Windows Media Encoder is a discontinued freeware media encoder that allows you to convert and record both live and prerecorded audio and video. This tool encodes videos by using Windows Media Video versions 7, 8, or 10. Regarding audio, this application uses Windows Media Audio version 9.2 or version 10. Bear in mind that using version 10 requires special codecs to be installed. Windows Media Encoder supports two-pass encoding in order to enhance the quality of on-demand content. Another useful feature of this tool is the variable bitrate that can be used for high-motion sequences in order to ensure the highest quality.
This application supports scripted encoding with wmcmd.vbs VBScript file thus allowing users to encode a large number of media files. And also, you can create audio ranging from voice-only content to multichannel, and you can encode video from low data rate screen capture to HD quality (1080i/1080p). Compressed videos can be fine-tuned by using the new encoding modes. Windows Media Encoder’s advanced features are also available on older operating systems, like Windows XP and Windows 2000, so you don’t need to upgrade to the latest OS to create high-quality video content.
Some other advanced options of Windows Media Encoder that you may be interested in are its new codecs that improve output quality, the two new encoding modes (constant-bit-rate and variable-bit-rate) that allow you to adjust fine-tune settings, language support for specifying the language of your content, support for sourcing from additional file formats, and frame-level seeking. Windows Media Encoder is also available in an x64 edition, which includes the features of the 32-bit edition and some extra updates (the VC-1 video codec and the DRM Protect Utility). This Encoder was discontinued after 2011, It’s not developed after 2011, the update was stopped by Microsoft.

- First check and download the correct versions which is suitable for your PC.
- You can’t install the versions directly it will show an error like the below screenshot.
- To bypass that DirectX prompt, you first need to manually extract the contents of the WMEncoder64.exe file. To do this, you need to open command line prompt and type the following:
WMEncoder.exe /C /T:”C:\Extracted” NOTE: You can replace “C:\Extracted” with whatever path you want You will then see the following files: ADVPACK.DLL W95INF16.DLL W95INF32.DLL wmenc.inf WMEncoder64.msi wmencq.inf wmencqa.inf
- Then all you have to do is run the “WMEncoder64.msi” file and it will install to “C:\Program Files\Windows Media Components\”
NOTE: You may get an incomplete install error, but it will install. You will also see the “Windows Media” folder on the start menu with all the utilities there. Readers if you found any error while installing kindly mention the error in the comments.

Encode speed for single pass WMV 9 is comparable to TMpeg on Motion Estimate Search for MPEG2 at same resolution input/output and no resizing or filters.
Encode speed for 2 pass is longer (5-6x original movie time on my Athlon 1.33 GHz). However, when compared to TMpeg using resizing and SOME filters, WMV 9 encodes much faster than TMpeg doing MPEG2.
I’ve observed WMV file sizes 30-50% smaller than MPEG2 at comparable bitrates.
Visual quality of the video is noticeably better than MPEG2, even when using filters and highest quality in TMpeg.
On the downside, if you are familiar with MPEG2 encoding, there is a little bit of a learning curve to go into WMV9, but not too much.
On the downside, WMV 9 encoder defaults to a fairly SOFT image quality. Change this to sharp or sharper settings (75-85 or better) to get better image quality.
One preferential note: not as many processing controls as TMpeg, but these can be done using other apps like VirtualDub, TMpeg etc, prior to encoding. Besides, some people prefer this anyway.

The industry has changed and many switched to H.265 encoder software, but if you still want to use it, we’ll show you how to do that.

Does Windows Media Encoder work on Windows 10?
- This is a discontinued software, and as such, it has compatibility issues with Windows 10.
- After the removal of Windows Media DRM in Windows 10, the software is no longer fully compatible as of May 2017.
Download the software from a third-party source
- Download Windows Media Encoder. Be sure to select the version that matches your operating system.
- Find the WMEncoder file that you just downloaded and run it.
- Setup welcome screen will now show. Click Next.
- Read the License Agreement, select I accept the terms in the License Agreement and click Next.
- Select the installation folder and click Next.
- Click Install button to start the installation.
- Wait for the installation to complete.
- Once the install is completed, click Finish.
How can I use Windows Media Encoder?
Once the setup process is completed, you can start the application by clicking its shortcut.
Once you start the application, a New Session window will appear. From here you can choose between several predefined presets or you can create your own custom session.
If you choose to create your own session you can change a wide range of options including audio and video sources, output, compression rate, etc.
By choosing a certain preset, you’ll start a New Session Wizard. In our example we used Capture audio or video preset and the preset wizard allowed us to choose between different audio and video sources.

In addition, there’s an option to configure both audio and video source.
After selecting the source, we choose the destination directory.
After that you need to choose the method of distribution. By choosing any of these options the software will automatically use certain encoding settings.
In addition, there’s an option to change the quality and encoding settings.
Now you just need to enter relative information regarding your recording such as title, author name and description. Lastly, you just need to review your settings before you start recording.
To start recording just click the Start Encoding button.
During the recording session you’ll see all the necessary information such as remaining disk space, CPU load, etc.
Windows Media Encoder is perfect if you’re planning to broadcast content, and with a built-in screen recording feature this tool is great if you want to create a video tutorial.
In addition to Windows Media Encoder, there are two more applications available. First is Windows Media Stream Editor which allows you to add source files and mix and match audiences.
Next tool is Windows Media Profile Editor, and using this tool you can edit both audio and video profiles. After editing a certain profile, you can export it and create a completely new profile for you.
What replaced Windows Media Encoder?
Unfortunately, there’s no official replacement for Windows Media Encoder from Microsoft, and the company decided to focus on different tasks.
Your only option is to use third-party video compression software as an alternative.
As you can see, you might encounter some issues while running Windows Media Encoder software, so you might be better off considering an alternative.

Обновился до Win 10, в принципе всё работает, только окно видео (версия последняя) не прикрепляется к основной панели программы, т.е. если их двигать, то по отдельности. И бордюр окна какой-то не ровный — сверху толще, по остальным сторонам почти не виден. |

Под Windows 10 есть проблемы отображения видеоокна с бордюром. Как временное решение отключите «Окно с бордюром» в контекстном меню видеоокна. |

При переходе на Win10 никаких проблем обнаружено не было. Но запись не шла со старыми установками. Пришлось менять настройки записи. |

Вам повезло, что вы пользуетесь русской версией Win10. А мне с моей версией en-US не повезло. Вот здесь описывалась и обсуждалась проблема с кракозябрами, которая не возникает, если Win10 имеет русскоязычный интерфейс. Пришлось отказаться от BTV и использовать c Win10_en-US старый добрый DVBViewer. |

У меня при обновлении семерки на десятку при записи системным энкодером MPEG надпись «cannot create instance of microsoft mpeg encoder» Думал драйвер сырой, но раз у всех все работает, подскажите как исправить? Пробовал чистую семерку — системный кодек работает, на чистой десятке опять нет записи системным MPEG энкодером. Временно пользуюсь intervideo энкодером. Как подключить системный mpeg? ТЮНЕР Behold T8, драйвер и Behold tv последние с сайта, Win10pro 64. Повторюсь: как заставить записывать именно с системным mpeg, а не «как перейти на другой формат или пакет intervideo?»)) |

Да, я где-то встречал статью про отказ Microsoft от использования MPEG кодера, типа авторские права и т.п., просто BEHOLD TV говорит «системный кодек ОК!», дает настройки ему сделать, а запись не делает. В любом случае спасибо за разъяснения, по крайней мере определился, что драйвер РУКИ.sys исправен, ход за разработчиками. |
