Unable to install ‘install guest additions’ on xp
Hi,
I’m sure this is an easy fix but as a newbie can’t figure it out.
Basically, I’ve managed to successfully install windows xp on my machine.
However, the screen resolution is too small and I’ve can’t get ‘install guest additions’ to work.
How can I fix this? (attaching log files)
I did try to install it during the installation process but I couldn’t check the box for some reason. I’m very confused by this.
Another quick question, how can I get out of the virtual box window in XP so I can switch to windows 7 without doing ctrl+alt+del?

Make sure you have a virtual CD drive as part of the VM hardware recipe. All «Install Guest Additions» does is mount the VBoxGuestAdditions.iso cd image file in the VM. If nothing happens when you use this feature then autoplay is possibly disabled. In that case navigate to the CD drive and run the small installer .exe file manually.

thanks for the reply. I’m an UTTER novice so I get easily confused when things get too techie.
So let me get his straight, I am experiencing this problem because of my virtual cd drive? Is that correct?
My virtual machine is successfully installed as I was able to install xp successfully using my hard drive connected to my VM.
If this is not case when specifically do you mean? (in the plainest English possible. sorry )
Ok, I just watched a video on youtube and I checked my C:// drive and I don’t have a copy of small installer .exe file. Where can find one?

Actually this discussion is moot, because on examination of your log I see that you have already installed the VBox v4.1.18 GAs inside the XP guest. Why did you think it hadn’t worked?
To change the screen resolution (and color depth), right click the guest desktop, select «Properties» from the menu, when the dialog appears you next click the «Settings» tab. Make sure «Color quality» is set to «Highest (32bit)», set the display size (using the control bar on the left) to whatever you like. Remember to click «Apply».

I can see it was already installed
totally ‘my bad’
Another quick question the ‘install guest additions’ has finally appeared and I want to check the ‘direct 3d support’.
I try to select the check box and I get the following message.
‘Windows us currently not running in safe mode. So 3d support cannot be installed’
THIS is what I wanted resolve originally and got it confused with the ‘install guest additions’.
How do I resolve this issue.

To enable 3D graphics acceleration you must install the GAs in safe mode, after enabling 3D acceleration in the VM display settings.
- First unmount the GAs ISO which you still have mounted in the VM (use the Device menu).
- Uninstall the previous GAs using the guest control panel, add/remove programs.
- Shut down the VM, make sure 3D is enabled in VM settings.
- Start up the VM, hit F8 as soon as the guest begins to boot, hit F8 several times to be sure. You should get a menu on which is an option to start in safe mode — use that option.
- When the guest has finished booting in safe mode, use Device|Install Guest Additions again, and carefully follow the instructions.
- When that is done, restart the guest. If you get the boot menu again, select normal boot.
That should do it.

I’m not sure what you mean by this but I removed my cd drive. If the is wrong. Then my bad…what should I specifically do?

I went to the control panel and could not remove them because they were unavailable for me to remove.

I rebooted the machine, pressed f8 and could not get access to safe mode.

I think I already made the instructions as simple as I can within the scope of these forums. Perhaps you should get some local help.

Установка гостевых дополнений VirtualBox
Для улучшения работы с виртуальной машиной, и взаимодействия с ней, в виртуально установленной операционной системе нужно установить специальный набор инструментов, который называется «Гостевые дополнения» («Guest Additions»).
Данный набор инструментов поддерживает следующие операционные системы:
- Windows:

