Hi everyone:

I recently reinstalled Oblivion in my PC (Windows 10). The strange thing is, it doesn’t launch the game.

Clicking on »PLAY» in Steam nothing happens not even the launcher comes up. This is a clean installetion, (No mods, only Vanilla).

Deleting the INI in the my games folder doesn’t help as the game don’t start.

Clicking in the Oblivion Folder does the same result. Oblivion.EXE and Oblivion Launcher does nothing, it loads but nothing comes up.

Changing the compatibility does nothing.

What you guys think ?

Note:

I have been playing Oblivion for years with my system, i notice an update from Windows 10 a few days ago, i suspect this is the main problem because Oblivion was playing nice before that:

System: Windows 10 Pro

Game Version: Oblivion Game of the Year Edition

Processor: I7 (I think is 8 cores)

Graphics Card: AMD Radeon R9 3GB

I tried Multiple installations but the EXE and the Launcher Simply don’t work not even launching the game in Steam. I suspect the upgrade has something to do with this, as Oblivion, is my only game with this problem.

Ok, that is helpful info about the recent upgrade.

Make sure you have tried deleting the ini and that it is the correct ini.

Follow the instructions in this thread: https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/5736857-just-bought-oblivion-error-on-startup/&do=findComment&comment=51081842

If none of those troubleshooting steps work, then you should try rolling back the system to before the update and see if you can run the game.

Windows 10 is pretty new compared to Oblivion, so it may be an issue with newer versions of DirectX not supporting the outdated version that Oblivion uses.

If rolling back your system works, you can stop there if you want and either turn off automatic windows updates or figure out which exact update is the problem and ignore it in Windows Update manager.

If it doesn’t work, or if you want to try to fix the issue properly so you can update your system, then you probably need to install the older version of DIrectX that Oblivion needs.

I think the game kinda works, because i can make the EXE work, tinkering with the compatibilities in the properties options, but its really really dificult, its just not normal.

But the main problem is the launcher, it simply dont work, wich means i can’t change the options like: Resolution, Window Mode, Textures ,etc.

I deleted the INI in my games folder multiple times, but since the launcher doesnt work, no new INI is generated. Only when the EXE works, witch is very uncommon.

If only i could make the launcher work, that will be awesome.

Do you know where can i find the version of DIrectX the is the correct one for Oblivion ?

And thank you very much for your support.

If the compatibility mode is going to work, you should set it to Windows 7 or Windows 8 mode. ALSO enable Run As Administrator.

Do that for BOTH the launcher and the game EXE.

This is not a fix but a workaround so maybe you can play at least…

You don’t actually need the launcher. You can configure your settings in the ini itself, or use another tool like OBMM which has it’s own settings menu to replace the launcher.

Even if you can play though, I wouldn’t be surprised if you have other issues.

Oblivion was made for DirectX9

You can try downloading and installing that, if it will even run on Win10, I dunno.

Ok, so, i installed Oblivion Today. Brand new install, no mods nothing.

The EXE. works with or without the compatibility wich means the game is working and i can play the game.

The Launcher doesn’t work no matter witch compatibillity thing is marked, it simply don’t work.

But there is one thing, no mods are loaded if the EXE loads the game, i installed the Script Extender and a mod called »Press A to take All» just for test purposes and nothing, only the oficcial DLCs are loaded in the game.

I think the launcher is needed for the game load the mods, or don’t, i don’t know exactly. If the game is working its a big victory, only the launcher problem remains and the mod load.

We just need a way to make the game load the mods now. I’m using Oblivion Mod Manager.

If you have somewhere the launcher of Nehrim, you can adjust with that one the ini file for Oblivion, much better options than the Oblivion launcher.

If you don’t, install Nehrim, back-up the launcher, and uninstall it, put the launcher back wher the exe is and adjust from there.

IT WORKS 100% SURE!!!

I don’t have Nehrim installed, my game is working but not in the launcher but using the EXE.

My only problem now is that i can’t make the OBSE work. Launching the game in the EXE, OBSE is not loaded.

If there is a way to make the OBSE work with the EXE my problems are gone.

Do you play Oblivion on windows 10 ?

