The era of Gameloft Windows Phone 8 support is in full swing. Already the prolific publisher has graced us with an amazing racer (Asphalt 7), two less amazing but still decent open world games (Amazing Spider-Man and Dark Knight Rises), and a surprisingly enjoyable physics puzzler (Shark Dash). It’s almost like they’re single-handedly keeping the Xbox brand alive on Windows Phone.

Now Gameloft follows up with Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour, the second Windows Phone title with real-time online multiplayer and the platform’s only first-person shooter so far (until N.O.V.A. 3 comes along). FPS games on the phone are new for many of us — including me. Read on to find out how well Modern Combat 4 works as both a single-player and multiplayer game!

Save the president, kill the president

Modern Combat 4 villains

I haven’t played past games in the series, but I understand that Modern Combat 4’s story builds off of its predecessors, with a handful of characters returning for this installment. Don’t worry though, as this game’s narrative (which unfolds through fully-voiced and subtitled cinema scenes) basically plays like a Hollywood blockbuster that anyone can comprehend.

Terrorists kidnap the president and plot to bring down not only the US government but the entire capitalist world; it’s up to a handful of heroic soldiers to stop them. The twist is that several levels put players in control of Page, the leader terrorist, and show the conflict from his perspective.

Modern Combat 4 two perspectives

Left: Villain’s perspective. Right: Hero’s.

Now, Page is a complete jerkwad with insufferable dialogue, so I didn’t relish my time in control of him or seeing him interact with (bully) others. Gameloft should have crafted a more charismatic and tolerable villain before forcing us to spend so much time with him. Depicting a conflict from two sides is admirable, but all we get of the villains’ viewpoint is “Kill America!” without any actual explanation of their grievances.

Thrill a minute

Modern Combat 4 drone and QTE

Left: Drone driving. Right: A simple Quick-Time Event.

All the latest news, reviews, and guides for Windows and Xbox diehards.

Story gripes aside, Modern Combat 4’s single-player campaign is actually pretty awesome. The game thrusts you into action from the get go, as the heroic military forces storm an island resort that’s been taken over by mercenaries. The graphics are undoubtedly the most detailed and beautiful seen on Windows Phone so far. Environmental explosions, realistic lighting, and believable physics (powered by Havok) all create an exciting and console-like experience from the get-go.

The campaign is broken up into 12 levels, each of which lasts about 20-30 minutes. The levels simply overflow with variety, and not just because of the perspective bouncing back and forth between good and evil. Of course there is lots of running and gunning, spread across lots of different environments like an island, city streets, office buildings, factories, and even an Antarctic base.

The developers also keep the standard first-person gameplay from getting stale by mixing in different objectives and activities every few minutes. Players will clear paths for soldiers by manning the gun on an AI-driven, ground-based drone; man the turret on a Humvee; protect a target from the air by gunning from a helicopter; chase down a very annoying character called Saunders on foot, and more.

The only activity I didn’t care for is an ill-advised stealth section later in the game. Are stealth missions in non-stealth games fun? No, and in fact there is an unwritten law that stealth sections must be terrible. At least the mission just switches to normal gameplay after the player gets discovered though.

Shooting on the go

Modern Combat 4 Windows Phone

I fancy myself an adaptive gamer; I can enjoy playing an FPS game with a controller, mouse, or keyboard. Playing Modern Combat 4 on a touch-screen is a learning experience, but I got used to it by the third level and just had fun from then on. It helps that the controls are logical and well-laid out.

You move your character with the virtual stick on the left, which stays in a fixed position, unlike Gameloft’s open-world games. Swiping anywhere on the screen looks around, which you’ll mostly do with your right thumb. I did use my left thumb to control looking whenever I manned a turret or drone though. At the bottom of the screen there are buttons for crouching/standing, sprinting, zooming the view, and shooting. Tapping the gun at the top reloads, while swiping it toggles between your secondary firearm.

Because we only have two thumbs to work all the controls (as opposed to both our thumbs and forefingers on a physical controller), shooting while both looking and moving is impossible (unless you enable the Gyroscope for looking). But you can do any two of those at once, and the mild auto-aim helps reduce the need for constantly adjusting the view. The game is designed around the controls, so you’re never put in a situation in which they can’t keep up with the challenge.

Upgrades

Modern Combat 4 upgrades

Left: Single-player upgrades. Right: Multiplayer upgrades.

