Если у администратора появляется задача развернуть актуальную серверную ОС от Microsoft (Windows Server 2022) на физический сервер HPE не самой актуальной линейки Gen9 (HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9), то возникает ощущение дежавю и задача принимает вид квеста. Привычный метод быстрого развёртывания драйверов и утилит поддержки оборудования с помощью инструмента HPE Smart Update из пакета Service Pack for ProLiant (SPP) здесь не сработает, так как последний SPP с поддержкой Gen9 ничего не знает о Windows Server 2022, а из последующих, более современных, версий SPP поддержка Gen9 уже выпилена. Поэтому в результате применения любого SPP на указанной связке ОС и модели сервера мы получим систему с парой утилит для управления Smart Array (SSA) и множеством неизвестных устройств в диспетчере устройств Windows. В этой заметке мы рассмотрим вариант решения этой проблемы путём ручного последовательного развёртывания определённых пакетов драйверов и утилит с учётом некоторых нюансов.

Обновление микрокода

Первое, что следует сделать, это провести обновление микрокода материнской платы сервера с помощью пакета Online ROM Flash Component for Windows x64 — HPE ProLiant DL380 Gen9/DL360 Gen9 (P89) Servers. Самую актуальную на данный момент времени версию этого пакета 3.30_09-21-2023 (5 Oct 2023) без действующего контракта поддержки HPE у нас не получится. Однако, мы можем скачать последнюю версию с закрытием критических уязвимостей — 2.96_05-17-2022 (26 May 2022). Установку обновления можно провести как непосредственно запуская пакет из Windows, так и через веб-интерфейс iLO, предварительно распаковав в архиваторе 7-zip файл *.flash из пакета *.exe.

Не менее важным, с точки зрения безопасности, является обновление микрокода контроллера iLO. Скачиваем и устанавливаем пакет Online ROM Flash Component for Windows — HPE Integrated Lights-Out 4. Последняя, актуальная на данный момент времени, версия 2.82 (2 Mar 2023).

Для лучшей стабильности работы дисковой подсистемы обновляем микрокод RAID-контроллера Smart Array (в нашем случае это контроллер P440ar). Скачиваем и устанавливаем пакет Online ROM Flash Component for Windows (x64) — Smart Array and Smart HBA H240ar, H240nr, H240, H241, H244br, P240nr, P244br, P246br, P440ar, P440, P441, P542D, P741m, P840, P840ar, and P841 последней версии 7.20 (15 Oct 2022).

Прочие обновления микрокода для такого оборудования как сетевые платы, адаптеры FC, контроллеры накопителей HDD/SSD являются также являются немаловажными, но будут варьироваться в зависимости от конфигурации каждого отдельно взятого сервера.

Установка драйверов

Пакет установки каждого драйвера по завершению установки будет сообщать нам о необходимости перезагрузки. Все перечисленные ниже драйверы можно установить друг за другом без промежуточных перезагрузок и выполнить одну перезагрузку сервера после установки последнего драйвера.

Скачиваем и устанавливаем актуальную версию драйверов чипсета материнской платы из пакета
HPE ProLiant Gen9 Chipset Identifier for Microsoft Windows Server 2016 and Microsoft Windows Server 2019 — 10.1.17969.8134(B) (21 Feb 2022). Это избавит нас от большей массы неизвестных устройств в диспетчере устройств Windows.

Для поддержки контроллера iLO4 последовательно скачаем и установим два пакета драйверов:

iLO 4 Channel Interface Driver for Windows Server 2016 and Server 2019 последней версии 4.1.0.0 (9 Sep 2019);
iLO 4 Management Controller Driver Package for Windows Server 2016 and Server 2019 последней версии 4.0.0.0(B) (2 Apr 2019).

RAID-контроллер Smart Array в только что установленной Windows Server 2022 будет работать на базе драйвера, встроенного в базовый комплект драйверов Windows. Однако для более корректной и производительной работы контроллера рекомендуется установить «родной» драйвер из пакета HPE ProLiant Smart Array HPCISSS3 Controller Driver for 64-bit Microsoft Windows Server 2012 R2/2016/2019 Editions последней версии 106.26.0.64(B) (5 Nov 2021).

