You may have faced an issue every time while going to shut down your PC that always says “NVcontainerwindowclass002030230 preventing shutdown” and then it shut downs. If this is the case, then don’t worry, we are on the same ride.
I also have faced a similar issue like this and I can assure you that this isn’t a big problem. NVcontainer of Windows class can prevent the shutdown if the application is running in the background. Thus, it takes time before shutting down your PC and shows ‘preventing shutdown’.
In this article, I am going to tell you the reason behind this issue and also show you how did I get rid of this warning message on my computer. So, what are you waiting for, let’s jump in!
Nvcontainer is a process also known as NVIDIA container, NVIDIA local system container, NVIDIA drivers, and NVIDIA Display Control which belongs to the software NVIDIA ( www.nvidia.com ).
It refers to the nvcontainer.exe file which is a necessary process of controllers and is mainly used to store other NVIDIA processes or other tasks. As it handles the NVIDIA tasks, it closes safely all the NVIDIA process while shutting down the PC and that’s why the PC shows that the NVcontainer Windows Class preventing shutdown.
What to Do Before Fixing the Nvcontainer of Windows Class Error
You can know whether nvcontainer is working in the background or not by using the security task manager. It will show you which app is starting automatically. In the security task manager for every process, you can see :
- Security elevation
- CPU usage graph
- Memory usage
- GPU usage
- Performance of the laptop or desktop
- App history etc.
It will help you to detect if the NVIDIA container is working in the background to prevent shutdown or not.
How to Solve the ‘Nvcontainer Windows Class Preventing Shutdown’ Issue
To prevent this problem there are some options for solving the problem. If one option doesn’t work you can use another option. The prominent options are-
- Uninstall NVIDIA GeForce Experience
- Update the display driver in the device manager
- Uninstall and reinstall the display driver in the device manager
- Run scan health and restore health
- Upgrade windows
Method 1: Uninstall NVIDIA GeForce Experience
To uninstall the NVIDIA GeForce experience you need to follow these steps:
Step 1: First, go to settings and open apps. Then go to the app and features.
Step 2: You can see a search bar, search for Windows NVIDIA GeForce experience or you can find it by scrolling down.
Step 3: Then place the mouse cursor on it and press the right button of the mouse.
Step 4: You can see uninstall option at the end of the options. Click Uninstall.
Step 5: At last, reset your computer and observe changes.
Method 2. Update Display Driver In Your Device Manager
Follow these steps:
Step 1: Press the windows key and X.
Step 2: Search for the device manager and open it.
Step 3: Search for the display adapter and expand it.
Step 4: Then place the mouse cursor on the display driver and press the right button of the mouse. Click Update driver software from there.
Step 5: Then select Search automatically for updated driver software.
Step 6: At last restart your computer and check.
Method 3. Uninstall And Reinstall Display Driver In Device Manager
Follow these steps:
- First, you are going to need DDU ( Display Driver Uninstaller ). Download the display driver uninstaller from the link.
- Run the display driver uninstaller. Restart the computer after the uninstallation of the display driver.
- Then you can see that your driver manager is showing a Microsoft Basic Display adapter.
- Download the display driver from NVIDIA ( www.nvidia.com ).
- Install the driver.
- Reset your computer and observe for changes.
Method 4: Run Scan and Restore Health
Step 1: Press Windows key and type: CMD
Step 2: Click Run as administrator
Step 3: Type in at the prompt OR Copy and Paste these one at a time: (Hit enter after each)
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
Also, run the System File Checker utility:
Step 1: Press Windows key and type: CMD
Step 2: Click Run as administrator
Step 3: On the Command Prompt, type: sfc /SCANNOW
This will check for any integrity violations
Step 4: Restart your system
Method 5: Upgrade windows
Windows update will be another fix you can try to resolve the error. I will describe the way below.
Step 1
Firstly, press the Windows and ‘I’ keys together to access the ‘Settings’ window. After that, scroll down to the bottom and select the ‘Update & Security’ section.
Step 2
Then look at the left sidebar of the newly appeared interface and click on the ‘Windows Update’ option.
Step 3
Next, give your concentration on the right sidebar. Here you will get the ‘Check for updates’ option. You have to click on it to check the availability of Windows updates. To apply this, you need an internet connection.
On the other hand, if your PC always has an internet connection, Windows will automatically download the update. And complete the installation.

nvcontainer windows class and empty config file
sometimes when I shutdown, it says closing one app and shutting down: nvcontainerwindowsclass000056C4″ or 0000396C and another one I forgot. Im not sure why. Another thing, I also have this issue where if I full scan using Kaspersky, it is unable to scan «windows\syswow64\config and anything beyond that. I found out that config was empty when hovering over it. Is any of this normal? I really need help, thanks.

- Changed both Profile config and Config File display text to richtext format. Now you can see the settings easier. I plain to turn the Config File Text display into a Real Text Editor, and not just a crappy notepad viewer. This new display will send the return carriage, and not show it.
- New screen shots of the General Tab and Config File tab have been added to the OP.

Windows 10 missing Multimedia Class Scheduler
My PC crashed and I had to reinstall my Windows 10 Home OS. After this fresh install, audio would no longer come out on my TV when I hook my laptop up via HDMI.
I looked around a few forums and found one here on the official site that suggested this step for the same problem:
=====
c. Scroll down through the list and find the following services.
Plug and PlayMultimedia Class Scheduler
Windows Audio Endpoint Builder
=====
The problem is, Multimedia Class Scheduler is not among the list of services.
The .sys file exists in my System32/drivers folder, at least.
Would downloading the mmcss.dll file solve my problem? All my audio and video drivers are updated, I’d been updating them repeatedly in the hopes that it would fix my problem.

