Download Windows Speedup Tool to fix errors and make PC run faster
We have seen how to turn your Windows computer into a DLNA streaming server, but if Media streaming is not working for you, here are a few things you may want to take a look at.
When you go on to click the Turn on media streaming button, either nothing happens, or it gets grayed out. If you face this issue, do the following:
- Clear Media Player cache
- Allow the device to play media
- Check Services
- Check Search Indexing status
- Check this Group Policy setting
- Run Hardware Troubleshooter
- Troubleshoot in Clean Boot State.
1] Clear Media Player cache
Open Windows File Explorer and navigate to the following location:
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Media Player
In this folder, delete all the files with file extension .wmdb. You may have to make Explorer show file extensions first. If you cannot delete those files, rename the Media Player folder itself to say, Media Player Old.
If you do not see the files with the .wmdb file extension in that location, see if you find them here, and delete the files or rename the folder as explained above:
%userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Media Player
Restart your computer. Once you run Media Player, these deleted files or the renamed folder will be automatically created.
2] Allow the device to play media
Open Windows Media Player and from the Stream drop-down menu, select Automatically allow devices to play my media.
In the next box which opens, select Automatically allow all computers and media devices. Now try and see.
3] Check Services
Run services.msc to open the Services Manager and ensure that the status of the following Services is as follows:
- Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service – Automatic (Delayed Start)
- Computer Browser – Manual (Trigger Start)
- UPNP Device Host – Manual
- Workstation – Automatic
- SSDP discovery Sevices – Manual
Having done this, right-click on all of these and select Start to start these Services. Now go back and try to turn on media streaming and see if it works.
4] Check Search Indexing status
If Windows Search Indexing is turned off, you might not be able to activate media streaming. So ensure that Search Indexing is enabled.
5] Check this Group Policy setting
Run gpedit.msc to open the Local Group Policy Editor and navigate to the following setting:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Media Player.
Here ensure that the Prevent Media Sharing setting is Not configured or Disabled.
6] Run Hardware Troubleshooter
Run the Hardware and Devices Troubleshooter and see if it helps.
7] Troubleshoot in Clean Boot State
If nothing helps, you may need to perform a Clean Boot and then try to troubleshoot the problem manually.
Hope something helps!

