Removing windows server essentials experience from Windows Server 2016 server
I have a Windows Server 2016 Standard which was previously a Windows Essentials 2016 running in a HyperV role. Can I safely remove the Windows Server Essentials Experience function without breaking anything?
I have the same question for one of my virtual servers which is currently running a BDC, DNS, Certificate Server, File server, — and is using a Windows Server Essentials license.
Please don’t point that I need to clean-up the environment I realize that — it was inherited. I also need to get max utilization of the licenses I have which are 1 Standard and 1 Essentials; per my understanding one Standard license can support a HyperV, a DC and one functional Server and I should be able to have 1 DC and 1 functional server with the Essentials license.
Thank you Microsoft for making our life complicated with your licensing.

Windows Server 2016 Essentials upgrade to Windows Server 2016 Standard
I had an OEM version of Windows Server 2016 Essentials installed.
I wanted to use Remote Desktop for 3 users, which essentials cant do.
I have installed an evaualtion of Windows Server 2016 Standard, and have got 3 users remote connecting to the server to run an accounting application.
Thats fine, i have purchased 3 cals for Windows Remote Desktop Services.
My question.
Can i upgrade from 2016 Essentials (which i bought) to Windows Server 2016 Standard, or do i have to buy a new Server 2016 license?

Purchased a new server and Windows Server 2016 Essentials to be an app server running on Hyper-V. Install and joining a domain went
ok until the Configure Windows Server Essentials wizard ran. Few seconds after starting the wizard I got an error «Configuration encountered some issues» and the full message «Please restart the server, and then run the configuration wizard again. If the issue
still exists please refer to the help link for more troubleshooting steps.»Did a restart and still the same.
The link is worthless (taking me to a page «Troubleshooting information that is related to a Windows Server 2012 R2 Essentials installation is currently not available»)
On Google found many users with similar problems but none of the sugestions worked for me ( ‘Log on as a service’ -even added
the needed accounts and making sure they were configured as indicated; new user with admin rights, local security policy added the needed users, …)If there is no resolution for this wizard, can I just remove the role and in registry remove the entry to run this wizard at startup? Or leave the role and ignore the wizard?
Can I move forward with installing the needed apps(SQL, …) on the server (because manually renaming, joining the domain, fix IP adress went ok) or this wizard is for configuring something else?

Решил написать подробную инструкцию по установке и настройке нового Windows server 2016 Essentials, а заодно и сделать небольшой обзор новых возможностей этой серверной «оси».
Почему собственно Essentials ?
Многие малые компании начинают свою работу с покупки Windows server standard.
И зря тратят деньги!
Ведь если в вашей компании, например, планируется работа до 25 пользователей в 1С Предприятии, тогда Вам идеально подойдет именно Essentials!
Минус, на мой взгляд, здесь только один:
Нет, возможность поднять службу терминалов для удаленной работы пользователей на этом сервере в 1С (Использовать обычный всем нам знакомый удаленный рабочий стол).
Эта версия лицензируется по количеству процессоров на сервере и главное не требует CAL лицензий! (клиентские лицензии на подключение).
Но большинству малых предприятий с уверенностью можно рекомендовать редакцию Essentials.
Экономия здесь очевидна:

Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2 Standard Edition x64 Russian 2CPU/2VM DVD ОЕМ –
Обойдется примерно в ~ 43 000 руб. + CAL на каждого пользователя еще примерно ~1500 руб.
(20 пользователей = 30 000 руб).
Итого: ~ 73 000 руб.
Тогда как Microsoft Windows Server Essentials 2016 Single Multilanguage
Обойдется нам примерно в ~ 26 000 руб!
Если сравнивать редакции Essentials и Standard, на предмет функционала, то с уверенностью можно казать что Essentials почти не уступает Standard, все нужные основные компоненты и роли там также доступны, а сама операционная система идеально подойдет начинающим системным администраторам, так как многие функции, можно реализовать двумя, тремя кликами мышкой.
Много нового появилось в этой версии, и действительно есть, что рассказать, но об этом позже, пока скачаем дистрибутив Windows server 2016 Essentials и установим его.
Скачать бесплатно пакет установки рекомендую на сайте Microsoft.

Итак, если образ *ISO скачали (его размер около 4500 Mb).
Запишем его на диск или сделаем «загрузочную флешку» здесь кому как удобно и приступаем к установке.
Сама установка довольно простая, и некоторые трудности могут быть лишь при настройке (первичной) редакции Essentials.

Укажем “Формат времени и денежных единиц” Ваша страна.
И выберем из списка “Метод ввода (раскладка клавиатуры)”, затем клик “Далее”.

Клик по кнопке “Установить”. Затем в следующем окне введем “Ключ продукта” (Тот который мы получили еще на сайте Microsoft когда качали установочный пакет). Так Essentials будет активирован в тестовом периоде на 180 дней.

and the Windows Server 2012 Essentials edition rebooting the system at
inopportune times for updates. You can temporarily delay the shutdown by
issuing the command net stop "windows update" at a command
prompt. Note: you need to open an admin command prompt to do so, which
you can do by moving the mouse pointer to the lower, left-hand corner
of the screen, then right-clicking on the Start button when it
appears and choosing Command Prompt (Admin). But that will only
postpone the reboot, because Windows will later restart the service on
its own, even if you don’t reboot. You can determine if it has restarted
by reissuing the command. You will see a message «The Windows Update
service is not started», if it isn’t running.
C:\Windows\system32>net stop "windows update" The Windows Update service is stopping. The Windows Update service was stopped successfully. C:\Windows\system32>net stop "windows update" The Windows Update service is not started. More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3521.
You can pemanently disable the automatic restart by changing the
group policy for
the system by running gpedit.msc, which you can run by
issuing the command gpedit at a command prompt or by
right-clicking on the Start button, choosing Run and
then typing gpedit.msc and hitting Enter. When
the Local Group Policy Editor window opens, navigate to
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates >
Windows Components > Windows Update.
In the right pane of the window, you will see «No auto-restart with logged on
users for scheduled automatic updates installations».
Double-click on that text. You will then see a window where you can
change the setting from its default value of «Not Configured».
Change the setting to Enabled.
You will see the following help information displayed for the setting:
Specifies that to complete a scheduled installation, Automatic Updates
will wait for the computer to be restarted by any user who is logged on,
instead of causing the computer to restart automatically.If the status is set to Enabled, Automatic Updates will not restart
a computer automatically during a scheduled installation if a user is
logged in to the computer. Instead, Automatic Updates will notify the
user to restart the computer.Be aware that the computer needs to be restarted for the updates to
take effect.If the status is set to Disabled or Not Configured, Automatic Updates
will notify the user that the computer will automatically restart in 5
minutes to complete the installation.Note: This policy applies only when Automatic Updates is configured to
perform scheduled installations of updates. If the «Configure Automatic
Updates» policy is disabled, this policy has no effect.
You can then click on Apply and OK. You will then
see a Windows Update message stating «You need to restart your PC to
finish installing important updates», if you lock the screen, but
the system won’t automatically reboot.
Note: you can use gpedit.msc to make the same change on
some other versions of Windows, such as «Professional» editions of Windows 7.
