Step 1: Download Windows Media Center

You can download Windows media Center by clicking on the following links. We have provided the links for both 32-bit and 64-bit software. You can also search them online. But, make sure that you scan the respective download with your anti-malware software.

Windows Media Center (64-bit)

Note:- If you don’t know whether your PC supports 64-bit or 32-bit software, you can check it by right-clicking the Start button and selecting the ‘System’ option. You’ll see the system type on the screen.

After identifying your system type, you can click the respective link to download the software.

Step 2: Install The Software

As the downloaded software arrives as a zipped folder, open it in WinRaR to extract the original file.

Note:- If your PC doesn’t have WinRaR in it, you can download it here (32-bit/64-bit).

Now, you can right-click on the downloaded file and choose “Extract here”.

extract files

It will extract a folder named “WMC64”. It’s recommended to place the folder to C drive. After, placing the folder, open WMC64 and right-click  “_TestRights.cmd” to and choose “Run As Administrator”.

wmc64 run as administrator

It will open the command prompt panel. You can close it.

Now right-click “Installer.cmd” and click “Run as Administrator”. It will install the program and at last, give an instruction to press any key to close the command prompt window.

Hence, Windows Media Center should be installed by now. If it’s not, it is possibly because your Operating system must have been upgraded from Windows 7/8/8.1 to Windows 10. Therefore, there are some traces of the old Windows Media Center that doesn’t allow to install the newer one. To mitigate the situation, right-click “Uninstaller.cmd” and choose “Run as an administrator”.

uninstaller.cmd run as administrator

Afterwards, repeat the process by running “_TestRights.cmd” followed by “Installer.cmd”. It will install Windows Media Center on your PC.

You can find it on the start menu or can search it in the search menu.

Step 3: launch Windows Media Center

Hence, you can launch the program and use it as you used it on Windows 7 or 8.

If you have any problems related to installation or operation of the software, you can refer to ‘Workarounds.txt’. You can find it in C Drive> WMC64>Worksaround.txt.

Windows Media Center is not part of Windows 10. None of the editions of Windows 10 ship with Windows Media Center or officially support installing Windows Media Center.

A lot of users who were not aware of the fact that WMC is not available in Windows 10 have upgraded their Windows 7/8.1 installations to Windows 10 and now missing the feature.

A little more about Windows Media Center

Windows Media Center was first introduced as a special edition of Windows XP back in 2002 and was named Windows XP Media Center Edition. Since then, it had been part of every version of the Windows operating system till Windows 8.

That said, as everyone knows, even in previous Windows versions, Windows Media Center was not available in all editions. In fact, Media Center was not part of Windows 8 as well, but Microsoft let Windows 8/8.1 Pro users purchase and install Media Center for a small fee.

Since Media Center is not available for Windows 10 and is not officially supported, the Media Center has been removed while upgrading your Windows 7/8.1 installation to Windows 10. That is, for instance, users who previously had Windows 7 Ultimate edition with all the goodies are not able to enjoy Windows Media Center in Windows 10.

Alternatives to WMC

Although WMC never became hugely popular (could be because it was not available in all editions), there are plenty of users who still find the program better than any other third-party media center program. The cool set of features, compatibility with devices, and easy-to-navigate UI made the program very popular among a section of PC users.

Sure, there are a couple of free alternatives out there for Windows Media Center, but everyone knows that none of them are even remotely close to Windows Media Center when it comes to ease of use. Among the alternatives out there, the free Kodi (previously known as XBMC) is probably the best media center software around in the absence of WMC.

Just like other classic Windows features, whenever Microsoft discontinues a feature or program, Windows enthusiasts and developers try their level best to bring the classic features to the newest version of Windows. In this case, some developers and Windows enthusiasts have managed to install and run Windows Media Center on Windows 10!

In order to successfully install and run Windows Media Center on your Windows 10 PC, you need to complete the given below instructions. And before you jump to the download page, please create a manual system restore point, so that you can easily revert to your current settings if Windows 10 or WMC fails to work.

The Uninstaller file is provided if you want to uninstall the WMC from Windows 10. Simply run it with admin rights to get rid of WMC from Windows 10.

Good luck!

Microsoft discontinued Windows Media Center in Windows 10, but it’s not stopping enthusiasts to manage and bring back the entertainment hub to the latest operating system. Originally, the software maker introduced Windows Media Center in Windows XP, and an updated version was released with Windows Vista. Windows 7 included the software, but without any changes, and on Windows 8, Microsoft continued offering Windows Media Center as an additional add-on, but again it was the same version originally released with Vista.

Windows 10 no longer includes Windows Media Center as the company is focusing on Xbox One as the central entertainment hub of the house. Although, the media hub wasn’t extremely popular, it still have a number of fans, and if you’re one of them, users at the MDL forums crafted a package to install Windows Media Center in the latest release of Windows 10, including the public and Insider preview.

This project has been in the works for a few weeks now, and Windows Blog Italia published a guide that allows you to install the entertainment software in your computer.

If you want to try it in your computer simply follow the steps below:

Warning: Before you modify anything, make sure you understand that this is something not supported by Microsoft and the installation files come from an unofficial source. As such, you will be proceeding at your own risk. It’s assumed, you know what you’re doing and you have created a full backup of your system before moving forward.

  1. Download and extract the zip file for Windows 10 (32-bit) or Windows 10 (64-bit) — Click the “Download through the browser” link.

  2. Extract the content from the zip file, right-click on _TestRights.cmd and click Run as administrator.

  3. Reboot your computer.

  4. Go back to the folder and right-click on Installer.cmd, run the installer as administrator, and after the install press any key to exit the installer.

    Windows Media Center installer

Now, you have completed the installation of Windows Media Center in Windows 10. If you can’t find the app, go to Start > All apps > Windows Accessories > Windows Media Center. From here, you can also right-click the app and pin it to the Start menu.

If you wan’t to remove it, simply go back to the folder with the installation files, right-click Uninstaller.cmd, run it as an administrator, and reboot your computer.

During the installation process that I have tried everything seems to be working well, but my computer configuration doesn’t allow me to see if I can play DVDs or setup the TV functionality. These are important features, but remember that Microsoft removed the codecs to play DVDs in Windows 10 to reduce licensing costs and the TV setup hasn’t change in years, so the experience might be different.
