs.
England’s top-flight has revealed that a special 10-day window will be available to teams in what has been called an “exceptional registration period”.
Why is there an extra transfer window?
The extra transfer window has been included in the Premier League calendar to allow clubs competing in the FIFA Club World Cup in the USA to add new players to their squad prior to the competition.
It is expected that other leagues that have participants in the expanded competition will follow this lead, giving some of the top clubs in the world the opportunity to trade players.
What players could move?
This new transfer period is likely to be extensively used when it comes to players with expiring contracts who will not take part in the competition.
For example, it will likely provide Real Madrid the chance to sign Liverpool’s Trent Alexander-Arnold before the competition begins. Al-Hilal could also add Mohamed Salah to their ranks if rumours of the Reds star moving to the Saudi Pro League come to fruition.
Such moves will not be big-money transfers given the players involved will have a matter of days left on their existing deals.
But there is also the possibility of some blockbuster transfers getting down early in the summer, with Manchester City, Chelsea and even PSG among the potential big spenders.
Premier League statement on summer transfer windows
The Premier League confirmed the presence of an additional transfer period in the summer of 2025, which will feature a six-day break between windows.
In a statement, it confirmed:
“Premier League clubs have today [27 March] agreed the dates for the Summer 2025 Transfer Window.
“The window will open early, between Sunday 1 June and Tuesday 10 June, due to an exceptional registration period relating to the FIFA Club World Cup.
“It will then reopen on Monday 16 June and close on Monday 1 September.”
The Premier League has confirmed the dates of the summer and winter transfer windows for next season.
The first window of the 2024/25 campaign will open on June 14 and close on August 30 at 11pm.
The deadline for deals to be signed in the summer has been brought forward from September 1 in 2023 to the final Friday in August this time around.
The Premier League said: “To ensure harmonisation with the major leagues in Europe, the closing dates were set following discussions with the EFL, DFL (Bundesliga), Serie A, La Liga, and LFP (Ligue 1), who will all close their summer and winter windows on 30 August and 3 February respectively.”
The winter window will open on New Year’s Day and shut on Monday, February 3.
The most recent January transfer window saw a decline in the overall number of permanent moves — with just £112million ($143m) spent across the Premier League.
28 signings were made by Premier League clubs and 13 of them were loans, while over half of the top flight did not spend anything.
Premier League clubs spent £2.5bn ($3.1bn) on transfers across last season’s two windows — more than any other league in the world — but the new threat of points deductions for breaching profit and sustainability rules is expected to be a significant consideration for clubs going forward.

The 2025 summer transfer window promises to be another busy period. However, due to the influence of the FIFA Club World Cup it will look a little different to usual.
The first games are being played on June 15, and the clubs involved need to be able to sign players to take part. So FIFA have given member associations with clubs in the Club World Cup the right to apply an additional registration period from June 1 to 10, though there is no obligation to do so.
In addition, FIFA has a clause in the Club World Cup regulations which allows clubs to replace players on their squad lists whose contracts have naturally expired in the period June 27 to July 3, which may also influence transfer business.
Usually, most leagues in Europe open their windows on July 1, while the general deadline for closing is one day later than usual this year — on Monday, Sept. 1 — because Aug. 31 falls on a Sunday.
The closing date was set following discussions between the top five European leagues. Other associations can still choose to end the window at a later date than Sept. 1.
Clubs in all leagues will still be able to sign players as free agents after the deadline, and as long as they are not officially attached to any club when the window closes.
Deals can be agreed between leagues with transfer windows which are closed. They will be officially completed if or when the signing club’s window is open.
