Live Gaming On Windows Failed To Initialize is an error that comes up while playing Windows Live Gaming enable games. This error prevents the game from running and is a dedicated server error. The error can be seen while playing Halo 2 for Windows vista, Virtua tennis 4 and GTA 4. In this tutorial I will teach you how you can fix the error ‘Live Gaming On Windows Failed To Initialize’. This may be because another LIVE Gaming on Windows applications (such as the Halo 2 dedicated server) is running on the same machine. I will fix the error on Halo 2 game which I am running on Windows 7 64 bit. When I try to run Halo 2 on Windows 7 this error comes up.
How To Fix Live Gaming On Windows Failed To Initialize In Halo 2
- First of all install the game correctly.
- Install Windows Live. This step is optional, if you don’t want to sign up in Windows Live then don’t download it.
- Now go to the folder where the Halo 2 game is installed. The game can be found in the following directories.
C:\Program Files(x86)\Microsoft Games\Halo2
(For Windows 7 64 bit)
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Games\Halo2
(For Windows 7 32 bit)
- Now in Halo 2 folder find a file whose extension is ‘.CFG’. It would be named as ‘halo2.exe’ and has an extension of ‘.CFG’.
- Right click on this CFG file and open it with notepad.
- Find ‘enableCrossPlatformSystemLink’. You will see that it is configured to ‘true’.
- Replace ‘true’ with ‘false’. And save the file.
- Now launch the game with Halo2.exe launcher. You won’t get this error again.
The CFG file is a configuration file for Halo 2 which gives a dedicated server error when the cross platform system link property is set to true because it makes Windows think that the same game is running on it and on the dedicated server for Halo 2 at the same time.
You can fix the Live Gaming error for other games like Virtua Tennis 4, GTA 4 like I did for Halo 2. You can watch the video showing how to fix Live Gaming initialization failed in Halo 2 for Windows 7 and Windows 8. Now check this tutorial.

