Network neighborhood windows 7

Applies ToWindows XP Windows Vista Windows 7 Windows 8.1

An unsupported version of Windows doesn’t receive software updates from Microsoft. These updates include security updates that protect your PC from harmful viruses, spyware, and other malicious software, which can steal your personal information. Windows Update also installs the latest software updates to improve the reliability of Windows, which includes new drivers for your hardware.

If you have devices running an unsupported version of Windows, we recommend upgrading them to a more current, in-service, and supported Windows release. If your devices don’t meet the technical requirements to run a more current release of Windows, we recommend that you replace the device with one that supports Windows 11. For more information, see Windows 11 system requirements.

To check the end-of-support dates for all versions of Windows, see the product lifecycle information for Windows.

If your version of Windows is still supported, you should always install the latest updates for Windows. To download and install these updates, use Windows Update in the Settings app.

Devices running an unsupported version of Windows will still function, but Microsoft doesn’t provide the following:

  • Technical support of any issue

  • Software updates

  • Security updates or fixes

While you could continue to use your PC, without continued software and security updates your PC is at greater risk for viruses and malware. We recommend upgrading to a version of Windows that’s still supported. A new device that can run Windows 11 makes for an easy transition and a great experience.

Yes. If you continue to use an unsupported version of Windows, your PC will still work, but it’s more vulnerable to security risks and viruses. Your PC will continue to start and run, but you won’t receive software updates, including security updates, from Microsoft.

For more information about the support policy, see the Microsoft support lifecycle policy FAQ.

There are a few options for using a supported version of Windows:

  • Recommended: New PC with Windows 11 — Windows 11 is the most current version of Windows. If you have an older PC, we recommend you move to Windows 11 by buying a new PC. Hardware and software have improved a lot, and today’s computers are faster, more powerful, and more secure. View Windows 11 PCs

  • Installing Windows 11 on your current PC — You can also see if your current PC meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 11. PCs that are running an unsupported version of Windows are unlikely to meet these requirements, but if yours does, you can purchase and download a full version of Windows 11 Home or Windows 11 Pro or buy from a retailer. If you do choose this path, you’ll need to reinstall your apps. In some cases, a newer version of the app may be required. You also need to transition files, data, and settings. The installation overwrites the contents of your existing hard drive. It may be easier for you to first upgrade to Windows 10 and then upgrade to Windows 11.

  • Installing Windows 10 on your current PC — Windows 10 is still available and will be supported until October 14, 2025. You can check if your current PC meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 10. If it does, you can check with retailers to see if they still offer Windows 10 for sale.

There are two ways you can get Windows 11:

  • Recommended: New PC with Windows 11 — Windows 11 is the most current version of Windows. If you have an older PC, we recommend you move to Windows 11 by buying a new PC. Hardware and software have improved a lot, and today’s computers are faster, more powerful, and more secure. View Windows 11 PCs

  • Installing Windows 11 on your current PC — You can also see if your current PC meets the minimum system requirements for Windows 11. There currently aren’t free upgrade paths from unsupported versions of Windows to either Windows 10 or Windows 11. You can purchase Windows 11 from Microsoft or contact a retailer to learn about more options. You can upgrade from Windows 10 to Windows 11 for free.

It’s easy to bring your files and photos to a new PC using OneDrive, a cloud storage service. You can back up and protect your files online in the cloud and then sync onto a new PC. Syncing the files between your new PC and the cloud allows you to store the file locally for offline use when you don’t have internet access. They’re also stored on the OneDrive service in the cloud where you can restore them if something happens. OneDrive can automatically keep the two versions in sync as changes are made.

If OneDrive isn’t the best fit for you, you can also use an external hard drive or USB key to copy over files.

The «Network Neighborhood» shortcut on the desktop in the Windows operating system allows you to organize quick access to resources located on the local network. As with all icons of system components, its display can be turned on and off. Therefore, if you did not need it before, but now you suddenly needed it, then you can return the shortcut to its original place by enabling the appropriate setting in the OS settings.

How to find Network Neighborhood

How to find Network Neighborhood

Instructions

Step 1

Use Control Panel if you have Seven or Vista version of Windows operating system. In these systems, it is launched by selecting the appropriate item in the main menu, opened by clicking on the «Start» button.

Step 2

In Windows 7, starting the control panel, it will be enough to enter the word «personalization» in the search field and the system itself will find the necessary component, and you will only have to click the link shown to you with the same name. In Windows Vista, you will have to make a short journey to the desired page yourself: select the «Appearance and personalization» section, and then click the «Personalization» link.

