While the Nokia Lumia 530 isn’t officially supported, it’s still possible to get Windows 10 mobile running on it. At the time of writing, it has become a bit tricky to get it to work, since most official Microsoft tools are discontinued and will therefore not work. I will be linking the files which I’ve used. The credits to the people who made or shared the tools and guides I used will be at the bottom of this guide.

Note that I am not responsible for any damage made. Proceed at your own risk!

Prerequisites:
— A Nokia Lumia 530 running the Windows 8.1 Denim Update (will be referred to as «device»)
— A stable Windows 7 system or VM, with .NET Framework 4.5.x or 4.6.x (on Windows 10, the IUTool will fail to synchronize, hence this requirement)
— An internet connection that can handle a download of approximately 2GB data on the computer and about the same on the phone
— A good USB cable (a flimsy one with a loose fit could brick the device while it’s updating)
— The programs linked below

First part of the installation:
1. Make sure the device is fully charged. If it’s not fully charged the device could get (soft-)bricked.

2. Factory reset the device, so you have as much storage as possible available on the device. After the reset is done, leave it at the language selection screen, because it doesn’t do anything there.

3. Extract HCTSW_WXMSOUP_V5.3beta6.update.lzma2.7z with 7zip or whatever you prefer.

4. Download the Visual C++ libraries from here: https://www.techpowerup.com/download/visual-c-redistributable-runtime-package-all-in-one/ and run the install script.

5. The next thing you are going to do is download the updates, push them to the device and install them. This will take some time, but it depends on your internet connection for the most part. The files will be downloaded from the official Microsoft servers. Now here’s what to do: open run_en.cmd and follow the steps. These are pretty clear, so I don’t think I need to point all of them out here. It will open a webpage where you can download WDRT, you will need to install that for the tool to work.

6. Now you can move on to the second part.

Second part of the installation:
In this part of the installation, you will be updating the device from version 1511 to the latest available build, which should have a working Microsoft store.

1. The setup of the device. The version that just got installed doesn’t have a lot of options yet, including language packs. If you have a device that’s not English United States, the keyboard will bug out on setup, because it’s trying to access a language pack that doesn’t exist. Therefore, the first step, setting the language should be English (United States), so the OS itself won’t bug out. Once you’ve set the language (it will prompt to reboot, do that), you can go through the rest of the setup. Don’t log it into your Wi-Fi, don’t log it into your Microsoft account and don’t turn on automatic app updates. It’ll say it needs to set up apps, that takes some time but eventually you’ll get to the home screen. Now is when you need a few tools, which brings us to step 2.

Now is a good moment for me to point out that, if you have a non-English-US device, the keyboard for another language is still «installed». It can be removed by holding it in settings -> time and language -> keyboard and choosing “Delete”.

2. Installing Interop Tools. In order to get updates, you’ll need to modify your device a bit. This won’t be very hard, but it involves some registry modifications so you’ll have to pay close attention.

Go to settings -> update and security -> for developers and enable developer mode, so you can sideload the Interop Tools (Linked below). Copy the contents of the Interop Tools zip to the device first. Then, go to the file manager on the phone and go to the directory where you put the files. INSTALL THE DEPENDENCIES IN THE \ARM FOLDER FIRST, THEN THE INTEROP TOOLS FILE ITSELF! Check if the Interop Tools installed on the “all apps screen” and get ready to open it.

3. Modifying the registry. Open Interop Tools and tap the

“This Device” button. This will bring up a menu.
3.1. Tap the menu button on the top left corner, then select “Modify Registry”. In the “Registry Key Path”, put SYSTEM\Platform\DeviceTargetingInfo. Then, put PhoneManufacturerModelName in the “Registry Value Name” box and tap the “Read” button at the bottom. You’ll see some text appear in a box. This will need to be edited to the following value: RM-1089_1048. After you did that, tap the “Write” button.
3.2. Now put PhoneModelName in the the “Registry Value Name” box and tap “Read” again. Now change the value to Lumia 535 and tap “Write”.
3.3. Exit out of Interop Tools and go to the next step.

4. Logging in to the Wi-Fi and checking for updates.
4.1. Logging it in to the Wi-Fi. Go to settings -> network & wireless -> Wi-Fi and choose your network. Easy peasy probably.
4.2. Checking for updates. This is the part that always went wrong with me, because of storage limits (gotta love that 4GB eMMC). But if I’ve explained this well enough, you might not have to do a lot of weird stuff. Oh well, to the instruction we go. Go to settings -> update and security -> windows update and check for updates. This will take a while! Keep it on wall power because updating can only be done at 40% or more at this point. I got two updates: from 1511 to early 1607 and from that to late 1607. Maybe you can get a newer version with WDRT or OTC but I doubt that to be honest.

