Just thought I would start this off here first.
Has anyone got Civ3 working on windows 10. I have just upgraded from 8.1 and it no longer works. 10 keeps asking me to try running as administrator ,it makes no difference, tried their compatibility options no joy.

To answer the first reply, I have run Civ3 on every version since windows 98 without any problems so have had nothing much to say.
As for the second, not sure what you need , anyway its installed on the C drive of an Asus x550c laptop . What I did notice with 8.1, civ seemed to run as a virtual program. I don’t seem to be able to access any of these files now 10 is loaded, considering going back to 8.1 unless someone far cleverer than me can come up with a solution.
Also just found that civ2 no longer works.

Where on your C drive is it installed. If it’s under the Program Files (x86) folder that may be your problem. It’s better to have it installed in a separate location to avoid complications with Windows. I have mine installed on a separate HDD from my OS, but the main C drive would work as well.

Where on your C drive is it installed. If it’s under the Program Files (x86) folder that may be your problem. It’s better to have it installed in a separate location to avoid complications with Windows. I have mine installed on a separate HDD from my OS, but the main C drive would work as well.

This did not work for me on Windows 10 64-bit.

When I start the game, Steam shows me in-game for a second or two, then says I am no longer in-game. Nothing pops up.

Edit: My problem was fixable by having «KeepRes=1» and adding «Video Mode=x», where x is a horizontal resolution, into the conquests.ini file in «C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Sid Meier’s Civilization III Complete\Conquests\». This runs the game in a window, which makes it START! Getting a good resolution seem impossible, though.

Edit:Edit: I have Intel graphics, and whenever I use «KeepRes=1», it never starts. So, I can never have 1080p Civ 3…

Windows 10 removed a driver (SECDRV.SYS) which is required by the SafeDisc copy protection included in Civ3 and a lot of other games from that era. The game may include an old 32-bit unsigned version of that driver itself, but that can’t run on modern Windows versions.

I’m not sure if the Windows 8.1 version of that driver can be installed in Windows 10, but it is probably easier to get a version without copy protection instead. There is even an official one due to lots of people having problem with a Civ3 copy included in a German PC games magazine years ago.

The following site included a patch archive which includes No-CD versions of both the vanilla game and conquests. You should be able to just replace your existing Civilization3.exe and Civ3Conquests.exe (after making copies of your originals), it works without problems on English versions of the game.

Tried reloading Civ3 and Conquests on as separate partition using its own folder, no change, tried the downloads from the German site, but again no joy.
Civ edit does still work
Starting to get Civ withdrawal symptoms now so may return to 8.1, unless there is something else to try .

I didn’t read your question as malice-intended either. You get some really bizzare reactions when you post on forums I guess it’s because with the written word you can only interpret the voice of the writer by means of memory of real-life people that have spoken in the same way. I found your post amusing and light hearted, but some read it as coarse and insulting. I guess it’s similar to how I can’t read some posts as anything other than arrogant even when the writer might just be being normally conversational and why some people think any negative statement is representative of anger rather than a whole host of other intentions.

Not the last time I looked, no But now I think I should stop spamming this thread…

On topic, I am now slightly dreading starting up my newly acquired (and hitherto Win8.1) box. I opted for the upgrade a couple of weeks before the end of July, but have not fired it up again since the 29th (because we’re currently on holiday). So I may well be posting additional rants/pleas (or possibly even solutions, although that’s unlikely ) in this thread very soon…

To all those trying to run civ3 on Windows 10, I suggest you try using an emulator like virtual box to install Windows 7, 8, 8.1 or whatever and then use that to play civ 3. I haven’t tried this but there shouldn’t be a problem with this process.

    Just figured out this issue my self…. sadly it has to do with securom or other similar products not working in windows 10. (This is due to their inherent vulnerabilities and so while it sucks I applaud Microsoft’s choice to no longer support them.)

    The fix for it is to get a no-cd patch/crack from one of the various sources out there. I’m having to do this with a lot of my games.

    **Be advised** so far as I know this fix will ONLY work for those with the actual CDs for the game. Those with digital downloads from sites like Steam and others will have to find another work around. **

    Step 1: Make sure your game is updated to the latest version.

    Example: Civ III, Conquests is 1.22.

    Step 2: Go forth to google and do a search for No-cd patch Civ III.

    Step 3: Download the correct one for your updated game.

    Step 4: Replace existing .exe file with the new one.

    Step 5: Run the game in XP SP3 compatibility with 640 x 480 screen res, and run as administrator.

    Step 6: Play endless hours, cause its still a great game. (And I hate the releases that came after.)

Запуск от имени администратора, в режиме совместимости, в окне без рамок

Для начала попробуйте запустить игру от имени администратора. Если игра вышла ранее 2015 года, попробуйте запустить её в режиме совместимости с более старой версией windows, например windows 7 (для очень старых игр можно попробовать Windows XP SP3).

Правой кнопкой мыши по ярлыку игры → свойства → совместимость → ставим флажки «Запустить программу в режиме совместимости с…» и «Запускать эту программу от имени администратора».

Эти два действия очень часто решают проблему запуска и стабильного ФПС.

Если вы играете через Steam или другой лаунчер, попробуйте запускать игру через него (после того, как выполнили действия выше).

Так же часто помогает запустить игру в окне без рамок.

Отключение XMP профиля в Bios

  • Включите счетчик FPS в настройках Steam или установите любую другую программу для этого на свой вкус. Нам необходимо выйти на стабильные 60 кадров.
  • Для начала включите вертикальную синхронизацию
  • Вы так же можете поставить масштабирование DLSS (XeSS, FSR) на качество или на баланс (больше производительности, чуть хуже картинка), если у вас современная карта и игра поддерживает эти технологии
  • Если не помогло, попробуйте понизить все графические настройки до минимума, кроме разрешения экрана
  • После повышайте до тех пор, пока картинка остаётся комфортной. Если же понижение не помогло, остаётся только понижать разрешение.

