It is not unusual for games to receive bigger content updates in the form of paid DLCs. It is not a rule though, as we were reminded by recent Valhalla DLC to God of War Ragnarok. It is a completely free extension for the owners of the original game but packed with amazing content. A bit smaller in its scale, Geometry Dash (a neat platformer title from 2014) also received a huge update marked 2.2. In the case of GD however, it caused issues for a great number of players for whom the game started to crash on launch. If you are one of them, we have a fix for you.
GD crashing on launch fix
Update 2.2 for Geometry Dash is a considerable in its size extension for almost 10-year-old title. It adds a lot of new features like, for example, new player icons, main level, game type and more. It seems though that it also broke the game for many, as a lot of players on Steam’s Community Hub started informing about a crash that prevents them from enjoying GD.
The problem here lies most probably in modifications installed for the title. It is a reoccurring theme for many game crashes lately. We have seen that in Cyberpunk 2077, Satisfactory, and Ready or Not. What to do then?
The solution is quite simple – uninstall all the mods that you have applied for the game. The most popular one is called Mega Hack that is a modding tool for GD. If you are unsure how to do it, follow the steps below:
- Navigate to the folder where the game is installed (easiest way is to right-click on it in your Steam Library, select “Manage” option, and then “Browse local files”),
- Delete everything except for Resources directory and the game’s executable (GeometryDash.exe).
- Then again, back in Steam Library, right-click GD, select “Properties…”, in the new window select “Installed Files” tab and then choose “Verify integrity of game files”.
- After the necessary files are downloaded, you should be able to play the title again.
If that won’t cut it, your best chance is to completely uninstall Geometry Dash and delete all the remaining files and folders. With that done, install it again and the game should be fixed.
As previously mentioned, mods can be a big problem especially when major updates for a game happen. It is important to keep your modifications up to date, so they won’t cause issues. Bear in mind that mod developers usually patch their creations to be in line with the game version, though it always comes with delay.

