Windows Media Player (or simply Media Player) is a video and audio player developed in UWP by Microsoft for Windows 11 and subsequently backported to Windows 10. It is the successor to Groove Music (previously Xbox Music), Microsoft Movies & TV, and the original Windows Media Player. It began rolling out to Windows 11 Insider channels in November 2021 and then to all users starting in January 2022.[2][3] It was later released to Windows 10 users in January 2023.[4]
The new version of Windows Media Player (or Media Player) now includes support for video files, as part of Groove Music’s rebranding from a music streaming service to a media player.[5] Other changes to the app include the album cover view being in fullscreen, and a refresh to the mini player.[6] Accessibility has also been optimized in this new version, with some improved keyboard shortcuts and hotkey support for keyboard users and with other assistive technologies.[7]
Some features from the original Windows Media Player were initially not included, such as DLNA local streaming and the ripping of CDs. Ripping was eventually reintroduced in July 2022 for Windows 11, supporting the AAC, WMA, FLAC, and ALAC formats.[8]

Прои́грыватель Windows Media (Windows Media Player, сокращённо WMP) — стандартный проигрыватель звуковых и видеофайлов для операционных систем семейства Windows. Версии Windows Media Player были также выпущены для Mac OS, macOS и Solaris, но развитие этих версий с тех пор было прекращено.
В дополнение к проигрывателю Windows Media Player включает в себя возможность копировать музыку с компакт-дисков без исправления ошибок и со смещением, записывать диски в Audio CD формате (тоже со смещением) или в виде дисков с данными с плей-листами, такие, как MP3 CD, синхронизировать файлы мультимедиа с цифровых плееров или других мобильных устройств, и позволяет пользователям покупать музыку из онлайновых музыкальных магазинов. Включает в свой состав библиотеку Windows Media Format.

Windows Media Player впервые появился в составе Internet Explorer 4 SP2 и Windows 98 Second Edition. Версии 9, 10, 11 имеют режим воспроизведения музыки с панели задач. В 12 версии этот режим отсутствует. Текущая версия Windows Media Player — 12, она выпущена в июле 2009 года и её можно было загрузить с сайта компании[4]. Она планировалась к включению в дистрибутив Windows 7, который поступил в продажу 22 октября 2009 года. Эта версия проигрывателя поддерживает H.264, Xvid и видео DivX, AAC и QuickTime.
В марте 2004 года Европейская комиссия оштрафовала Microsoft на 497 млн евро, а также обязала компанию создать для продажи в Европе версию Windows NT без Windows Media Player (Windows XP N)[5]. - AC3filter — фильтр, предназначенный для декодирования и обработки звука в реальном времени. Фильтр декодирует форматы аудио AC3/DTS, поддерживает многоканальный и/или цифровой (S/PDIF) выходы.
- Xiph.Org — DirectShow: Xiph’s OpenCodec для декодирования и обработки звука в формате FLAC (поддержка Ogg Vorbis/Speex/Theora).
- WMP Tag Plus — фильтр, интегрированный с проигрывателем Windows Media и библиотекой имеет поддержку тегов музыкальных форматов. Поддержка тегов FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, WavPack, Monkey’s Audio, Musepack и MPEG-4.
В составе Проигрывателя Windows Media реализован протокол MTP. Он задуман как альтернатива Mass Storage Device для подключения портативных устройств, таких как MP3-плееры. Для работы с данным протоколом необходима версия WMP минимум 10, иначе Windows XP не сможет распознать такое устройство.
При копировании со Звукового компакт-диска Проигрыватель Windows Media предлагал защитить треки защитой. Решение оставалось за пользователем. В дальнейшем, в Windows 10 поддержка этой защиты была удалена. Microsoft предложила пользователям ПО для удаления защиты с ранее самолично скопированных с дисков песен.

Windows Media Player 11 зачем он вопше нужен? да ещё такой акцен типа для ХР да на ХР работают куча отличнейших плееров , это просто гавносрань, кроме все он ещё и шпионит за просмотренными(и прослушаными) материалами и отсылает в неизвестном направлении через интурнэт)
Те кто пытался установить версию вмп не тем способом каким сказал ZeDD придеться удалять ВМП и устанавливать заново, но именно этим способом. При чем удалять нужно все компоненты… Почти то же касается ВМП 12, но там чуть иначе…