As far as I know, for OBSE to work with the Steam version of the game, you need to launch the game from Steam, but when you do that, it actually launches the Oblivion Launcher, where one would need to click the button to launch the game. But since your launcher fails to open… hmm. Interesting. :P

Where do you have the game installed? If you open a task manager, and select the ‘details’ tab (the one with all the processes), does the launcher appear as a process there at all? As in, when you try to launch Oblivion from Steam, does Oblivion Launcher appear as a process in task manager? In the ‘details’ tab, that is, because it actually shows everything. If the launcher appears as a process, but closes almost immediately, then that would be a good starting point for further speculation. :)

Hey Contra:

For Oblivion, the game is in the C:Drive, is has been there since the beggining.

I notice that when i click play in Steam it loads something (Witch i presume to be the Oblivion Launcher) But closes immediately without warning, nothing. After that Steam does the synchronization thing, and thats it.

I tried installing Oblivion on the D: Drive where my recent games are, but the same issue happens.

I’m gonna reinstall Oblivion, witch drive do you think is best C or D ?

After installing i will check the task manager to see if the Launcher appears there. Has anyone on Windows 10 have the same or similar problem ?

Is The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered crashing or not launching when you try to play it? If yes, you’ve come to the right place. In this MiniTool guide, I will explain in detail how to fix game crashes, black screens, and loading issues.

The release of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered has sparked a lot of discussion, especially about technical issues like crashing, not launching, black screens, and loading problems. Some players reported that Oblivion Remastered crashes on startup or when opening the inventory, shows a black screen when the Oblivion Launcher appears or gets stuck on the initial screen with a faded map background.

In this post, I will show you how to fix these problems one by one.

Fix 1. Delete the sl.pcl.dll File

According to user experience, the NVIDIA DLSS’s sl.pcl.dll file may cause compatibility problems with the game, thus leading to the Oblivion Remastered not launching issue. So, you need to go to the following location and delete or rename the file sl.pcl.dll:

Steam\steamapps\common\Oblivion Remastered\Engine\Plugins\Marketplace\nvidia\DLSS\Steamline\Binaries\ThirdParty\Win64

Deleting the sl.pcl.dll file fixed the Oblivion Remastered crashing issue.Click to Tweet

Fix 2. Update the Graphics Card Driver

Outdated graphics drivers can also lead to crashes in Oblivion Remastered. In addition, AMD has just released a new driver update 25.4.1 that improves compatibility with the game. So, you need to download the latest driver from your GPU manufacturer’s website and install it.

Fix 3. Lower the Performance Core Ratio (for Intel CPUs)

Some players reported that Oblivion Remastered may freeze or crash during shader compilation due to CPU overclocking, and lowering the performance core ratio may fix the problem. If you are using an Intel CPU, you can give it a try.

Step 1. Download Intel Extreme Tuning Utility and install it on your computer.

Step 2. Launch the software and lower the performance core ratio to 53x or another proper value.

Step 3. Click Apply to save this change.

Fix 4. Verify the Integrity of the Game Files

If some of the game files are corrupted or missing, the game may crash on startup or when opening the inventory. So, it is necessary to verify the integrity of the game files.

On Steam, go to the Library section. Right-click Oblivion Remastered and choose Properties.

In the new window, go to the Installed Files tab, and then click Verify integrity of game files.

Fix 5. Disable All Graphics Settings in AMD Adrenalin

The built-in graphics enhancement function of AMD Adrenalin and the Overlay function of Steam, AMD, and Discord may cause the game to crash or the game screen to not display normally. If you are using AMD GPU, you can try disabling all graphics settings in AMD Adrenalin, disabling all overlays, and finally launching the game through AMD Adrenalin.

Disabling Bloom and HDR has been confirmed by many users as an effective way to resolve the black screen issue in Oblivion Remastered. When you are in the Oblivion Launcher, go to Options and make sure Bloom and HDR are disabled.

In addition, when a black screen appears, you can use the Windows + Shift + Ctrl + B key combination to reset the GPU driver.

Method 1. Turn off Steam Big Picture Mode

The big picture mode of Steam may cause interface compatibility issues. So, you can try turning off this mode and check if it works.

Step 1. In Steam, click the Steam icon in the top left corner and choose Settings.

