How To Install and Play DOOM on Windows 10 in Hi-Resolution

Introduction

In continuing with retro gaming we now will cover one of the games that started it all with DOOM. We will be installing DOOM on Windows 10 in Hi-Resolution. For this to work you will need to have a registered or purchased version of DOOM, the shareware version will not work. Head over to GOG.com and get a copy for a great price. I recommend Ultimate DOOM.

Installation

There are several pieces you will need to download.

  • GZDoom which you can download from https://zdoom.org/downloads. Select Windows 64 bit version 4.1.2 is latest as of this post.
  • Hoover1979 UltraHD Doom Texture Pack from Moddb. This is a big download and is a RAR file. You can extract the RAR file with 7-Zip if you do not have one.

Install GZDoom

Installation of GZDoom is straight forward. Just unzip the gzdoom-bin-4-1-2b-x64.zip to a directory and you are done.

Install DOOM

Follow normal installation process for DOOM. If you have purchased the GOG version then just install following normal process. After installation is completed just copy the DOOM.WAD file to the extracted GZDoom folder.

At this point you can just double-click on gzdoom.exe and start playing DOOM, but now lets add the Hi-Resolution Textures.

Extracting Hoover1979 UltraHD Doom Texture Pack

Use 7-Zip or winrar and extract the RAR file. Once the extraction is done just copy the contents to the GZDoom folder.

Playing in Hi-Res

The Hoover1979 UltraHD Doom Texture Pack includes batch files (bat) that you just double click on for Doom or Doom 2 to run. in the case of DOOM double click on Doom – UltraHD Texture Pack.bat and let the games begin.

Happy Retro Gaming!!

For help running Doom on other operating systems, see How to download and run Doom.

Playing Doom under Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, or Windows 10 can be troublesome. All games based on the Doom engine originally ran under MS-DOS. Modern Windows versions have only limited support for DOS, and the Doom games and other Doom engine games may run poorly or have other issues (sound support is especially affected). 64-bit versions of Windows do not support 16-bit executables or games.

Recent commercial versions of Doom (such as the Collector’s Edition) include Doom95, the original commercial Windows port of Doom. However, even this does not play correctly because of modern Windows compatibility issues and bugs in the port itself (see this page for detailed information).

Source ports[]

By far the most effective solution is to use a source port. Many source ports exist which are derived from the Doom source code, Heretic source code or Hexen source code. These are further developed and much better supported than the official game engine versions released by id Software and Raven Software.

For playing Doom with the same feel of the original engine (capped framerate, limited screen resolution and so on), Chocolate Doom exists. However, there are other source ports which come with a variety of new features along with lots of bug fixes and almost complete removal of the engine limitations. The most popular of them are:

  • Doomsday
  • Eternity Engine
  • GZDoom
  • PrBoom+
  • ReMooD
  • Risen3D
  • Vavoom
  • ZDoom

And if you want to play multiplayer games on the Internet, you should also try:

  • Odamex
  • Skulltag
  • ZDaemon
  • Zandronum

Setting up a source port[]

For choosing a source port, one should check the official website for more detailed information and support. Not all source ports are compatible with all operating systems (although all ports mentioned above support Windows) and most source ports specialize in certain types of functionality and features. For a more detailed overview on source ports, see comparison of Doom source ports.

To setup a source port, first install the game as normal. Then go the source port’s web site, download the source port’s Windows version (usually stored in a ZIP archive), and extract the archive into the location where the game was installed. Running the source port executable (e.g. the file named prboom.exe for PrBoom, zdoom.exe for ZDoom and so on) should then start the game.