As you kill enemies and complete objectives during the campaign, you’ll earn credits that can be spent on upgrades, gun attachments, and items in the shop. Permanent upgrades do handy stuff like increase your health or decrease reloading time, while gun attachments improve your firepower.

Players also earn credits from kills and other objectives in multiplayer games, but the credits aren’t shared between the two modes. Multiplayer credits can only be spent on multiplayer upgrades and vice-versa. You’ll want to save up for a decent multiplayer gun ASAP, as the starting gun’s magazine size is so small that you’re bound to get killed while reloading quite often. Tying guns to credits instead of spawning them on the map makes for a rather unbalanced experience.

Multiplayer

Modern Combat 4 Windows Phone multiplayer

A lot of effort has gone into Modern Combat 4’s multiplayer mode, and yet so few of us will get to properly enjoy it. A healthy multiplayer game needs a large community. Asphalt 7 had a great community at launch thanks to its low price. Modern Combat 4 costs much more, so less players are bound to pick it up.

Only phones with 1 GB of RAM can even run the game, so scratch 512 MB devices off the list of potential players. Then the game requires a minimum of 5 Gigabytes of storage space (unless you successfully cue the download through the Windows Phone Store website), so many gamers just plain won’t be able to fit it onto their devices no matter what. These factors combine to put a huge cap on the potential community size.

Some of those things are out of Gameloft’s hands, but bad matchmaking also makes it harder to find games. Yes, you can invite your Xbox Live friends now and party up (much like an Xbox 360 game) to jump between games as a group. So far so good.

But there is no quick match option to find random Ranked games (the only ones eligible for earning XP, credits, or Achievements). Instead, you select from eight different Ranked game types and then sit in a lobby until someone joins. There’s no way to tell who’s playing what game type, so I imagine a lot of players will just sit in empty lobbies for a few minutes and then give up. The Windows Phone version has no way to communicate with other players, either.

Multiplayer can still be fun if you get a few friends together (which you’ll need to coordinate outside of the game, of course). It’s just a shame that the matchmaking system is built for a game with a massive community instead of one with a tiny community, as all real-time phone games will invariably possess. Also note that the maps are designed for up to 12 players, so even if you get a game of 2-4 players going, you’ll be doing lots of roaming around the map in search of your opponents.

Achievements

Modern Combat 4 Windows Phone sniping

Modern Combat 4 lacks an Achievement for beating the campaign, which is always a drag. There are a few fun single-player Achievements though, such as killing an enemy with a ricocheted throwing knife. The most time-consuming single-player Achievement is for scoring 1000 headshots, which will probably require several playthroughs to earn.

Single-player also has one apparently broken Achievement for completing a mission without taking damage. No one has been able to figure it out so far, and given Gameloft’s track record, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s impossible.

Unfortunately, there are also at least six multiplayer Achievements. I say unfortunately because it’s hard enough to get multiplayer games going, and experienced players will have better gear than new players, making it difficult to win matches naturally. Plus the Achievement for winning a 10-player game basically has to be boosted. Getting 10 players together all at once is not a fun prospect, and then you have to make sure everybody gets a win, too. Not very well thought out at all.

Overall Impression

Some folks complain that FPS games don’t work well on touch-screen devices, but many of those destractors don’t seem to have actually played any such games (and certainly not the Modern Combat series). If you take that attitude without trying Modern Combat 4, you’re doing yourself a disservice. Playing a game of this scope and graphical fidelity on Windows Phone is so much more exciting than throwing another bird at a tower for the millionth time. It takes a little getting used to, but the reward is a beautiful and action-packed campaign that actually outdoes some console games.

MC4‘s multiplayer doesn’t fare as well as single-player thanks to poor matchmaking, too-large maps, and the imbalanced upgrade system. And the difficulty of earning that 10-player Achievement, not to mention the probably broken ‘Elusive Target’ also bring things down a notch. But for many gamers, the top-notch story mode will make up for those shortcomings. If you want a real console-style experience on your phone, look no further.

After delivering top selling games like Asphalt 7, The Amazing Spiderman and The Dark Knight Rises, Gameloft delighted avid Windows Phone 8 gamers around the globe with Modern Combat 4 this week. And boys I tell ya, this is the by far most intense mobile game available for our beloved platform as of yet. Its stunning visuals, fully voiced dialogs and story pushing cut scenes offer an experience which comes close to games you’ve been playing on your Xbox 360 or the like.