Для поддержки встроенного в материнскую плату видеоадаптера установим пакет драйвера Matrox G200eH Video Controller Driver for Windows Server 2016 and Server 2019 последней версии
9.15.1.224 (9 Sep 2019).

Этого набора драйверов достаточно для того, чтобы в диспетчере устройств Windows не оставалось неизвестных устройств.

Компоненты управления и мониторинга

Для поддержки механизма безагентского мониторинга, в том числе и для корректности отображения инвентаризационной информации в iLO, установим пакет HPE ProLiant Agentless Management Service for HPE ProLiant Gen9 последней рекомендуемой версии 10.100.1.0 (30 Jan 2023).

Если нас интересуют расширенные возможности инвентаризации оборудования из сторонних систем управления/мониторинга, то в качестве опциальных компонент можно доустановить в Windows Server системную службу SNMP Service, а после этого скачать и развернуть агентов SNMP из пакета
HPE Insight Management Agents for Microsoft Windows Server x64 Editions. Последняя версия 11.1.0.0 (28 Apr 2021) не установится с исполняемого файла cp041529.exe в Windows Server 2022 и будет сообщать о неподдерживаемой ОС. Чтобы решить эту проблему, распакуем архиватором 7-zip исполняемый файл cp041529.exe и в каталоге распаковки откорректируем файл cp041529.xml. Почти в самом конце файла найдём секцию prerequisites\supported_operating_systems и добавим туда ОС Windows Server 2022, чтобы секция приняла следующий вид:

После этого снова можно предпринять попытку установки, но уже с помощью расположенного в каталоге распаковки инсталлятора cpqsetup.exe.

Когда агенты SNMP установлены, можем дополнительно установить актуальную версию пакета
HPE System Management Homepage 7.6.8.3 (5 Apr 2023), который даст нам возможность визуально оценивать состояние аппаратных компонент сервера непосредственно в среде Windows.

По завершению установки всех перечисленных выше пакетов и перезагрузки сервера можно провести «финальную шлифовку» путём развёртывание последней актуальной версии HPE Service Pack for ProLiant, из которого подтянется ряд обновлённых утилит, таких как Smart Storage Administrator и Lights-Out Online Configuration Utility.

ILO 4 version 2.44 is out according to HPE’s alerts but 7-zip tells me it won’t open the scexe file. Why can’t HP just provide a bin file?? So annoying.

I used to maintain my own list of firmware versions by simply mirroring from http://ftp.hp.com, but with the hp/hpe split it looks like http://ftp.hp.com isn’t updated anymore. Do you know of an automatable/scrapable way of grabbing the firmware urls?

iLO 2.53 came out in May.

Hi there! Seems a new HP iLO 4 version is out (2.53).

An ILO 2.53 is out. I learned of it through an HPE server product bulletin/update.

Also an ILO4 2.54 is out. Please be aware that this version does a callback with HPE to check your ILO advanced key. If you ‘borrowed’ your key from somewhere else, your key might be stripped and the ilo will be reset to factory defaults. All ILO usernames will be removed and the Administrator account will be reset to its defaults too.

Did anyone else notice this?

Will it be possible to downgrade, and re-add a borrowed key?

uploads fine and flashes fine, but when run the web applet after downloaded,

If you could house the Windows .exe versions of the firmware it would be very handy, not essential but handy

You can use .bin files extracted from linked archives on both Windows and Linux, so there is not really much point (there will be double amount of links)

Question: In my environment mostly have iLO2, if I update firmware via Ilo webpage, the server require reboot or only the ilo will reboot ? The servers are production and up 24/7. they can be update without having to restart the whole server (on the fly) ?

ILO2 2.33 doesn’t work with the c7000 OA with KVM firmware 4.xx. It gives error 0x4 when attempting to connect with the local KVM console. 2.32 works fine.

Tested with OA firmware 4.23 and 4.90 and BL460c G1, BL260 G5 and BL460 G6 blades using the latest blade firmware.