Hooray! Now you should have a fully functional Nokia Lumia 530 with Windows 10 mobile!

[ADDITION] Updating from build 1607 to 1709.

I said it wouldn’t be possible and it would break stuff, but I tried it and it doesn’t break anything some people say it might break. Yeah, it might impact on battery life a bit, but nothing has broken for me (yet), it has only improved.

I’ve learned that the update from 1607 to 1703 is the hardest one yet, but you should be able to get it going. This is because the preinstalled Store in 1607 can connect to the app update servers, but it can’t view the app. This is a difficult situation because many apps will become very large when they get updated. You need to figure out for yourself what gets you the space you need, but I found that uninstalling all the apps that can be uninstalled and deleting system apps through MTP (which can be done by bootloader unlocking, rooting and booting into mass storage mode with Windows Phone Internals (I recommend that you only delete OneNote, SkyDrive (as it’s being referred to in /data/program files/windowsapps) and the Xbox app).

Step 0: you might want to factory reset first

Let’s get to the updating though…

1. Modifying the registry. Open Interop Tools and tap the

“This Device” button. This will bring up a menu.
1.1. Tap the menu button on the top left corner, then select “Modify Registry”. In the “Registry Key Path”, put SYSTEM\Platform\DeviceTargetingInfo. Now do the exact same as you did before, except use these “registry value names” and put the corresponding information into the box below that. Don’t forget to tap write!
Values you should use:

PhoneHardwareVariant RM-1104
PhoneManufacturer MicrosoftMDG
PhoneManufacturerModelName RM-1104_11210
PhoneModelName Lumia 950

1.2. Exit out of Interop Tools and go to the next step.

2. Logging in to the Wi-Fi and checking for updates.
2.1. Logging it in to the Wi-Fi. Go to settings -> network & wireless -> Wi-Fi and choose your network. Easy peasy probably.
2.2. Checking for updates. Go to settings -> update and security -> Windows Update and check for updates. This will take a while! Keep it on wall power because updating can only be done at 40% or more at this point. I got 3 updates, one from 1607 to 1703, one from 1703 to 1709 and another one from old 1709 to last 1709.

Did you break it?
Edit: WPInternals refuses to put the phone in mass storage mode so uh… Yeah…

Yeah that doesn’t work. Rename the .bin to .zip, extract, mount the phone in mass storage mode and copy the files to the EFIESP folder/symlink. If you can’t do that, WDRT can probably unbreak it

  • #10

Please anounce me when you can upload the dumped partition.

  • #11

Is resulting that efiesp.bin , data.bin and mainos.bin are related, so i cant upgrade my phone to windows 10 mobile without them.

Just flash the original FFU. Literally all I did is in the guide and I never had to flash something from another device

  • #16

How do you get to the Denim update? I’m getting the error that I am running a build older than 8.10.14219.341 and need to update first.

You can download and flash it in WPInternals (will delete all data so back that up first) or WDRT (not sure if that erases userdata)

WDRT already says I’m at the latest version of Windows for my device, so that sucks. I shall try WPInternals! Thanks!

The Nokia Lumia 530 did not get the official windows 10 mobile and even barred from getting the technical preview version of the windows 10 mobile. Fortunately, there is a way to hack it and it comes from the folks at XDA. Previously, the Nokia Lumia 530 users were able to use the vcRed and Extra&Info hack to get windows 10 mobile on their smartphones but once that stopped working, the Nokia Lumia 530 users were left alone in the dark. Nevertheless, xda developers have found this trick to install Windows 10 Mobile on Nokia Lumia 530.

install Windows 10 Mobile on Nokia Lumia 530

1. Free up some space – The “100-year trick”
* You will need a large Micro SD card – at least 4GB.
* The updates downloaded alone require around 900MB of space. After it’s finished, Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.164 takes 2.46GB on my Lumia 530. We’re going to need more space.
* Hard reset your phone
* When it comes back up, disable time synchronization, and set the date to 100 years in the future (e.g. 01/01/2155).
* Open the Settings App, and try to open all the various tabs. Many of them will tell you there’s a problem, and allow you to uninstall it.
* Uninstall any other apps from the All apps screen.
* You should have around 1.4GB free space now.

