With the advent of wireless technology, Wi-Fi is increasingly becoming the most preferred method of connection. With a Linksys router one can connect multiple PCs on a single network. Sometimes, however, you may find that can’t ping a computer on same network. This issue is usually accompanied by an error message notifying you of a network timeout, in this article we will give a few methods to fix the issue.
How to ping a computer on the same network?
Check the ICMP settings
-
If you are unable to ping computer on same network, begin by checking the ICMP settings of Windows. To do so, click Start > Run > firewall.cpl > Advanced > Settings. The only option that should be checked is Allow incoming echo request.
-
Make sure that your changes are saved, and exit the window. You should now be able to ping other PCs on your network.
Note: This method should work for Windows 11, Windows 10, Windows 7 and other versions of Windows.
Disable the IPv6
- Select the network icon on your taskbar and choose your network.
- Go to the change adapter options menu.
- Select properties by right clicking on your connection.
- Find the Internet Protocol Version 6 and then disable it.
You may also need to do this on the other computers connected to your network.
Temporarily disable your VPN
VPNs are becoming more common amongst internet users. In this instance, the VPN may be preventing you from being able to ping other computers on your network. You can check if this is the case by disabling your VPN and then trying to ping your computer.
How to run a ping network test?
If you want to do a ping network test, on Windows you can do this from going into the Search taskbar:
- Enter «cmd» for the Command Prompt
- Open the Command Prompt
- Enter «ping» and the hit space bar
- Then enter the IP address of the network that you want to ping.
- A review will then be displayed with the results.
Detailed examples of terminal commands
To ping a computer on the same network, you can use the command prompt or terminal in your operating system. Here’s how to do it:
Windows:
- Press the Win+R keys to open the Run dialog box.
- Type «cmd» and press Enter to open the Command Prompt.
- In the Command Prompt window, type the following command and press Enter:
ping <IP_address>

macOS and Linux:
- Open the Terminal. You can find it in the Applications folder on macOS or by searching for «Terminal» on Linux.
- In the Terminal window, type the following command and press Enter:
ping <IP_address>
- Replace <IP_address> with the actual IP address of the computer you want to ping.

If you’re using Windows 10 and want to check your ping, you’re in luck because it’s pretty straightforward. Ping is a handy tool that helps you see how fast data is traveling from your computer to another server. It’s like checking the speed of your internet highway. To check your ping, you’ll need to use the Command Prompt. Don’t worry; it’s not as scary as it sounds. Just open the Command Prompt, type a simple command, and voilà! You’ll have your ping results in a jiffy.
If you’re looking to test your internet connection speed or troubleshoot a network issue, checking your ping on Windows 10 is a great place to start. Follow these steps to get it done quickly and easily.
Step 1: Open the Command Prompt
Start by opening the Command Prompt on your Windows 10 computer.
To do this, type “cmd” in the search box next to the Start menu, then click on “Command Prompt” from the search results. This will open a black window where you can enter commands.
Step 2: Enter the Ping Command
Type “ping” followed by a space and then the website or IP address you want to test.
For example, you could type “ping google.com” to test your connection to Google. This command will send packets of data to the website and measure how long it takes to get a response.
Step 3: View the Results
Hit the Enter key to run the command and view the results.
You’ll see a series of lines showing the time it took for each packet to travel to the server and back. This is your ping time, usually measured in milliseconds (ms).
Step 4: Analyze the Data
Look at the “time” section in the results to analyze your ping.
The lower the time, the better your connection speed. If the time is high, you might experience lag during online activities such as gaming or video conferencing.
Step 5: Close the Command Prompt
When you’re done, simply close the Command Prompt window.
You don’t need to save anything here. Just click the “X” in the top-right corner of the window or type “exit” and hit Enter.
After you complete these steps, you’ll have a clear understanding of your network’s performance. If your ping time is low, that means your network is working well. But if it’s high, you might notice slower speeds or lag during online activities. Keep in mind that several factors can impact your ping, such as your internet connection, the server location, and network congestion.
Tips for Checking Ping on Windows 10
- Use Different Servers: Test your ping using multiple servers to get a more accurate picture of your network performance.
- Check at Different Times: Conduct tests at different times of the day to identify any patterns or peak usage times.
- Close Background Apps: Before checking your ping, close any unnecessary apps to ensure they don’t affect the results.
- Use a Wired Connection: For more consistent results, try using a wired connection instead of Wi-Fi.
- Update Network Drivers: Make sure your network drivers are up-to-date, as outdated drivers can affect your ping.

Windows.