Emulation[]

Using console versions of Doom whose ROM images are dumped into a file for game system emulators is another way to play Doom on Windows. Although this is not legal if you do not dump the image yourself (and even then of questionable legality and depends on the country, and if there are anti-copy protection measures in place[1]), downloading a ROM off the Internet is copyright infringement regardless if you own the game or not. Due to the cost of a cartridge dumping tool, CD versions are the easiest to emulate legally or illegaly depending on national laws such as the Playstation or Saturn versions.) Devices used for backup copy-protected material maybe illegal devices or legal devices used in an illegal manner (always check local national laws).[2]

Other solutions[]

  • Use DOSBox to run the original DOS game executable (e.g. doom.exe for Doom, doom2.exe for Doom II, etc.). Poor performance can be improved by increasing the «cycles» parameter in the DOSBox configuration file. If you have difficulties setting up the program, you can try a user-friendly front-end such as D-Fend Reloaded.
  • You could even set up a whole emulated PC e.g. with VirtualBox and install MS-DOS, DR-DOS, FreeDOS or Windows 9x there; this might look like «breaking flies on a wheel», though — DOSBox should be much faster in emulating, if it is compatible enough.
  • SoundFX 2000 allows sound support for DOS games under Windows XP.
  • VDMSound does the same as the above.
  • Run the original DOS Doom, Heretic and Hexen executables without sound: either use the -nosound command line argument or set snd_sfxdevice and snd_musicdevice to zero in the game configuration file.
    • It is possible to run with music but no sound effects: In setup, select General MIDI (not Sound Blaster), with 0x300 as the address. Sound effects should be turned off. This gives a configuration with music; however, even in this configuration the music may not play properly.
  • It is possible to play Doom in Windows XP without using DOSBox since XP still has steady DOS support. Playing Doom in Windows 7 or Windows 8 will only give an error after the DOS screen starts up on a window, preparing all modules needed for running, but instead pops up a dialog saying that Doom can’t run on fullscreen. The error will keep popping up until you choose to terminate the program. 64-bit versions of Windows 7 or Windows 8 do not support 16-bit executables, they will instead give an error that the executable is not compatible with the version of Windows you’re running. Same thing as in Windows 8. But simpler error message saying this app can’t run on your PC. Attempting to run Doom on Windows 7 or Windows 8 through the Command Prompt will result in «Unsupported 16-bit Application» error.
    • It is possible to run the original DOS version of Doom under Windows Vista and 7 32-bit, by using XDDM video drivers instead of WDDM.
  • Doom at MS-DOS GAMES is an online emulator using dosbox web version.

Quick & easy solution[]

If the above text confuses you or if you are unsure which source port you want to use, you can follow the instructions below to get to play Doom as quickly and easily as possible:

  • First install your Doom game normally to a folder of your choosing. If you do not have any of the Doom games, you can download the free shareware episode here.
    • If you downloaded the shareware episode, you should now have a file called doom95.zip. Right-click on the file and extract its contents into a folder, e.g. Doom95
  • Download latest Chocolate Doom version here.
  • Right-click on the Chocolate Doom archive and extract its files into the same folder as the shareware episode or where you installed the full game.
  • Open the folder and start chocolate-doom.exe, which should launch the game.
    • If you want to configure sound, keys or other features, open chocolate-setup.exe instead.

If you do not have the full Doom games and wish to purchase them, look here for further instructions.

Playing Doom on the Windows XP, Vista, 7, 8, 10, and 11 operating systems can be problematic. Games based on the Doom engine originally ran under DOS. Modern Microsoft Windows versions have limited to no support for DOS programs, and the Doom and other Doom engine games may run poorly, have serious issues (sound support is especially affected), or not run at all, especially if the system is 64-bit.

Some previous commercial versions of Doom (such as the Collector’s Edition) include Doom95, the original commercial Windows port of Doom. However, even this does not play correctly because of modern Windows compatibility issues and bugs in the port itself (see this page for detailed information).

Official versions[edit]

Various official versions of Doom are now available from id Software through Bethesda.net, GOG, and Valve’s Steam platform. Some of the versions of the game available utilize DOSBox to run the original executables (see below for more details), while others have ported the game engine so that it runs natively under the host operating system. The latter is true of Doom 3: BFG Edition, which includes the original Doom and Doom II (with slight modifications) along with Doom 3 and its expansion packs all in one package.

As of 2019, the official Doom Classic Unity port port has been made available on Windows. This is a modern port supporting play of all the original Doom games on Windows 7 and later.