2. Developer Unlock your Lumia 530
* Install the Windows Phone 8.1 SDK https://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/p/?LinkId=534599
* If you haven’t already, you’ll need to register as a developer. https://developer.microsoft.com/en-us/windows
* Search for Windows Phone Developer Registration Tool 8.1 on your computer, and follow the steps to Developer unlock your Lumia 530 (your screen must be unlocked during this procedure.
* Go to the app store, and install the Windows Insider and Preview for Developers app.
* Open up Storage Sense, and move Preview for Developers to the SD card.
* Make sure Windows Insider remains on your Phone storage; and the default App location is your Phone.

3. Interop Unlock your Lumia 530
* Grab and deploy CustomWPSystem_0500.xap and WPSystem_Folder_Unlocker_Release_ARM.xap to your phone (using the Windows Phone Application Deployment 8.1 program from the SDK -> C:\Program Files (x86)\ Microsoft SDKs\ Windows Phone\ v8.1\ Tools\ AppDeploy\ AppDeploy.exe)
* Copy CustomPFD_0003.xap to the SD Card
* Open up WPSystem_Folder_Unlocker on your phone, and tap “Unlock WPSystem Folder (sdcard)”. It should say “Success!”
* Open up CustomWPSystem on your phone.
* Tap the red bar “SD Card permissions”, then browse to your SD Card and tap Apply (the tick).
* Scroll to the bottom, and tap “Select the XAP”.
* Pick the CustomPFD_0003.xap file you copied to the SD card.
* Tap Apply Xap. Browse to Preview for Developers in the All Apps list. The icon should have changed.

4. Change your Device Identifiers

* Here’s the real reason this works: We’re going to pretend our humble Lumia 530 is actually a Lumia 535.
* Open the Preview for Developers app
* Browse to HKLM/SYSTEM/Platform/DeviceTargetingInfo and change the following keys:
PhoneManufacturer: MicrosoftMDG
PhoneManufacturerModelName: RM-1089_1048
PhoneModelName: Lumia 535
PhoneMobileOperatorName: 000-IT
5. Force updates to download to the SD Card – the “1GB File trick”

Windows update have always preferred to download updates to the local phone storage as it is faster than the SD card but since there is inadequate space on the Nokia Lumia 530, it will download the update files to the SD card. For that, on your PC, open up a Command Prompt as Administrator. Create a 1GB file (copy and paste following line in Command Prompt):
fsutil file createnew C:\1gb.tmp 1000000000

Copy the file to your Phone storage. Join the Insiders Program if you haven’t already, and select Slow Ring or Release Preview. Check for phone updates. Soon after the updates begin downloading (say 5% to be sure), you must delete the 1GB temp file. While this file forced Windows Update to download to the SD card, we still need all that space we cleared earlier for the updates to actually install. Now allow your phone to reboot when prompted.

Windows 10 Mobile upgrade

The Minimum hardware requirements for Windows 10 Mobile may hold the key to the question that whether devices like Lumia 530 with 4 GB internal storage would be able to upgrade  to Windows 10 Mobile or not.

The requirement documentation clearly mentions that Windows 10 Mobile running devices with 4 GB internal storage are possible and “must include sufficient free space in the system and user partitions for future updates of OEM-owned components”. It also puts the condition that “to ensure successful upgrade, it is recommended that a device with 4 GB of nonremovable flash storage includes an SD card slot.”

So, it is quite clear that Lumia 530 with 4 GB internals storage and SD card slot meets the criteria quite well.

2.3.1 Flash type and layout

Devices that run Windows 10 Mobile must include a minimum of 4 GB of nonremovable flash storage, and they must implement a flash storage system using an e•MMC or UFS and optional SD card. See section 6.7.3 for additional requirements for the micro SD card slot.

2.3.2 Free up space for update

Devices that run Windows 10 Mobile must include sufficient free space in the system and user partitions for future updates of OEM-owned components. For more information, see the Windows 10 Partner Documentation when it is available.

2.3.3 User flash

Devices that run Windows 10 Mobile must include a user partition of size 1 GB or more of internal nonremovable e•MMC or UFS storage.

2.3.4 SD card

If an SD card is included in a device that runs Windows 10 Mobile, the SD card must support the SD Association’s SD 2.0 or SD 3.0 specifications (http://www.sdcard.org/). The SD 3.0 specification is backward compatible with SD 2.0.

Note: To ensure successful upgrade, it is recommended that a device with 4 GB of nonremovable flash storage includes an SD card slot.

I’ve got a cheap Lumia 530 I use as my dev phone. Having recently upgraded my daily driver Lumia 925 to Windows 10, it was time to upgrade my dev phone too.