- Media Streaming Not Working on Windows 10: Fixed
Although there are third-party streaming solutions you can install on your computer, most users prefer using the built-in Windows Media Streaming feature.
Not only do you have one less piece of software to download on your PC, which may slow down your system speed, the built-in DLNA feature in Windows 10 is also much more reliable.
It may happen that this feature is not working for you on your Windows 10 PC. When you go to the Turn on media streaming button, it is either greyed out or does not respond when you click on it. If you are experiencing this issue, there are a handful of things you can do to fix it. Find them listed below:
- Fix the missing Media Feature Pack,
- Check if the Automatically allow devices to play my media option is enabled,
- Enable Windows Search Indexing,
- Check related services,
- Change Local Group Policy settings,
- Replace the Media Player cache folder.
Solution 1: Fix the missing Media Feature Pack
If you are using a Windows 10 N variant, media streaming will not be available. Windows N is the version of the Windows 10 operating system that does not have a media player or media functions.
The “N” stands for “no media features.” This means that Windows Media Player, which is a primary requirement for media streaming, is not installed on your PC.
Also, it could be that you have the Media Feature Pack but it is turned off.
Whatever the case may be, there are ways you can enable media features on your Windows 10 PC.
Move on to the next solution if Windows Media Player is functional on your computer.
However, if you need solutions on how to fix Media Feature Pack not working, there are 3 things you can do:
- Go to Windows Features and enable Media Features.
- Download the Media Feature Pack.
- Create a registry key.
Enable Media Features
- Press the
Windows logo key + R
on your keyboard to open the Run dialog. - Type optionalfeatures.exe in the text box. Click OK or hit Enter on your keyboard to open the Windows Features dialogue box.
- In the window, under Turn Windows features on or off, scroll down to the Media Features entry and tick the checkbox.
- Click OK. Wait for a few moments for Windows 10 to turn on Windows Media Player and other media features.
Download the Media Feature Pack
If you don’t have the Media Feature Pack installed on your computer, you can download it from Microsoft.com.
Make sure you select the correct system architecture (x64 or x86) when prompted. After you’ve downloaded it, double-click the file and follow the on-screen instructions.
Create a registry key
It is important that you create a system restore point before you go ahead and attempt this.
When Registry Editor is not used correctly, it can cause serious system-wide issues that will require you to reinstall your Windows operating system before they are corrected.
There’s also no guarantee that any problem that may occur by editing your registry can be fixed.
After you have created a restore point, follow these steps to edit the registry:
- Open the Run dialog box by pressing
Windows logo key + R
on your keyboard. - In the text box, type regedit, and then click OK or press Enter on your keyboard.
- Navigate to the path:
Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\WindowsFeatures\WindowsMediaVersion
- Change Value data of the WindowsMediaVersion key from 0 to 1. If it does not exist, you may have to create it. If there’s something like 12.0.17134.48 as Value data, it could be your Windows Media Player’s version number. Write it down somewhere and then change it to 1.
If this solution does not work, change Value data to the default value you wrote down or restore your system to the restore point you created earlier.
PRO TIP
Ensuring your system’s core features are functional is crucial, as is protecting it from malware. Auslogics Anti-Malware provides comprehensive scanning and real-time protection, safeguarding your system against threats that may arise from online activities, downloads, or system modifications.
Solution 2: Check if the “Automatically allow devices to play my media” option is enabled
You need to enable the automatic play option before you can cast or stream any multimedia file using Windows Media Player.
This only requires a simple procedure to get your media streaming working in no time.
Here’s what you have to do to enable automatic streaming in Windows Media Player:
- Launch Windows Media Player.
- On the Menu bar, you will see the Stream drop-down menu. Click on it.
- From the options under Stream, choose Automatically allow devices to play my media.
- Restart your Windows Media Player and check whether media streaming now works.

Solution 3: Enable Windows Search Indexing
Media streaming is linked to Windows Search Indexing and can be affected by it. If you have disabled Windows Search Indexing for some reason, you have to re-enable it before media streaming will start working.
Follow these easy steps to enable Windows Search Indexing:
- Go to Control Panel. To do this, press
Windows logo key + R
on your keyboard to open the Run dialog box. Type control panel and click OK or press Enter.
- In Control Panel, select Programs and Features.
- From the left pane, click on Turn Windows Features on or off.
- Select the Windows Search checkbox to enable it.
- Click OK and restart your PC to apply the changes.
Check to see if media streaming now works.
Just like every other Windows component, there are several related services that govern how media streaming functions.
After you’ve enabled media streaming, the status of these services will change to Active by default. However, in some cases, some of them may be permanently disabled.
This prevents media streaming from working.
To ensure that related services are up and running, observe the steps below:
- To open Services, go to the Windows Search bar and type
services.msc.
- Locate the UPnP host service in the list and right-click on it. Click on Properties from the menu.
- Set the Startup type to Automatic.
- Click on Stop > Start to restart the service.
- Click OK.
- Navigate to the Windows Media Player Network Sharing Service. Right-click on it, select Properties, and then repeat steps 3 to 5.
- Close Services and see if you can now use media streaming.
Solution 5: Change Local Group Policy settings
Local Group Policy is used for the management and configuration of certain permissions in your computer.
To prevent unauthorized streaming, there are some protective permission settings that are active. You have to disable them in order to resolve the “media streaming not working” issue.
This procedure requires administrator permission.
To disable the protective permission settings in the Local Group Policy Editor, follow these easy steps:
- To open the Local Group Policy Editor, go to the Windows search bar and type gpedit.msc.
- Navigate the path: Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Media Player.
- Right-click on Prevent Media Sharing. Click on Edit.
- Click on Disabled.
- Confirm changes.
- Restart your PC and try to use media streaming now. It should be working.
Solution 6: Replace the Media Player cache folder
Corrupted or incomplete Windows Media Player cache files and configuration data in the AppData directory can cause several issues, including media streaming not working.
To fix this problem, you can either rename the Media Player folder or delete it along with the files it contains.
When you next launch Windows Media Player, the folder will be re-created and the problem solved.
To rename the folder, observe this procedure:
- Copy the path:
%userprofile%\appdata\local\microsoft
- Go to your Windows search bar and paste it.
- In the window that opens, scroll down to Media Player and rename it to Media Player Old.
- Restart your PC and launch Windows Media Player. The media streaming issue should be resolved.
We hope you find these solutions effective in getting media streaming to start working on your PC.
PRO TIP
As a final note, it is important to get rid of invalid entries and corrupt keys in your registry. You can use Auslogics BoostSpeed to achieve this without causing any harm to your computer.
This tool will safely repair any glitches or crashes you may be experiencing while trying to use media streaming on Windows 10.
The media streaming not working issue occurs while trying to stream content using media streaming, and it won’t function properly. Some users say the media streaming feature is greyed out and won’t respond when clicking on it.