I have a feeling the message is due to one of these tasks called by the Nvidia container/ wrapper waiting to complete and either stalling or taking it’s sweet time.

I hope that fixes it.
Any time I have any kind of problem with Nvidia… the first thing I do is re-install the driver.
I also disable driver updates, through Windows Updates, on Windows 11…
Sometimes a Windows update will include an update for a driver. This can occasionally, corrupt the driver in question.

Thanks for reaching out! I’m an Independent Advisor and a Microsoft user like you.
The nvcontainer is from Nvidia. Some say that this causes the system to slow down and show errors. You can find more information about the nvcontainer file here:
https://www.file.net/process/nvcontainer.exe.html
I do not have Kaspersky on my system but you may also try the following suggestions below and see if this would help.
Option 1: Uninstall Windows Nvidia GeForce Experience and check if you receive this error.
1. Click Windows > Settings > Apps > Apps & Features
2. Look for Windows Nvidia GeForce Experience and Click Uninstall.
3. Restart your computer and observe for changes.
Option 2. Update Display drivers in device manager
1. Press Windows key + X when you are on desktop.
2. Select Device Manager.
3. Expand Display adapters.
4. Right-click the display driver and click Update Driver Software.
5. Select Search Automatically for Updated Driver Software.
6. Restart and check.
Option 3: Uninstall and Reinstall your display drivers in device manager
Make sure the uninstallation of video drivers are properly done. Please follow the steps below. Uninstall your Display driver using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller).
1. Download DDU from the link:
https://www.guru3d.com/files-details/display-dr…
2. Run the DDU and make sure to reboot your pc once it has finished with the display driver uninstallation.
3. Once rebooted, make sure your device manager shows Microsoft Basic Display adapter.
4. Download the display driver from the OEM (ex. AMD or Nvidia)
5. Run the Setup to install your drivers.
6. Restart and Check for changes.
Option 4: Run MSConfig to check if one of the startup applications are causing the issue,
Please refer to this Microsoft article
https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/for…
Option 5: Run SFC with administrator rights in Command Prompt
a. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del on your keyboard > Select Task Manager or Right click on your Windows Taskbar > Select Task Manager
b. In Task Manager click File > Run New Task > A window will appear.
c. Make sure that there is a CHECK on the box beside Create this task with Administrator Privileges > Type cmd > Press Enter
Type the following command in the Command Prompt window

I hope that the steps mentioned would work in your favor. Let me know how it goes. Stay safe!
Option 7: Perform an in-place upgrade of your Windows 10. What it will do is to repair system issues, it rebuilds the system files without deleting anything personal files, the use of the in-place upgrade is not just to update the PC, but also to repair system

Hi, I will try and do this later. Also any idea about why the windows\syswow64\config folder is empty? I think that is why it wont scan it, but im confused as to why its empty.
Hi Lester29,
Thanks for the response. Sure please do give the steps a try. I do not have an exact idea why the config folder is empty, to my knowledge, if you use 32-bit programs then it’s libraries inside the folders should somehow show on the SysWOW64 folder. These 32-bit
programs store their files in C:\Program Files (x86), and the system-wide folder is C:\Windows\SysWOW64.
Hopefully, the suggested steps would be able to address that. If the scan issue only happens in Kaspersky and not in Windows Defender or other 3rd party antivirus apps, then it may be best to check with Kaspersky on this.
Try also to download the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool if you haven’t yet. Run it afterward and check to see if the same problem happens.

As an additional protection to your computer, you may also download the free version of Malwarebytes.
Download the free version from this link
Once installed please make a full scan. You may remove this Malwarebytes if you wish once you are done using it.
NOTE: You may also try running Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, Malwarebytes, or Kaspersky while you are in Safe Mode. Make sure to install the Tool first then follow the steps on the link start in Safe Mode.

Alright, so far 1 and 2 did not work.
Edit: Ok so, I installed expierience again. It shutdown quick and without the weird nvcontainer!!! This may have fixed it. Im not sure if its permanent however. I will see tomorrow and update it here.
edit 2: It started again. Ok now it stopped again. Ok i’ve realized this may or may not happen only when I dont launch nvidia geforce experience.
Edit: I think it might be random. Im not sure why this happens.
Hi,
Thanks for the update. Try to select Diagnostic startup from method 4. Then go to Startup Tab to open task manager and uncheck all startup applications for testing. Now if that solves the issue, what you can do to isolate the problematic startup applications
is to check the boxes one by one, restart and observe. To reenable those options again just go back to msconfig. Try to disable and reinstall your Kaspersky Antivirus as well just for testing. Let’s see how it goes. Keep safe.
Hi, I want to go to the store where I bought it from today. Ill see if I find any answers.
Edit: I was on nvidia forums looking for help. I saw people with similar issues. Some said that it got fixed in driver version 436.51. Currently im on a newer version but maybe updating to latest will fix it. Ill give it a try after I get back from store.
If I can, Ill explain what I know here. Wait, I just noticed that im using an older version. That might be the cause.
Hi,
Noted. Sure do try the suggestion that you were able to find in the nvidia forums. Keep me posted.
Will definitely keep you updated. Ill visit the store in which I bought my pc, monitor, keyboard, mouse, basically everything. If I find a good answer ill try it. I might also asked them about the config file thats empty! Thanks.