Geometry Dash is an exciting and addictive game that brings together geometry and music in a unique way. However, like any other computer program, it isn’t immune to occasional glitches and errors. If you’ve experienced issues such as crashes, shutdowns, black screens, or being unable to load or open the game on your PC, don’t worry! In this article, we will discuss some simple solutions that can help you get back to playing your favorite game smoothly. So, let’s dive in and explore the possible fixes together!
Solution 1: Restart the PC
When you experience not opening on Windows 11/10/7 or any bug in Geometry Dash, it’s recommended to start by restarting the computer before attempting any other fixes.
This is because restarting the computer can resolve any temporary errors caused by outdated cookies and cache or conflicts with other software on your system by simply restarting Windows 11.
Solution 2: Run the Program as an Administrator (Permanently) PC
When running Geometry Dash on PC, there may be times when you need to give the program administrative privileges in order to access certain features or settings and in our case to get rid of black screen on startup.
One way of doing it is by simply right-clicking on the program and selecting “Run as administrator”, but it may not always be enough, as you may need to grant these privileges permanently in order to avoid constantly having to repeat the process.
Here’s how to run a program as an administrator permanently on Windows 11/10/7:
- Go to the folder/Application
- Right-click on it
- A menu will open
- Select Properties
- A new window will open
- Navigate to the “Compatibility Tab“
- Under the Settings heading
- Find “Run this Program as an administrator“
- Check the box for this option
- Click “Apply“
Now your program successfully Runs as an Administrator on Windows 11/10 (Permanently) and you can easily open the program without repeating the steps.
Solution 3: Update Geometry Dash
For critical errors like not opening, publishers release updates for an optimized and smooth gaming experience. It’s wise to check for any update released before troubleshooting other possible issues.
Playing with outdated versions can also lead to technical glitches, compatibility issues, or even missing out on new content. Here’s how to keep any game updated using its dedicated launcher:
Open the Game Launcher and from its settings locate “Update” Options. Either enable automatic updates or do a manual update if there are any. Restart the Launcher and check if you are still facing black screen on startup.
Solution 4: Close Intensive/Unwanted Programs Or Settings
Your game/PC can be set to maximum performance, try running the game on lower settings to consume fewer resources. This can include:
- A lower resolution(From 4k to 1080p or 1080p to 720p)
- A lower frame rate (try playing at 60Hz)
If there are too many programs running in the background, using too much internet/RAM/Disk can cause Geometry Dash crashing on Windows 11.
Closing unwanted programs will help you eliminate the black screen on startup issue on your PC as your game would be able to get the required resources from Windows 11/10/7.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + ESC keys to open Task Manager
- Now check which program is using more Resources, usually indicated by a darker background
- Right-click on that program and select End task
Now check if the black screen on startup is solved or not.
Solution 5: Try Enabling/Disabling VPN while playing Geometry Dash
Still running into not opening error on Windows 11?
If you’ve got a VPN on, try turning it off to see if it makes a difference. If it’s off, switch it on and check again. But heads up! Don’t jump between too many regions; you don’t want to get blocked.
Remember, the right VPN can be a game-changer.
Solution 6: Add Game Exceptions on Antivirus PC
Sometimes antivirus thinks game files are bad guys and stops them, causing the shutdown.
To fix this, tell your antivirus that Geometry Dash files are cool by adding them to the “exceptions” list. This way, you can play without the antivirus messing things up!
Follow the steps below to add an exception on Antivirus (This guide is for Avast, and would be similar for other antiviruses):
- Launch Avast on your PC.
- Select Menu at the top-right corner of Avast.
- Choose Settings from the menu.
- From the left sidebar, choose General > Exceptions
- Click ADD EXCEPTION and then type the URL you want to add to it.
- Click ADD EXCEPTION to save the URL and check if you can access the URL
If you are still facing Avast Blocking Websites, continue to the next solution.
Solution 7: Check if Windows or Any Driver is Outdated
Sometimes compatibility issues can be a reason for continuous Geometry Dash not opening on Windows 11/10/7.
Often, it’s all about the updates. First off, head to your Windows settings and see if there’s an update waiting. While you’re on this updating spree, dive into your device manager and update your Wi-Fi drivers and update graphics drivers making sure they are on the latest versions.
These updates can make a big difference, fixing a lot of errors.
Solution 8: Contact Geometry Dash Support
Tried everything and that game error’s still bugging you?
As a last resort, head to the Geometry Dash’s official website and click ‘Support’ or ‘Contact’. Send them an email, jump into live chat, or post in their official forums.
Share what’s happening and any error messages. Remember to double-check you’re on the official site. Sometimes, reaching out is the best way to get back to gaming!
Stay smart and game on!
Final thoughts
In conclusion, experiencing crashes, shutdowns, black screens, or any other issues while playing Geometry Dash on your PC can be frustrating. However, with the solutions suggested in this article, you can troubleshoot and resolve these problems easily. Remember to restart your PC, run the program as an administrator, update the game, close intensive programs, and check for outdated drivers or software. Additionally, consider contacting Geometry Dash support or adding game exceptions on your antivirus settings if necessary. By following these simple steps, you can ensure a smoother gaming experience and enjoy the thrilling challenges of Geometry Dash without any disruptions. Happy gaming!

Hello!
So I bought Geometry dash few months ago (back when I was using Windows 8.1), last 4 months I upgraded my PC to Windows 10 for better bug fixes and stuff but seems like it’s for more bugs and errors.
So basically when I run Geometry Dash in Windows 8.1 it normally runs, nothing happens and stops its way from running normally, but yet after updating my PC I get to know this problem, as the title says, it’s black screen while running Geometry Dash.
When I run this game I get a blackscreen but I can still hear the music going on and I can still click buttons, I tried everything to fix it but without any results, ran as administrator, used compatibility mode, still stuck in that dark screen.
If there is anyone who plays Geometry Dash and can help It’d be much appreciated,
Regards;
Kath. -

IF you play in fullscreen mode, I might have a fix.
Try doing this:
- Right click on Geometry Dash in your Steam Library.
- Click on Properties.
- Select «Set Launch Options».
- Type in «windowed» and click Enter.
- Open the game.
Hope this worked! Good luck!
(If this doesn’t work I don’t know what will.)
If you DON’T play in Fullscreen mode, I don’t know how to fix it.
Sorry in advance if it doesn’t work.

Works good, but doesn’t feel comfortable when playing with that windowed resolution and task bar still shows, but thanks
better than nothing ^^

You can change it back to fullscreen when in game, try it!
I prefer playing in fullscreen but my friends prefer windowed, so I guess it’s just opinion.
I’m happy that it worked for you though, I thought it wouldn’t work! xDDD