В Sid Meier’s Civilization III (2001) нет звука. Ничего не слышно

Проверяем звук в настройках игры. Проверяем звук на самом ПК, например музыку в браузере. Если ничего нет:

  • проверьте уровень звука в windows (вашей ОС), возможно уровень звука установлен в 0
  • проверьте правильность подключения колонок, наушников
  • если устройство нестандартное, ему могут потребоваться свои драйвера от разработчика
  • возможно нет драйверов на звук в системе вообще (обновляем, смотри первый пункт)
  • в крайнем случае есть вероятность, что вышла из строя звуковая карта

Sid Meier’s Civilization III (2001) не видит мышь, клавиатуру или геймпад. Не работает управление

Первым делом перейдите в настройки игры и проверьте, переключено ли у вас устройство управления на геймпад (если проблема в нем). Плотно ли подключены провода? Работают ли устройства вне игры? Решением может быть проверка драйверов с помощью утилит (смотри первый пункт) или банальное отключение → подключение.

Если Sid Meier’s Civilization III (2001) выдает ошибку 0xc0000142, устранить проблему можно одним из способов, указанных ниже. Лучше всего пробуйте один за другим, пока проблема не решится.

  1. При загрузке игры отлючите все антивирусные программы.
  2. Проверьте путь к папке игры, все должно быть записано латинскими буквами (английскими). Например C:\Games\Game Folder.
  3. Имя пользователя Windows тоже должно быть указано латиницей. Нажмите Win+R → наберите команду netplwiz → выделите имя пользователя → Свойства.
  4. Зайти в свойства игры, кликнув правой кнопкой мыши по ярлыку. Совместимость → Режим совместимости  → Выберите режим совместимости отличный от вашей ОС → Поставьте галочку «Запускать от имени администратора«.

Если эти советы не помогли, значит надо искать проблему в стабильности работы ОС и в файлах игры.

  • С помощью Advanced SystemCare Free проведите стандартную очистку. 
  • Замените значение реестра: Поиск → Редактор Реестра → HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE → SOFTWARE → Microsoft → Windows NT → CurrentVersion → Windows → LoadAppInit_DLLs → в строке Значение замените 1 на 0. 
  • Проверьте компьютер на наличие вредоносных программ и вирусов. После проверки и чистки перезагрузите ПК и снова загрузите игру.
  • Проверьте, чтобы у вас были установленные все необходимые версии компонентов, а именно Microsoft Visual C++, DirectX, Драйвера (смотри пункты в начале).

    Скачал с интернета образ civilization 3. Она не запускалась, так как требовала оригинальный диск. Я скачал NOCD. Заменил оригинальный файл на NOCD и она перестала работать. Пишет мол ошибка, отправьте письмо какой-то бабушке. Это как-нибудь лечиться? Пробовал совместимость, не помогает.

    а вообще — запиши на болванку и играй без nocd.

  3. Это явно проблема конкретной версии — похожая и именно с этой игрой была у balakshin‘а (он писал об этом в теме про образ диска). Ему удалось решить её с помощью какого-то конкретного no-cd. Думаю, надо попросить у него этот файл.
    Ну, или пробовать другие no-cd — их наверняка как минимум несколько.

  6. Beckham, извини, но фраза «какой-то» в вопросе неприемлема. Надо обязательно указать, какой. И попробовать поискать его на каком-либо *.dll-хранилище.
    А заодно сообщить, в какой конкретно момент дополнение файл требует — при непосредственно запуске, попытке установки, в главном меню…

    Sergo15, большое тебе от меня человеческое спасибо. Пропатченная игра прекрасно запустилась без всяких аддонов, которые меня в восторг совсем не приводят.

    Прошу прощение, что поднял старую тему.
    Проблема такая: не так давно приобрёл ноутбук asus eeePC 904HD. Вспомнив про игруху Civilization 3, решил поставить. Но, как, может быть,
    многие помнят, игра требует разрешения 1024х768. Стандартное разрешение ноута 1024х600. Игра естественно не запускается. Прописывание KeepRes=1 в различных ini-файлах не помогает.
    Может быть, кто сталкивался, помогите пожалуйста заранее спасибо!

  13. не знаю как на счёт окна, но можно заставить работать в разрешении экрана. соответственно, если выставить разрешение экрана на 800х600. но это, видимо, не то, что тебе нужно.

    Оно и так переключается очень быстро и стабильно.

  17. Lithum, у тебя обычная Цива, без дополнений?
    ЕМНИП в Conquests (и возможно в обычной Циве) можно было в файле conquests.ini (или civilization.ini для обычной Цивы) вписать следующее:

    — игра запустится с разрешением рабочего стола. Сейчас попробовал на Conquests — нормально растянулась на 1280х1024, правда масштаб карты увеличивается и размер текста сильно уменьшается, соответственно ничерта не видно Прицепил скриншот для примера — это в 1280х1024.

    или

    — по идее игра должна пойти в 800х600

    Если вписать и KeepRes=1 и Video Mode=800, скорее всего будут какие-то артефакты или глюки.

    Если честно, все это пробывал, другое дело, что ничего из этого не работает! ((( у меня классическая цива, в файле civilization.ini все это добавлял, ничего это не дает! То есть совсем! У меня и так экран 1024, так что она просто запускается в 1024, и все. как ни правлю — ничего не меняется (((

  19. Lithum, похоже и не удастся запустить в разрешении ниже 1024х768, т.к. я сейчас в мануале прочитал следующее: «Video card compatible with DirectX 8.0a and capable of at least 1024×768 resolution and 16-bit color depth»