Step 3

Select the task named «Change Desktop Icons» — this link is located on the left side of the personalization settings window. This will take you to the window of a system component with the title «Desktop Elements», which contains settings for displaying some of the shortcuts of system components.

Step 4

If you are using an earlier version of the Windows XP operating system, you can do without the Control Panel. In this OS, you can right-click on a free space on the desktop and select the «Properties» line from the pop-up context menu. In the window that opens, you need to click the «Desktop Settings» button located on the «Desktop» tab. In this way, you will be taken to the «Desktop Elements» window similar to other OS versions.

Step 5

In all of the listed versions of Windows, in the «Desktop Icons» section on the «General» tab of this window, check the checkbox associated with the «Network» (or «Network Neighborhood») shortcut. After that, click the «OK» button, committing the change and close all other windows (Control Panel in Windows 7 and Vista or Display Properties in Windows XP).

Is there a way in W7 to have all network computers shown the same way as they appear in XP network neighbouring, that is to say to have a tree, each node of which is a domain or a workgroup and lists the computers it contains ?

Domain Name Resolution is handled by DNS so, Check the XP machine(s) my guess would be that they are either pointing to a different DNS server, or a second DNS server or that the name resolution is being augmented by a WINS server that your Win7 machines aren’t looking at, or perhaps even have a hosts file with the machines in the child domain.
If there is nothing unique or unusual about the machines in the child domain and the Win7 machines are pointing at the DNS server responsible for hosting the A records for that domain, then I’m not sure why you’re not seeing them.
Perhaps make sure that NetBIOS over TCP/IP is enabled as well as starting the TCP NetBIOS helper service and see if that makes any difference.

EDIT: Can…

Unfortunately, the short answer is no, not «the same way».
Windows 7 has gone all Windows Explorer all the time and instead of Network Neighborhood and or My Network Places, you have Network, located bottom left of Windows Explorer. It takes some brief getting use to, but after a while I think you will find it at least as useful as the old way. Like if you change the view to details, you’ll be able to see information regarding workgroup membership, location, etc, you can add columns to view additional information as you see fit like discovery method MAC address, IP address, etc.
If all the computers are on the same subnet they should show up here, I have 6 computers Win7 (Ultimate and Pro) and XP pro, with three different work groups, they are all listed and all accessable through this interface.

Thank you for this clear and helpful answer.

Anyway, I am still facing some drawbacks.

My W7 machine belongs to a 2003 domain. An XP machine belongs to the same domain. In this domain there is an 2003 sub-domain.

From the XP machine, I can see every machine.
From the W7 machine, the sub-domain machines don’t appear and the domain machines don’t show their MAC and IP address.

What is wrong ?

EDIT: Can you ping the machines in the child domain by ipaddress and hostname from the Windows 7 machines.

Both the XP and W7 machines use the same DHCP server, which is the root domain DC. So, apart from their IP address, their NIC have the same configuration and points to the same DNS and WINS. So, I expect the network be seen the same way from either machine. There are two DNS servers, the root domain DC and the child domain DC. The child redirects to the root and the root delegates to the child.
From the W7 machine I can ping the child domain DC by IP address, by Fully Qualified name, but not by the machine name.
From the XP machine I can ping the child domain DC by IP address, by Fully Qualified name, and by the machine name.
Why W7 does show root domain machines IP and MAC addresses ?

Through the network neighbors can set up a row of connections or networks, can also see the basic network information and settings, some users in contact with the Win7 flagship system can not find a network of neighbors, in fact, in the Win7 to find a network of neighbors is not difficult, then Win7 online neighbors exactly where? Here are three kinds of Win7 64-bit online neighbors open tips.

Tip One:

Microsoft renamed «Network Places» to «networks» in the Win7 system, so many users do not know the Network Neighborhood, in addition to open on the desktop, you can open the desktop «computer» and then in the left-hand menu to find the bottom of the «network» click, the network is familiar with the online neighborhood.

Tip Two:

Use the search function in the Start menu to quickly search for «My Network Places», open the «Start» menu in Win7, and enter the program «Network» icon in the search box as shown in the «Network» (as shown in the following image);

Technique Three:

Open the Start menu and find the Control Panel option, and then click «Network and Internet»-«network and Sharing Center»-«network» in the Control Panel window to easily open your online neighborhood.

Microsoft has renamed the W7 System Network Neighborhood The name of the «net», so many users cannot find the network place in the Win7 operating system, we can find it through the computer, the Start menu search or the control Panel, and hope that the tutorial skills will help us find our online neighbors.