The Saga

Modern Combat originated back in 2009 on iOS, Android and even webOS. Unlike its successors, it only offered a single player campaign, but it was the first game that raised the bar for mobile First Person Shooters. Since then Gameloft has published Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus and Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation, with part 2 being the first mobile FPS to offer players a full-fledged multiplayer experience.

MC View WP

Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour arrived last December for iOS and Android leaving us behind for a mere 4 months. Considering how long it took Gameloft to release Asphalt 7 for WP, which had been available for both competing platforms for ages, this is a huge step in the right direction, giving hope that future titles will be available for iOS, Android and WP the very same day.

Visuals and Sound

MC4 utilizes the Unity game and Havok physics engine, which is the very reason, why it will not be available for Windows Phone 7 devices. It is without a doubt the best looking game for WP so far. High detailed character models, great looking environments, lense flare effects, volumetric smoke and particle effects, explosions and projectiles all around you, MC4 has everything you would expect from a good FPS. Fear not! The entire experience is buttery smooth. You won’t notice a single stutter, no matter how many opponents you’re facing. Makes one wonder how The Amazing Spiderman and The Dark Knight Rises can be such a lag fest.

MC Visuals In Gameplay

The sound may seem a little weak, at least on the Nokia Lumia 920. But that’s due to the speakers. If you play it with headphones, you’ll certainly not be disappointed with the effects. The music is pretty good as well, though not outstanding.

Gameplay and Controls

The story is very typical for the shooter genre. Take some evil guys gathering around an even more evil leader who attacks the world with nuclear weapons and even kidnaps the president of the United States, add a hero and some companions to the mix and voilà, there’s your plot. Shooter fans won’t mind the lack of a deeper story with some dramatic climaxes. Gameloft did a very good job telling the tale though. Every single dialog, be it in a cut scene or during a mission is completely and perfectly voiced. Should you be afraid your English isn’t good enough to follow through, just enable subtitles in one of the 10 available languages.

MC Gameplay Controls

While running from checkpoint to checkpoint and working your to do list, your missions range from clearing a sector using a remotely controlled drone, taking down a certain enemy to driving on the back of a car trying to make your way through the hostile lines.

My biggest feat with MC4 was the controls. They could’ve been messed up easily, by just being all laggy or imprecise. Fortunately they’re not. To be honest, they’re on spot. You can choose from 3 different control schemes to find one which suits you most. Even the gyroscope is supported; I wouldn’t recommend using it though as it’s not the most comfortable way of playing a fast paced game.

Multiplayer

Modern Combat 4 offers true multiplayer. You can either play over WiFi or online using the Gameloft servers. Players can choose from several types of matches like deathmatch, team deathmatch, capture the flag and so on. Matches can be played either ranked or unranked. Ranked matches influence your place in the global leaderboards and your character’s experience level. The latter determines which roles you’ll be able to play in a match and which weapons you’re able to purchase.

MC Multiplayer Mode

Multiplayer was as smooth for me as the single player campaign. I didn’t have the slightest lag. Unfortunately it doesn’t work cross platform, so you can only play against other Windows Phone users.

Conclusion

Due to its amazing graphics, it requires 1 GB of RAM and comes as a 1 GB download. Means you need to have about 4.5 GB of space available on your device in order to be able to download and install the game. Even though the sheer size of the game may be a drawback, it’s totally worth it.

Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour is a 2012 first-person shooter developed and published by Gameloft Montreal for mobile phones, iOS, Android, Windows Phone 8, BlackBerry 10 and BlackBerry PlayBook. It is the fourth game in the Modern Combat series, and is a sequel to 2009’s Modern Combat: Sandstorm, 2010’s Modern Combat 2: Black Pegasus and 2011’s Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation. A sequel was released in 2014, Modern Combat 5: Blackout.

The iOS version of Zero Hour supports the iPhone 5.[4] Gameloft released a gameplay teaser on September 25, 2012, along with a new Modern Combat website. The teaser trailer showed high definition graphics, but with some graphical improvements over its predecessors, such as real-time shadows. Other improvements include more «military support» options, more tactical gameplay and more advanced campaign programming. The game is set in a dystopian year 2037, where the SGS, an undercover armed force, dominates the world and fights against Phantom Unit.

Example of a drone mission in Modern Combat 4.