Для установки гостевых дополнений VirtualBox необходимо выполнить следующие действия:
- Включаем виртуальную машину и ждем загрузки ОС.
- В верхнем меню VirtualBox выбираем пункт «Устройства — Подключить образ диска Дополнений гостевой ОС…«.
Так же можно скачать отдельный образ с гостевыми дополнениями, перейдя по этой ссылке. После перехода по ссылке, нужно будет открыть директорию с нужной версией VirtualBox, и скачать файл, название которого будет начинаться на «VBoxGuestAdditions». После скачивания, данный файл нужно будет смонтировать вручную, как обычный ISO образ.
Дальнейшие действия зависят от того, какая операционная система установлена в VirtualBox:
Windows
- Если в системе не отключен автозапуск, то должен запуститься установщик дополнений гостевой ОС. Если же в системе выключен автозапуск, нужно запустить установщик вручную, найдя его на подключившемся диске в виртуальной машине, под именем VBoxWindowsAdditions.exe.
- Как и установка самого VirtualBox, установка гостевых дополнений максимально упрощена, и по сути представляет из себя нажатие кнопок «Next». С первым окном именно так и следует поступить.
- На следующем будет предложено выбрать место для установки гостевых дополнений. По умолчанию, рассматривается обычная для всех программ директория Program Files.
- Последним шагом, перед непосредственно самой установкой, будет выбор устанавливаемых компонентов:
- VirtualBox Guest Additions — собственно, сами гостевые дополнения VirtualBox;
- Start menu entries — ярлыки в меню «Пуск».
- Direct3D Support — третий компонент, который не выбран по умолчанию, является экспериментальной функцией по включению полноценного 3D ускорения в виртуальной машине. Для «простой» работы он не нужен.
- После нажатия на кнопку «Next» начнется установка гостевых дополнений, во время которой может появится окно с запросом на разрешения установки программного обеспечения для устройства (драйвер), которую необходимо одобрить.
- После установки дополнений потребуется перезагрузка компьютера, которую можно выполнить сразу (оставив отмеченным пункт «Reboot now«), или выполнив её позже самостоятельно (для этого нужно отметить пункт «I want to manually reboot later«).
- После перезагрузки произойдет множество полезных изменений — появится поддержка двухстороннего буфера обмена (о том, как его включить можно прочитать здесь), функция drag-n-drop между основной операционной системой и операционной системой в виртуальной машине, автоматический выбор разрешения экрана на основе размера окна VirtualBox и т. д.
Linux
В операционных системах семейства Linux, графический установщик гостевых дополнений отсутствует, вся установка происходит через терминал. Современные дистрибутивы прекрасно сами распознают файл автозапуска на образе с гостевыми дополнениями, и предлагают его запустить автоматически.
Можно так же запустить файл установки гостевых дополнений вручную. Для этого, нужно открыть терминал, и перейти в каталог, куда смонтирован виртуальный образ с файлами установки дополнений. Там же, нужно выполнить команду запуска файла установки:
sudo ./VBoxLinuxAdditions.runЕсли в результате выполнения данной команды, появляется ошибка «Permission denied» (или «Отказано в доступе»), попробуйте выполнить следующую команду:
sudo sh VBoxLinuxAdditions.runПосле выполнения данной команды, начнется установка гостевых дополнений Linux, по завершению которой, понадобится перезагрузка системы.

This article discusses modifying your machine’s registry. Altering your machine’s registry can lead to problems, and you do so at your own risk.
If you continually get an error message such as:
“ERROR: File not found!”
and/or
“ERROR: Could not install files for Windows 2000 / XP / Vista! Installation aborted.”
while trying to install guest additions in a Sun VirtualBox Windows XP Guest, you may have a registry problem. In this case, uninstalling guest additions completely and attempting a reinstall will not help. Some or all of the features afforded by guest additions may not function properly, especially seamless mode.
The issue stems from a bug in Windows XP/2000 where new hardware cannot properly be detected if the “RunOnce” key is missing in the registry beneath: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion
To fix the problem:
- Navigate to Start > Run and enter “regedit”.
- Then find:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion - With “CurrentVersion” selected, go to the Edit menu and click New > Key
- Name the key “RunOnce”, and leave everything else at defaults.
NOTE: The new “RunOnce” key should appear underneath the “CurrentVersion” key.
After you’ve added the key, reboot your virtual machine and reinstall guest additions. Everything should go as expected.

хай всем
поменял проц и мамку с асуса/i7 920 на асус/i7 2600k. обнаружил что перестали загружатся в virtualbox-е вирт машины с виндами, которые были проинсталены больше года назад. работает только та что ставил недавно, ну и новопоставленные работают. пробовал к рабочему проекту подставить образ «нерабочей» винды, не загружается. тоесть дело не в проекте а 100% в проинсталеной винде. в безопасном режиме загружаются. у кого есть какие идеи что это может быть?