The ‘Live Gaming on Windows Failed to Initialize’ error appears immediately after Windows users attempt to launch Halo 2 or a different executable belonging to a game developed by a Microsoft game studio. This is a game-breaking issue that prevents affected users from playing the game (single-player or multi-player).
What’s causing ‘Live Gaming on Windows Failed to Initialize’ Error?
- Games for Windows app is missing – In most cases, this particular issue will appear if the GFW (Games for Windows) app is not installed. This app is required by older games developed by Microsoft studios in order to allow the game to access online features and connect to dedicated serves. In this case, you can resolve the issue by installing the GFW app manually.
- Secondary Logon service is disabled – The Secondary Logon service is absolutely essential for applications that use the Live Windows Gaming integration. This particular error will sometime get triggered if the service is forcefully disabled. If this scenario is applicable, you can fix the issue by setting the service to Manual from the Services screen.
- Game is incompatible with OS version – As it turns out, there are certain Windows versions that will trigger this error even if the GDW app is properly installed and the Secondary Logon service is enabled. In this case, you can resolve the issue by forcing the game executable to run in compatibility mode with Windows 7.
- Xbox Live service are down – According to affected users, it’s also possible that the problem occurs due to the fact that one or more critical Live services used by the game in question are down or undergoing maintenance. In this case, there is no other repair strategy other than to wait for the issue to be resolved by Microsoft’s engineers.
Method 1: Installing the Games for Windows app
As it turns out, in most cases, the issue occurs due to the fact that the GFW (Games for Windows) application is missing from the computer. Keep in mind that this application is required so the game can access online features and connect to dedicated servers.
On Windows 10, this functionality is installed by default, but if you’re on Windows 8.1 or Windows 7, you will need to install the latest Games for Windows client on your computer – but it will only work as long as you use an offline profile.
Here’s a quick guide on installing and using the Game for Windows application with an offline profile to avoid the ‘Live Gaming on Windows Failed to Initialize’ error on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1:
- Visit this link (here) and wait for the executable to be fully downloaded.
- Once the download is complete, double-click on the executable to open it. If you’re prompted by the UAC (User Account Control) window, click Yes to grant admin access.
- Wait patiently until the necessary prerequisites are downloaded.
Installing Games for Windows application - After the installation is complete, click on Launch to open up the Microsoft Games for Windows app.
Launching the Games for Windows app - Now that the Games for Windows app is open, leave it running in the background (No sign-in is needed).
- Launch Halo 2 or the game that was previously triggering the error code and see if the issue is now resolved.
If the same ‘Live Gaming on Windows Failed to Initialize’ error is still occurring, move down to the next method below.
Method 2: Enabling Secondary Logon
As it turns out, another potential issue with the potential of triggering the ‘Live Gaming on Windows Failed to Initialize’ error is an instance in which a service (Secondary Logon) critical to this operation is forcefully disabled.
Several affected users that found themselves in a similar situation have managed to resolve the issue and launch the game without the same error message after accessing the Services screen and modifying the status of the Secondary Logon service to Manual.
Here’s a quick guide on how to ensure that the Secondary Logon service is enabled:
Note: This method should be applicable regardless of the culprit that’s causing the problem.
- Press Windows key + R to open up a Run dialogue box. Next, type ‘services.cpl’ and press Enter to open up the Services window. In case you’re prompted by the User Account Control prompt, consent to the admin access by clicking Yes.
- Once you’re inside the Services window, move over to the right-hand side and scroll down through the list of services until you locate the Secondary Logon service. When you see it, right-click on it and choose Properties from the newly appeared context menu.
- Inside the Secondary Logon Properties screen, select the General tab from the horizontal menu at the top. Then, scroll down below and change the Startup type to Manual.
- Click Apply to save the changes, then restart your computer.
- Repeat the action that was previously causing the error message and see if the issue is now resolved.
If the same ‘Live Gaming on Windows Failed to Initialize’ error is still appearing, move down to the next potential fix below.
Method 3: Running game in compatibility mode
As it turns out, Windows 8.1 has an incompatibility issue that might contribute to the apparition of the ‘Live Gaming on Windows Failed to Initialize’ error. Several affected users have managed to get the issue resolved by forcing the game executable to run in compatibility mode with Windows 7.
Here’s a quick guide on doing this:
- Right-click on the game’s executable that’s causing the error and click on Properties from the context menu.
Accessing the Properties screen of the game’s executable - Once you’re inside Properties screen, use the menu at the top to select Compatibility.
- When you’re inside, go to the Compatibility mode section and check the box associated with Run this program compatibility mode for. After you do this, select Windows 7 from the list of available options and click on Apply to save the changes.
Using Compatibility mode with Windows 7 - Launch the game with this same executable and see if the issue is now resolved.
If you’re still encountering the same ‘Live Gaming on Windows Failed to Initialize’ error immediately after you double-click the executable, move down to the next potential fix below.
Method 4: Verifying the status of Xbox Live services
As it’s been reported by several affected users, this issue can also occur due to the fact that one or more Live services that are being used by the game that’s triggering the ‘Live Gaming on Windows Failed to Initialize’ error are currently down or undergoing maintenance.
If this scenario is applicable, you have no repair strategies other than to wait for the affected services to come back online before trying to restart the game.
To check on the status of the Xbox Live service, visit this link (here) and look for any warning signs associated with status service.
If you confirm that some Xbox services are currently experiencing problems, wait a few hours before trying to launch the game again.

На моем компьютере установлена Windows 7, так что при запуске игра выдавала ошибку: «LIVE Gaming on Windows failed to initialize. This may be because another LIVE Gaming on Windows application (such as the Halo 2 dedicated server) is running on the same machine. Otherwise, reinstalling the game may fix this problem».
Однако после успешного запуска я не мог начать игру без подключения к моему профилю на Games LIVE, который совпадает с профилем Xbox LIVE, так как программа не могла верифицировать ключ продукта несмотря на то, что этот ключ из коробки прекрасно сработал на этапе инстлляции и активации игры, выдавая ошибку «Can’t sign in because your product key is not valid».
I dont know what s wrong, but I get the error message saying «Live gaming for windows failed to Initialize»
I even tried restarting and running halo 2 but I get the same message.
Any idea what migth be wrong.
And I m running as an Administrator..