The basic gameplay in Zero Hour is similar to the three previous games in the series, and also similar to the Call of Duty games. However, Zero Hour is more derivative of Call of Duty: Black Ops II and Call of Duty: Black Ops than the Modern Warfare series (Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3), upon which the previous games in the series were based. Unlike the previous games, the players also control the antagonist Edward Page for some selected levels, as well as assume the role of a drone operator in a level. The players also control Sergeant Anderson in one level.
The game is controlled using virtual buttons on-screen; a virtual control stick is used for movement, while aiming is achieved by swiping on the touchscreen. Gyroscopic controls are also featured. The player can also crouch, throw grenades, use their weapon’s iron sights, reload, change weapon, pick up different weapons, knife enemies, mantle obstacles, and shoot using buttons and prompts on the touchscreen. All controls can be customized from the main menu. The single-player campaign also includes Quick time events.

As with the three previous games, Zero Hour features a multiplayer mode. Like Fallen Nation, twelve players can participate in any given game. The game features several maps based on levels and areas in the single-player campaign, with numerous game types available, such as «Battle», «Team Battle» and «Capture the flag». Players can customize six different ‘classes’, with slots available for primary weapons, secondary weapons, attachments for both, grenades, equipment and a perk. Different weapons can be bought for money earned by completing matches and killing enemies. Unlike other games in the series, Zero Hours multiplayer features the ability for players to climb over obstacles, an ability previously only available in single-player mode.

The game begins as Lieutenant Walker (one of the protagonists from Modern Combat 3: Fallen Nation) gives a speech to his squad mates on board a troopship, warning them that the upcoming struggle is going to be extremely difficult. The ships reach a beach in Hawaii, and the player takes control of Corporal Joel Blake as he fights his way to a stronghold to rescue a group of politicians who were attending a peace summit, which was named as the C3 (Centralized Currency Consortium) Conference. Amongst the hostages is the US President, they meet Lieutenant Downs (a major NPC in Black Pegasus and Fallen Nation) and storm the stronghold, the team discovers that the security hired for the summit, a private military company called Saunders Global Security, are in fact the ones responsible for the attack and the hostage situation.

The game then switches to the perspective of Edward Page (a supporting antagonist in Fallen Nation) two days prior to the invasion of Hawaii. A former Green Beret, he is now turned against the US and has vowed to destroy the country and undermine its political ideologies. Accompanied by another former Green Beret, and CEO of Saunders Global Security, Everett Saunders, Page infiltrates the War Crimes Investigations building in Seattle, and destroys it. Meanwhile, Sergeant Anderson (one of the protagonists in Black Pegasus and a major NPC in Fallen Nation), now part of the AFTER (Americas First Tactical Emergency Response) Operatives fights his way through the devastated streets of Seattle towards the WCI building only to discover that the destruction of the building was a distraction, so that Page could kidnap the US President in Hawaii.

After the mission in Hawaii fails to rescue the President, Intel confirms that Saunders is somewhere in the city of Barcelona, so Walker, Blake and Downs are dispatched to find him and extract information on where Page may have taken the President. They eventually locate Saunders, but after a long chase he is apparently killed, not before he provides Blake with a hard disc containing intel on Page. During the mission, it is revealed that Page has started a terrorist group named Unified Citizens and is using SGS as protection.

Based on the info from the disc, the team is then sent to South Africa, where it has been discovered that Page was using the SGS base as cover. Briefly after attacking the base, Blake is knocked out of his helicopter and forced to fight his way through the base alone. He rescues the President and then reunites with Walker and Downs. The president gives information indicating that Page is holding up in a base in Antarctica.

The team along with Anderson (who «volunteered» for the operation) is dispatched, and discover that Page plans to fire a bioweapon named H5N1 capable of killing about 4 billion people, in an effort to «restart» the human race. Anderson and Blake are ordered to wait for a hazmat squad to arrive, but Anderson disobeys orders and begins planting bombs on the bioweapon canisters. However, he is attacked and stabbed by Page whilst planting the bombs. Before he dies, Anderson tells Blake (who was trapped outside the bioweapon room by Anderson) to detonate the bombs. Blake does so, with the blast killing Anderson and incapacitating Page.

When Page regains consciousness, he finds that US soldiers are breaking into the base and planting bombs on the bioweapon canisters. Realising that he is defeated, an enraged Page fights his way through the base and attacks Downs and Walker, shooting Downs in the arm and fighting hand-to-hand with Walker. Page overpowers Walker and is about to kill him when Blake attacks him from behind, killing him and saving Walker’s life. Walker, Blake and Downs then flee the building before it blows up.

