K-Meleon
Home > Download > InstallerForWindows2000
NOTE: Windows 98 is no longer supported by Microsoft and has significant unpatched security vulnerabilities. This community installer is not officially supported by Microsoft or K-Meleon. Use caution connecting to any network with Windows 9X systems.
➥Download K-Meleon 1.5.4 for Windows 98
This installer will install K-Meleon 1.5.4 (one of the last versions to support Windows 98) with Roytam’s Transport Layer Security (TLS) patch. Most web browsers designed for Windows 9X systems did not support TLS and cannot access modern sites using the HTTPS protocol. The installer supports Windows 95, 98, 98 SE, Me, and 2000. Windows XP and later are supported in the current version of K-Meleon.
You can visit the forum for more information about the TLS patch, or read the release notes for details about K-Meleon 1.5.4.
Windows 95-specific issues
The original Windows 95 common control 32-bit library (Comctl32.dll) had several bugs that will prevent applications, including K-Meleon, from running. Before running K-Meleon, you will need to update Comctl32.dll to version 5, which Microsoft distributed with Internet Explorer (IE) 5 and IE 5.5. If you already have the IE update, K-Meleon should start up with functioning toolbars. If the browser does not start or does not have functioning toolbars follow the steps below:
- Download either Comctl32.dll v5.0 from ToastyTech.com or v5.82 (32-bit) from dll-files.com. 5.0 provides bettery memory management and 5.82 provides the best compatibility and performance.
- Rename the file to something_else.dll and save the file to the C:\Windows\System\ folder. There will already be an existing Comctl.dll file in this folder.
- Click the Start button, select Shut Down, select Restart in MS-DOS Mode, and click OK to reboot. Your computer will now reboot to a DOS command prompt. You will have to replace the library from DOS because Windows requires it while running.
- Type the lines below one at a time. This will preserve a copy of your old library as a .txt file in case you need to revert the process at any point. When your computer restarts, K-Meleon should work normally.
cd\ cd windows cd system ren Comctl32.dll Comctl32x.txt ren something_else.dll Comctl32.dll win
Getting online in Windows 95 is different than other operating systems. The internet had not truly taken off when Windows 95 was released and you’ll find that it’s much simpler even in Windows 98 by comparison. If you do not already have it on your system, you will need the Dial-Up Networking (DUN) 1.4 upgrade. You can download DUN 1.4 from WinWorldPC.com to enable the connection. If you are installing on a virtual machine, you may also need patches to compensate for Windows 95’s inability to run on faster machines.
386-specific issues
K-Meleon will not run on i386 class processors. The compiled binary requires «cmpxchg» comparison instructions. Intel introduced cmpxchg with their i486 processors. To run K-Meleon on earlier processors you will need to replace several libaries with legacy versions from the development thread. To replace the libraries for a 386 processor:
- Refer to this forum thread by the developer: http://kmeleonbrowser.org/forum/read.php?22,151512,156871
- Download the KM154-i386DLLs.7z archive from the thread.
- Extract the files using an archiver like 7-zip.
- Copy and paste the library files freebl3.dll and js3250.dll into your root K-Meleon folder where K-Meleon.exe is located.
- When windows asks if you want to replace the existing files select yes and proceed.
- Start K-Meleon.
Modern Windows Issues
For Windows XP and up, you can use the current K-Meleon releases. If you are testing 1.5 or the community installer on a modern version of windows, you should:
- Run the installer and browser as an administrator. Windows 9X does not have privilege levels and K-Meleon 1.5.x will read and write directly to the C drive.
- Run the browser in compatibility mode for Windows 98.
- On higher dpi monitors, set Windows to override the scaling for K-Meleon 1.5.

I believe Opera 10.60 scored 100/100 on Acid 3 testing.
Here’s an old comparison of Opera with IE and Firefox:

Я
Opera.
Настало время активного поиска. И по запросу «Modern browser for Windows 98», на форуме Ubuntu (!)
Adobe Flash Player:
Stay Tuned!
KernelEx does it yet again to modernize the Windows 98SE/ME platform. Thanks to jumper’s extension of the Windows 9x kernel API, more somewhat modern web browsing options are available for Windows 98SE/ME. Firefox 31.8 ESR may not be the newest or the flashiest, but will get basic browsing tasks done! A big thank you to schwups for this innovation!!
Features:
**Mozilla-based web browser
**Working address (URL) bar
**No delayed loading of web pages
**Working «Restore Previous Session», «Recently Closed Tabs» and «Recently Closed Windows»
**»browser.newtabpage.enabled» set to false for more stability
**No Tab artifacts
**QuickJava — Javascript, Style, Image Toggler (Version 2.0.6 in 35.0.1 and 2.0.5 in 31.8esr)

KernelEx — Updated by Jumper
**Does NOT require SSE2. This version of Firefox will run on Pentium 3 machines.
SET Xul.dll to Windows XP SP3 in KernelEx compatibility!!