Like I said, it worked perfectly fine before. I don’t think that I’m going to give up on a good game that works just quite yet. Besides, I do play other great games, but I’d just like to play one that I know is good and for which I payed good money. =)

No, chances are the problem lies with the software itself. Just toss it some where and play something worth-while/that someone put effort into.

Of course I have the same problem as everyone else here, otherwise I wouldn’t be posting. I have tried every fix suggested here and nothing has worked. I used to play this game fine about two months ago, until my computer had a problem (smoke was involved). Now that it’s fixed and back up and running, I decided to try the 64-bit Vista version rather than the 32-bit version that I had previously been playing on. Is it possible that that is the source of my problem? I don’t see why or how this would cause the problem, but then again, you never know. The message itself is puzzling to me. «Live Gaming on Windows failed to initiate.» Is it just me, or does this sound like a problem originating on Microsoft’s end, rather than mine? I don’t know, but any further help with this problem would be greatly appreciated.
P.S. I did get new hardware for my computer after it was «busted», but it is only better hardware. So how could that cause any problems, right?

Help! I have a new computer, windows Vista, all the good stuff. The one thing I don’t have is internet access. I have provided all of the DLL files that the error messages have asked for. I have rebooted, restarted the computer, reinstalled the game, renamed catroot2 to catroot22, turned on cryptographic services, and have been looking everywhere for another possible fix. Im still getting the same fricking message — «Live failed to initialize» !!

Wow…. thats why. You’re running it on XP, LIVE doesn’t support XP. Theres a reason it’s called Halo 2 Vista. You to buy Vista in order to play on LIVE.[Edited on 12.03.2007 8:41 AM PST]

I FOUND THE FIX!! After talking with Microsoft for like a total of 5 hours We tried going to the Halo 2 main folder (my computer> Hard drive> Programs > Microsoft games> Halo2 and Made The halo 2 application file run as administrator ALLWAYS (see my other post on exactly step by step on how 2 do that). Now it works great. Anyhow the error is a really stupid administrative rights problem that has occurred with other programs (like skype) on Vista. Hope this helps! :)
WOAH!!! IT WORKS!!! I need more info’s: Are you running it on Vista or did you patch it for XP?
I’m running it on vista. And I found out that every time you close the Halo 2 Map editor and bring it up again, it won’t work. YOu have to reinstall it every time you close the map editor or restart your computer. It’s a pain, but it works, at least.

marioko did you read my post? Any how to get to the menu (and sometimes into the game) Install the Halo 2 Map Editor. Next right click the halo map editor and click properties. This should open up a new window. Inside the window on the top you should see 5 or so tabs that say «General» «Shortcut» «Compatibility», and other stuff. Click on the compatibility tab. There you should find some options to run it compatibility modes for earlier versions of Windows. Ignore them and go to the Privilege Level on the bottom of the window. There you should have a option to run the program as an administrator. You want this box checked. Next Click apply and close the window. Now open Halo 2 Map Editor and in the top right part of the window you have the option to run Halo 2.
At least now you can get into the main menu. Thats as far as i can go at the moment.

I have the same problem as all you guys, ok first of all the map editor thing WILL WORK IF you go to properties and tell it to run as admin every time. As for the game crashing i called Microsoft and told them about the original error (not the map editor one) and they tried some stuff but nothing worked. HOWEVER we did rename some stuff using command prompt and things like that and when i later tried the map editor way for the heck of it after doing a bunch of crap it worked. I played for over 4 hours but later windows crashed from an unrelated reason and apparently the changes that were made did not save so i once more can’t run it XD