In a post-credits scene, it is revealed that Saunders is alive. He states that he was using Page all along, and that he has already put in motion the first part of a terrorist attack of his own, claiming that soon the US «will know the true meaning of terror.»

Whereas Sandstorm featured seven weapons and Black Pegasus featured fifteen, Zero Hour features twenty-one, as had Fallen Nation, in addition to throwing knives, grenades, different equipment and several «perks». Weapons can also be fitted with numerous attachments like red dot sights, silencers and extra-large magazines.

Unlike in Sandstorm and Black Pegasus which featured predominantly real world weaponry, the weapons in Zero Hour follow those in Fallen Nation insofar as they are fictional, but based on real world counterparts.

Weapons include a Black Mamba (based on the Chiappa Rhino), a Charbtek VECT9 (M4A1), a Charbtek-28 (M27), a CTK-88 Crumplor (AT4), an E24 SASR (Remington Semi Automatic Sniper System), a Compakt 665 (SIG556), a Kolbászky S-40 GL (Brügger & Thomet GL-06), a SOCAR-S A1 (CZ-805 BREN), a Tygr X3 (CZ Scorpion Evo 3 A1), a Viny Pro (Uzi), a Volkhov-12 (Saiga-12) and an X6 .338 (XM2010 Enhanced Sniper Rifle), a KR200 (AK47), a Schoc 33 (Glock 18)

Although the iOS version received «favorable» reviews according to the review aggregation website Metacritic, such reviews tended to feel that the Modern Combat series had become somewhat stagnant.[5]

IGNs Justin Davis said, «Much like the Call of Duty franchise that it apes, Modern Combat 4 can sometimes feel more like soulless and disconnected series of set-piece battles instead of a cohesive FPS experience. The 13-mission, 4-hour campaign feels designed by check-box. Unmanned drone mission? Check. Sniper segment? Check. A contrived occurrence separates you from your squad? Check check check […] This is the first Modern Combat title that isn’t a clear improvement over its predecessor.» However, he did conclude by stating «Modern Combat 4 might be a small step backwards but it’s still an impressive, action-packed adventure. At its best, the game offers up real moments of intense gunplay.»[7] Carter Dobson of 148Apps wrote, «Really, what Modern Combat 4 does is that it’s not an original game. Its influences are clear. But Gameloft knows how to do [sic] make a game with high production values, that loses little because of the transition. I’m never going to expect these games to have perfect controls because it’s practically impossible given just a touchscreen to use. But for those that want to sit in Starbucks and pwn some noobs instead of doing it from their couch, well, that’s why these games exist. And as the technology improves, they’re more closely resembling their inspirations.»[14] Pocket Gamers Harry Slater was critical of several aspects, saying, «Poor pacing, baffling AI, and odd checkpoints add to the feeling that the game needed a little longer in development, and a slew of glitches and bugs cement that fact […] Multiplayer feels a little tighter, but the bugs that riddle the single-player remain in place.» He echoed IGN in stating, «Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour isn’t a step forward for the series. In fact, in many cases, it’s a step back, with bugs and crashes turning entertainment into frustration. But, and this is a big but, there’s really nothing else like it out there right now.»[11]

Slide To Plays Chris Reed was more positive, writing, «Modern Combat 4: Zero Hour is yet another solid addition to the mobile FPS franchise. It sports a lengthy single-player campaign, top-notch multiplayer content, and enough changes and tweaks to make it a worthy purchase even to people who played last year’s model.»[15] TouchArcades Eric Ford felt that the game’s single-player mode failed to advance on the others in the series, saying, «outside of the visual improvements Zero Hour really hasn’t changed much in regards of the single player campaign. Sure, there’s a new adventure with different places to go and people to kill, but it’s all been done at this point.»[13] TouchGens Nigel Wood was impressed, arguing that the ability to play some levels as the antagonist was a well implemented idea and saying, «I particularly liked one instance where as Page you witness three special forces abseiling into your compound, and must make your way to the escape route with the captured president – all the while taking out other special forces. Once the level is complete, you then become one of the abseiling special forces guys and must chase the same Page you were just playing, to try and save the President. It’s a nice touch to the usual, linear, proceedings.» He was also impressed with the graphics, saying, «It’s easily the best looking FPS on iOS no matter what device you play it on. From the well designed and easy to use interface, to the highly detailed and large environments, it’s a real eye pleaser.»[16]