- Now, wait until Windows 11 downloads the latest version. Once downloaded, reboot the PC to let the latest version take effect.
4. Allow the Device To Play Media
If media streaming on Windows 11 is not allowed, then the media streaming won’t work properly. So, you must ensure that the automatic play option is enabled before streaming any multimedia file on Windows Media Player.
Follow the steps below:
- Open the Windows Media Player on your system.
- Next, expand the Stream drop-down menu on the menu bar.
- Then, select the option Automatically allow devices to play my media.
Click on Automatically allow devices to play my media - Now, restart the Windows Media Player and verify if it’s working fine or not.
5. Install Media Feature Pack
The media feature pack is the main requirement for media streaming to work properly on the Windows system. So, here you need to install the package to resolve the issue. Follow the below instructions to download and install the pack.
- Download the Media Feature Pack from the Microsoft Official Website.
- Tap the Download button and select your Windows version.
Select your Windows Version and Download - Wait for the pack to download.
- Once downloaded, tap the downloaded file and follow the on-screen instructions to install it.
- Now, launch the Windows Media Player and check the problem.
6. Enable Related Services
Media Sharing is dependent on some Windows services; when these services aren’t running or working properly, it can cause some features to stop working.
Follow the steps to enable the relevant services:
- Open the Run dialogue box by pressing Win and I keys together, and on the run box, type services.msc and press the Enter key.
- Then, on the next window, scroll down, select the UPnP host service, and right-click on it. Now, select Properties.
Select the UPnP host service - Expand the Startup type drop-down menu and set it to Automatic.

Navigate to Windows Media Player Network Sharing service - Choose Properties, set the Startup type to Automatic, and click Stop to close the service.
Choose Properties - Once closed, tap Start to restart it and click Ok once finished.
- Now, exit the services window and launch Media Streaming to check if the problem is solved.
7. Check the Search Indexing status
Windows Media Streaming is linked to the Search Indexing. Therefore, if search indexing on your system is disabled, it can somehow affect the Media Streaming working. So, you must ensure that Windows Search Indexing enables Media Streaming to work smoothly without interruption.
Follow the simple steps below to check and enable Windows Search Indexing:
- Hold the Win key and press the R key to launch the Run dialog.
- Now, on the box, type control, and press Enter key.
- On the Control Panel, click on Programs and Features.