Step 2. Go to the Interface tab and turn off Start Steam in Big Picture Mode.

disable the Steam big picture mode in Steam settings

Method 2. Run the Game as an Administrator

Running the executable files of the game is also an effective way to solve the game loading issue.

Go to the game installation folder. It is C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Oblivion Remastered by default. Next, right-click OblivionRemastered.exe and choose Properties. In the new window, go to the Compatibility tab, tick Run this program as an administrator, and hit Apply > OK.

Go to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Oblivion Remastered\OblivionRemastered\Binaries\Win64. Then, run OblivionRemastered-Win64-Snipping.exe as an administrator.

Bottom Line

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered crashing, black screen, or loading issues can be resolved by using the methods listed above. You can try the corresponding solutions according to your actual situation.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered

Oblivion Remastered

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion was a major hit when it was released and it set the ground up for Skyrim which is a sequel that became the most popular game of its era. Oblivion feels like its older brother and there are people who actually prefer it over Skyrim.

Some people experience extreme problems when trying to launch the game as it crashes immediately on startup and prevents users from playing it properly at all. The problem usually occurs immediately after launching the game and there is usually no error code or a window which could explain what actually happened.

What Causes Oblivion Crashes on Startup?

For the most part, the problem is caused by the in-game music which is, again, caused by missing codec packs on users’ computers. The game can also start crashing after you have changed too many in-game settings or the .ini files.

Users who have multiple monitors in their gaming setup should also consider disabling some of them or tweaking certain settings in the game’s properties as the game is somewhat too old for multi-monitor setups.

Solution 1: Delete the Oblivion Folder in MyGames

Deleting this folder should overwrite and reset any improper configurations you might have made or the ones which were buggy since the game installed and you should be able to run it properly simply after deleting the Oblivion folder located in Documents >> My Games.

Note that there is a Saves folder inside the Oblivion folder and you should definitely leave it out when deleting everything inside the Oblivion folder if you want to continue where you left off before the error started to happen.

  1. Navigate to the required location in the File Explorer simply by opening a folder and clicking This PC or My Computer from the left navigation pane or by searching for this entry in the Start menu.

  1. Anyway, in This PC or My Computer, double-click to open your Local Disk and navigate to Users >> Your Account’s Name >> Documents >> My Games >> Oblivion.
  2. Enter the Oblivion folder and make sure you select everything besides the Saves folder, right-click, and choose the Delete option from the context menu.
  3. Restart the game afterward by relaunching Steam and double-clicking the game from the Steam Library tab to see if Oblivion still crashes on startup.

Solution 2: Install a Codec Pack

Having a quality codec pack installed on your computer is a thing plenty of people skip when they download everything necessary for their computer. However, this is a mistake and having Oblivion crash on startup each time you launch it is one of the problems which can be caused by not having a codec pack installed on your computer. Follow the steps below in order to install it now!

  1. Visit this link in order to see a list of available K-Lite Codec packs you can download on your computer. You can simply choose the Basic pack and download it by clicking the Download button next to its entry.

  1. Click on Mirror 1 or Mirror 2 from the next window and wait for the executable to download. Locate it in the Downloads folder and double-click to open it. Follow the instructions which will appear on-screen in order to follow through the installation process on your computer.
  2. Restart your computer in order to apply the changes and try running Oblivion now to see if it crashes on startup.

Note: An alternative for you if you are not able or not willing to download any codec packs on your computer is to disable music from the game using the Oblivion.ini configuration file which can be accessed easily. Follow the steps below in order to edit this file properly and hopefully put an end to the constant crashes.

  1. Navigate to the required location in the File Explorer simply by opening a folder and clicking This PC or My Computer from the left navigation pane or by searching for this entry in the Start menu.
  2. Anyway, in This PC or My Computer, double-click to open your Local Disk and navigate to Users >> Your Account’s Name >> Documents >> My Games >> Oblivion.
  3. Enter the Oblivion folder and locate a file called Oblivion.ini. Right-click the file and choose Open. If the Choose a program window opens, select Notepad and click OK.

  1. Use the Ctrl + F key combination or click Edit at the top menu and select the Find option from the dropdown menu in order to open the Search box.
  2. Type MusicEnabled in the box and change the value next to it from 1 to 0. Do the Same for “bDSoundHWAcceleration=1” and “bSoundEnabled=1”. After changing their values, save your changes by clicking on “File>Save”.

