Community

Microsoft

Editor’s note 4.30.2024 – This post has been updated to add further clarity and context.

If you’re using Windows 10, you’re about to experience a significant increase in efficiency.

Microsoft releases security and quality updates for Windows every month, resulting in a substantial amount of content that can quickly consume the network bandwidth of users operating on slower networks. To reduce the demands on your network, Microsoft is now taking a page from the Windows 11 playbook and reducing the size of Windows 10 update packages.

With Windows 11, we optimized cumulative updates through more efficient packaging, including the removal of reverse differentials from the cumulative update package. (To understand how the update size for Windows 11 is reduced, please see How Microsoft reduced Windows 11 update size by 40%.)

Microsoft is now bringing the same functionality to Windows 10, version 22H2, thereby decreasing the size of the monthly latest cumulative update (LCU) package. This means reduced bandwidth usage, faster downloads, minimized network traffic, and improved performance on slow connections. This feature will be available starting with the April 23, 2024 optional non-security preview release.

Devices on Windows 10, version 22H2 will observe a reduction in update package size from 830 MB for the April 9, 2024 monthly security update to approximately 650 MB for the April 23, 2024 optional non-security preview release.

Whether you’ve been using Windows Update, Windows Update for Business, Windows Autopatch, Windows Server Update Service (WSUS), or Configuration Manager to manage updates for your Windows 10, version 22H2 devices, this transition will be seamless! Simply approve and install LCUs for your Windows 10, version 22H2 devices as you do today, and you will witness the size improvement[i].

[1] Note: If you manage Windows 10, version 22H2 installation media and have not updated that media since July 25, 2023, you may need to apply the October 10, 2023 special standalone servicing stack update before applying the April 23, 2024 or later cumulative update to that installation media.

The Windows 10 2022 Update[1] (codenamed «22H2»[2]) is the thirteenth and final[3][4][5] major update to Windows 10. It carries the build number 10.0.19045.

Windows 10, version 22H2
Predecessor Windows 10, version 21H2
Successor Windows 11

The first preview was released to Insiders who opted in to the Release Preview Channel on July 28, 2022.[2] The update began rolling out on October 18, 2022.[1][6] Notable changes introduced after the initial public release of the November 2022 Update include:

  • Re-introduction of the search box on the taskbar
  • The availability of Copilot in Windows
  • Richer weather experience on the lock screen
  • Additional quick status (such as sports, traffic, and finance) on lock screen
  • New Windows Spotlight desktop theme
  • New account manager experience on the Start menu

The update will reach end of service on October 14, 2025.[7]

Windows 10, version 22H2 is the only Windows 10 update to be eligible for the paid Extended Security Updates (ESU) program, which offers continued security updates until October 13, 2026 for consumers, or at most October 10, 2028 for businesses and schools.[8]

Microsoft officially announced the Windows 10 2022 Update, which follows the same naming convention as Windows 11 2022 Update released a month ago. However, it can also be referred to as “Windows 10 22H2.”

Installing this update will bring your operating system to Build 19045.2130.

For users on Windows 10 version 20H2 or above, you can upgrade to this version faster from the Windows Update Settings page than those with older versions. Alternatively, you can also use the downloadable ISO files below to perform a clean install.

In addition, users running the Home and Pro editions will receive 18 months of servicing, and Enterprise and Education editions will have 30 months of service.

This update isn’t as impressive as the recent Windows 11 feature update, as it does not include any drastic features. In fact, Microsoft didn’t even bother to mention the new changes in their announcement.

Windows 10 22H2

Windows 10 Version 22H2 is an updated version of Windows 10, following Windows 10 Version 21H2. It was released in October 2021, with several new features and improvements aimed at improving productivity, security, and accessibility. There are also enhancements to the Windows Shell, File Explorer, and even the Start Menu. Furthermore, this version is expected to be more stable and reliable than the previous versions, with Microsoft aiming to focus on delivering quality updates rather than just quantity.

What’s new in this version?

Although version 22H2 is a major feature upgrade for Windows 10, it does not include any new features. Instead, Microsoft has focused on releasing quality improvements and security updates that were long due.