Can I update a Hpe ML10 Gen 9 with ILO3 to ILO4

Are you sure you have a Gen9? From the specs, the Gen9 doesn’t use an iLO, it uses some kind of Intel chipset management solution.

You don’t have to type «chmod 755», you can do «chmod +x» to only change the executable bit. This will prevent mishaps if you fat finger like I do.

Actually, you don’t need to chmod at all. It’s a shell script so ‘sh ./CP022551.scexe —unpack=/tmp/iLO3’ works as well.

Hi, i have an Micorserver Gen8 with the iLO 4 2.73, but i need the 2.74 firmware update file.

Current ILO5 Version is 2.42. The corresponding package is cp046458 which is currently only included in SPP 2020-10-04.

BUILD DATE: April 5, 2021
EFFECTIVE DATE: April 8, 2021

Did you notice that as part of the latest SPP for Gen10 a version 2.42 of the firmware for iLO 5 is included (cp046458.exe)?
The only way I can find to download the file is by downloading the SPP.

iLO 4 V 2.78 and iLO5 V 2.44 are already available.

I was having an issue updating ILO2 from v1.20 to the latest since it would not work via the browser. Tried so many version and would not work, then I was able to do it via command line since the server was running RHEL 6. In case you’re having the same issue, here is what I did.

Hello!! Thank you so much for all the work you have done getting and uploading the files. I wanted to know, I have a HP Proliant ML10 V2. I have searched the internet and noticed that V2 was able to update to ILO 4, but no matter what I keep getting a fail error when trying update to ILO 4. Also, I updated to 194 bin file and still can’t access my ILO 3 over all the latest browsers. I keep getting a ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH. Im hoping that HP will do another update or maybe if i can get updated to ILO 4 then I will be able to access it via the latest browsers. Anyway, thanks in advance.

Hi Keith, I’m able to use Internet Explorer (whatever version is there on a fully patched Win10) to connect to iLO3 on DL Gen7 servers, while all other browsers fail with same ERR_SSL_VERSION_OR_CIPHER_MISMATCH error you had.
BTW I’ve never heard of being able to do just firmware update to get to newer type of ILO (ILO2 to ILO3 or ILO3 to ILO4). I believe what they might mean was a hardware upgrade option, but tbh can’t recall seeing that either.
- You can enable FIPS mode on the ILO for those cipher mismatches to be gone.

I can’t seem to get my iLO5 2.63 .bin file to upload; always says it fails, sometimes with a verification error. I have downloaded a couple of times on different systems; just doesn’t seem to work. Do all the extracted files from the .EXE (this is from a Windows machine) need to be in the same folder as the ilo5_263.bin file? I wonder if there is anything missing or a step I am leaving out.

Do you have HP Integrity iLO2 MP firmware? Seems to be different from Proliant iLO2

OK, perhaps this may come handy to someone…

We still run Gen7 blades (ProLiant BL465c G7 [half height, Linux] and ProLiant BL685c G7 [full height, MS-Win]) that use System ROM A19 and A20, respectively. I tried to update the ROM to the latest, π-day (3/14/2018), release.

There is no SPP (Service Pack for ProLiant) any more, but the ROM component can be downloaded. The respective update files are ‘CPQA1903.46E’ and ‘CPQA2003.46E’ as extracted from ‘cp036027.exe’ and ‘cp035679.exe,’ but hose cannot be installed via iLO3. The ROMpaq for Gen7 (intructions for overcoming the ‘Drive is Write Protected: https://www.icare-recovery.com/howto/hp-usb-disk-format-tool-device-media-write-protected.html ) failed with ‘Illegal OpCode’ and a Red Screen of Death, but the ROMpaq for Gen8 just needed the two files (.46E) added to the di where another ‘.46E’ already was, and the update worked.

Recently ran into an issue with a new client, servers iLO firmware was ancient (ilo 5 1.40) and it can’t update directly to the latest (2.78).

luckily this site exists to get hold of 2.10 which then allowed me to jump up to the latest.

The easiest thing to do is to run the installer on the computer you want to control and follow the instructions. For system administrators with an Enterprise subscription, there’s a range of deployment options.