  1. Try running the game again in order to check if Oblivion crashes on startup after performing these steps.
  2. You can start turning each of their values back one by one because only one of these settings might be causing the crash.

Solution 3: Fixes for Users with Multiple Monitors

If you have two or more monitors on your setup, you may run into problems with games crashing more often than other users and you might want to consider disabling the secondary monitors and only use the primary PC screen for displaying the game. This can be done easily by using the Windows Key + P key combination and choosing the PC screen only option at the top.

If this doesn’t work, you can disable these monitors completely but these steps differ depending on which graphics card you have installed: Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD.

  • NVIDIA Users: Right-click Desktop >> NVIDIA Control Panel >> Display tab >> Set up multiple displays >> Disable all monitors except your PC screen.
  • AMD/ATI Users: Open AMD Catalyst Control Center >> Display management >> Disable all monitors except your PC screen.

However, users have reported that there are methods where you can use multiple displays and fix the constant crashes by following the steps below for the Oblivion.exe executable.

  1. If you have purchased the game on Steam, open up your Steam PC client by double-clicking its shortcut on the Desktop or by searching for it in the Start menu simply by typing “Steam” after pressing the Start menu or the Search (Cortana) button.
  1. After the Steam client opens, click to open the Library tab in the Steam window at the menu located at the top of the window, and locate the Oblivion entry in the list.
  2. Right-click the game’s icon in the library and choose the Properties option from the context menu which will open and make sure you navigate to the Local Files tab in the Properties window straight away and click the Browse Local Files button.

  1. You can also search for the game’s main executable by clicking the Start menu button or the search button next to it and typing Oblivion. Anyway, right-click on the executable and choose the Open file location option from the context menu which will appear.
  2. Locate the Oblivion.exe file, right-click on it and choose the Properties option from the dropdown menu. Navigate to the Compatibility tab and uncheck the boxes net to the visual themes and desktop composition entries if you can find them.

  1. Confirm the changes and try relaunching the game to see if it still crashes on startup.

Solution 4: Uninstall Cyberlink Power DVD 5

After checking error logs that appeared on his computer, a user noticed that the Cyberlink Power DVD 5 tool caused the problem for him and made him go through all the work when in fact the problem can be solved simply by uninstalling the program.

The program is not malware nor is it spam. It’s a legit software which can be used to manage disks and ISO files but it simply causes certain issues which look like this in the error log:

Faulting module path: C:\Program Files (x86)\CyberLink\Shared Files\AudioFilter\claud.ax

Try uninstalling this tool and check to see if the crashes still occur on startup:

  1. First of all, make sure you have logged in with an admin account as you won’t be able to uninstall programs using any other account privileges.
  2. Click on the Start menu and open Control Panel by searching for it. Alternatively, you can click on the gear icon in order to open settings if you are using Windows 10.
  3. In Control Panel, select to “View as:” Category at the top right corner and click on Uninstall a Program under the Programs section.

  1. If you are using the Settings app, clicking on Apps should immediately open a list of all installed programs on your PC.
  2. Locate the Cyberlink Power DVD 5 entry on the list and click on it once. Click on the Uninstall button above the list and confirm any dialog boxes which may appear. Follow the instructions on-screen in order to uninstall Cyberlink Power DVD 5 and restart your computer afterward.

Solution 5: Changing Executable Names

In some cases, it was seen as a weird workaround that the game worked if its executable names were switched a little. Therefore, in this step, we will be changing the executable names for Oblivion. In order to do that:

  1. Navigate to the main installation directory of the game.
  2. Right-click on the “OblivionLauncher.exe” and select “Rename”.
    Selecting Rename
  3. Change its name to anything else.
  4. Now, right-click on “Oblivion.exe” and change its name to “OblivionLauncher.exe”.
  5. Check to see if the issue persists.

Solution 6: Changing Install Location

In some cases, the error is triggered if the user installs the game in Program Files and weirdly this error is fixed for some users by installing it in “C>Bethesda Softworks>Oblivion“. Therefore, install the game in the mentioned location and before doing so go through the second solution to completely remove the Oblivion Configuration files in Documents because they aren’t uninstalled by default.

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion Remastered