The Lumia 530 isn’t officially supported anymore — and probably never will be. Regardless, it’s still possible to run W10M 10586.164 on your Lumia 530!

Standard disclaimer applies here. This is totally unsupported by Microsoft, and I bear no responsibility for bricked phones, lost data, or your phone spontaneously combusting.

Free up some space – The «100-year trick»

You will need a large MicroSD card – at least 4GB.
The updates downloaded alone require around 900MB of space. After it’s finished, Windows 10 Mobile build 10586.164 takes 2.46GB on my Lumia 530. We’re gonna need more space.

  • Hard reset your phone
  • When it comes back up, disable time synchronisation, and set the date to 100 years in the future (e.g. 01/01/2155).
  • Open the Settings App, and try to open all the various tabs. Many of them will tell you there’s a problem, and allow you to uninstall it.
  • Uninstall any other apps from the All apps screen.

You should have around 1.4GB free space now.

Developer Unlock your Lumia 530

  • Install the Windows Phone 8.1 SDK
  • If you haven’t already, you’ll need to register as a developer.
  • Fire up Windows Phone Developer Registration Tool 8.1, and follow the steps to unlock your Lumia 530.
  • Go to the app store, and install the Windows Insider and Preview for Developers app.
  • Open up Storage Sense, and move Preview for Developers to the SD card.
  • Make sure Windows Insider remains on your Phone storage; and the default App location is your Phone.

Interop Unlock your Lumia 530

  • Grab and deploy CustomWPSystem_0500.xap and WPSystem_Folder_Unlocker_Release_ARM.xap to your phone (using the Windows Phone Application Deployment 8.1 program from the SDK)
  • Copy CustomPFD_0003.xap to the SD Card
  • Open up WPSystem_Folder_Unlocker on your phone, and tap «Unlock WPSystem Folder (sdcard)». It should say «Success!»
  • Open up CustomWPSystem on your phone
  • Tap the red bar «SD Card permissions», then browse to your SD Card and tap Apply (the tick)
  • Scroll to the bottom, and tap «Select the XAP».
  • Pick the CustomPFD_0003.xap file you copied to the SD card.
  • Tap Apply Xap.
  • Browse to Preview for Developers in the All Apps list. The icon should have changed.

Change your Device Identifiers

Here’s the real reason this works: We’re going to pretend our humble Lumia 530 is actually a Lumia 535.

  • Open the Preview for Developers app
  • Browse to HKLM/SYSTEM/Platform/DeviceTargetingInfo
  • Change the following keys:
  • PhoneManufacturerModelName: RM-1089_1048
  • PhoneModelName: Lumia 535
  • PhoneMobileOperatorName: 000-IT

Force updates to download to the SD Card – the «1GB File trick»

Windows Update always prefers to download updates to the local phone storage. It’s typically faster than the SD card, and a whole lot safer. But if there’s insufficient space, it can download the update files to the SD card.

  • On your PC, open up a Command Prompt as Administrator
  • Create a 1GB file: fsutil file createnew C:\1gb.tmp 1000000000
  • Copy the file to your Phone storage.
  • Join the Insiders Program if you haven’t already, and select Fast Ring.
  • Check for phone updates.
  • Soon after the updates begin downloading (say 5% to be sure), you must delete the 1GB temp file. While this file forced Windows Update to download to the SD card, we still need all that space we cleared earlier for the updates to actually install!
  • Allow your phone to reboot when prompted.
  • If install progress hangs for >1 hour at the «Migrating your data» screen, it’s safe to reboot (mine hung at Step 20).

Windows 10 Mobile 10586.107 took 3 hours 40 minutes to install on my Lumia 530 (before the Migrating your data screen even kicked off). Install speed is probably heavily affected on the speed (i.e. cost) of your SD card.

Lumia 530 running Windows 10 Mobile 10586.164

Upgrade your Lumia 530 to 10586.164

Once you’ve successfully got 10586.107 installed on your Lumia 530, we can upgrade to 10586.164.

  • Open up the Windows Insider app, and enrol in the Slow Ring. It’ll prompt you to reboot.
  • The old 1GB file trick again. Copy that 1GB file back to your phone storage.
  • In the Settings App, search for updates. They should again begin downloading to your SD card.
  • As before, delete the 1GB file after the updates begin downloading.

Windows 10 Mobile.

Interop Unlock.
DHT Upgrade Advisor.
DHT Upgrade Advisor.
First get a backup of your device targeting info.
Allow Update.
Restore Backup.