Enable the Windows Search Indexing option - Tap Ok and reboot your system to allow the changes to take effect.
- Launch the Media Streaming to check if working fine now or not.
8. Configure the Group Policy Setting
Local Group Policy manages and configures certain permissions on your system. So, some automatic protective settings get activated by default to prevent unauthorized media from streaming. And such permissions sometimes can cause this problem on Windows Media Streaming. Therefore, you need to disable them manually to resolve the issue.
Follow the instructions below as guided to do so:
- Press the Win and R keys simultaneously to open the Run dialogue.
- Then, type gpedit.msc on the Run box.
Type gpedit.msc in the Run Box - Select the Computer Configuration option from the left and double-tap on Administrative Templates.

Many users prioritize the Windows Media Streaming feature before third-party streaming solutions. That’s an obvious choice if you instead trust built-in Windows features. However, it seems Media Streaming isn’t working for some users in Windows 10.
Supposedly, some of them encountered grayed-out features and could not start it. We prepared a few solutions that should help you substantially to address that. Make sure to check them out below.
1. Enable automatic play
- Open Windows Media Player.
- Click on the Stream drop-down menu near the Menu bar.
- From the drop-down menu, choose Automatically allow devices to play my media.
- Restart Windows Media Player and try again.
First things first, in order to cast or stream any multimedia file via Windows Media Player, you’ll need to enable automatic play. This procedure is simple, and you should be able to make it work quickly.
2. Turn on Search Indexing
- In the Search bar, type control and open Control Panel.
- Choose Uninstall a program under Programs.
- Click Turn Windows Features on or off from the left pane.
- Check the box next to a Windows Search Indexing to enable it.
- Restart your PC to apply changes.
A few knowledgeable users were reminded that Media Streaming is connected to Windows Search Indexing and, thus, can be affected. If you disabled Windows Search Indexing, we advise you to re-enable it.
This will, hopefully, resolve issues with Media Streaming.

- OpenAI decides to reverse recent GPT-4o update after user find bot being overly appeasing
3. Change the Local Group Policy
- In the Windows Search Bar, type gpedit.msc, and open Local Group Policy Editor.
- Follow this path:
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Media Player
- Right-click on Prevent Media Sharing and choose Edit.
- Click on Disabled and confirm changes.
- Restart your PC and try enabling Media Streaming again.
Local Group Policy is there for configuring and managing various permissions within a system. Now, there are some protective permission settings with the main purpose of preventing unauthorized streaming.
Therefore, you’ll probably want that setting disabled to fix the Media Streaming error. For that, you’ll need Administrative permission on your PC.
4. Check the related services
- In the Windows Search bar, type services.msc, and open Services.
- Navigate to UPnP host service, right-click it, and open Properties.
- Set the Startup type to Automatic, click Stop, and then Start to restart this service. Then click OK.
- Now, navigate to the Windows Media Player Network Sharing service and repeat the same procedure.
- Close Services and look for changes.
Like every other Windows component, Media Sharing has more than a few related services that govern everything. Now, by default, once you’ve enabled Media Streaming, they should change status to Active. However, it seems that some of them are, for no apparent reason, permanently disabled.
That occurrence will, consequently, prevent Media Streaming from commencing. Luckily, you can start them manually in a few simple steps.
5. Replace the Media Player cache folder
- Copy this path and paste it into the Windows Search bar:
%userprofile%appdatalocalmicrosoft
- Rename Media Player to Media Player.Old.
- Restart your PC and start Windows Media Player.
Windows Media Player stores cache and configuration data in the AppData directory. These files can get corrupted or incomplete and thus provoke a lot of issues with Windows Media Player or, in this distinctive occurrence, Media Streaming through Media Player.
You can delete this folder or its content, but we advise you to rename it and continue your life. The next time you start Windows Media Player, the system will re-create the Media Player folder so you can start from scratch.
That should do it. We certainly do hope you managed to overcome issues with Media Streaming and finally make it work. And once done, learn how to enable DLNA in Windows and stream data across compatible devices on the network.