As of January 2024, it is no longer possible to execute the Steam client or install Steam games on versions of Windows older than Windows 10. However, it is still possible to use a newer version to install the DOS versions of the games and then copy the game files to an older PC, as they are capable of being used without the Steam client.

As of August 2024, Doom + Doom II has replaced the Unity port on Windows store-fronts.

By far the most effective solution is to use a source port. Many source ports exist which are derived from the Doom source code, Heretic source code and Hexen source code. Setting up a source port[edit]

For choosing a source port, one should check the official website for more detailed information and support. Most source ports specialize in certain types of functionality and features. For a more detailed overview on source ports, see comparison of Doom source ports.

To set up a source port, first install the game as normal. Then go the source port’s web site, download the source port’s Windows version (usually stored in a Zip file), and extract the archive into the location where the game was installed. Running the source port executable (e.g. the file named prboom-plus.exe for PrBoom+, zdoom.exe for ZDoom and so on) should then start the game.

Many source ports, including Chocolate Doom and ZDoom, can detect the GOG.com or Steam installation paths for the official versions of the game, and will automatically play them without requiring any copying of the IWAD files.

Emulation[edit]

Using console versions of Doom whose ROM images are dumped into a file for game system emulators is another way to play Doom on Windows, but is not legal unless the player owns the original cartridge or disc, and has made a local backup copy.

Some source ports also exist which modernize this experience as well, including the following:

  • Calico for playing the Jaguar version of Doom
  • Doom 64 EX for playing Doom 64

Other solutions[edit]

  • Use DOSBox to run the original DOS game executable (e.g. doom.exe for Doom, doom2.exe for Doom II, etc.). Poor performance can be improved by increasing the «cycles» parameter in the DOSBox configuration file. If you have difficulties setting up the program, you can try a user-friendly front-end such as D-Fend Reloaded.
  • It is also possible to set up an emulated PC, for example with VirtualBox, and install MS-DOS, DR-DOS, FreeDOS or Windows 9x inside it. DOSBox is often more accurate in its emulation than some of these solutions, but may not run as fast depending on the availability of technologies such as X86 virtualization.
  • SoundFX 2000 allows sound support for DOS games under Windows XP.
  • VDMSound does the same as the above.
  • On 32-bit versions of the Windows operating system, it may be possible to simply run the original DOS Doom, Heretic and Hexen executables without sound: either use the -nosound parameter or set snd_sfxdevice and snd_musicdevice to zero in the game configuration file.
    • It is possible to run with music but no sound effects: In setup, select General MIDI (not Sound Blaster), with 0x300 as the address. Sound effects should be turned off. This gives a configuration with music; however, even in this configuration the music may not play properly.

John Romero, the original developer of the cult shooter game Doom, has come with a mega-mod for Doom 1. The mod is named Sigil and when you play the game with Sigil mod, you will understand the significance of it being called Sigil. This new mod is so extensive and detailed that John Romero is calling it a mega-wad. A wad file is used for storing the game levels of Doom, for example, Doom 1 came with “doom.wad” and Doom 2 came with “doom2.wad”.

In order to play Sigil mod for Doom in your Windows 10 PC, you will need these:

  1. Full version of Doom 1 (1993) or Ultimate Doom (1995). Shareware version won’t work. You can buy Ultimate Doom from GoG at https://www.gog.com/game/the_ultimate_doom.
  2. GZDoom port of Doom which can be downloaded for free from https://zdoom.org/downloads. This is needed because original “doom.exe” won’t run on new versions of Windows.
  3. Sigil mod obviously. You can get the free version from https://www.romerogames.ie/si6il. You can also order Sigil mod with Buckethead soundtrack from the same page.

Sigil Mod for Doom

After you have acquired all three things, follow these instructions:

  1. Extract the contents of the downloaded GZDoom zip file (in my case, gzdoom-bin-4-1-2b-x64.zip) to a folder, for example, C:\GZDoom.
  2. Extract the doom.wad file from Doom 1 installation folder to the same folder as in step 1.
  3. Extract sigil.wad file from downloaded sigil mega-wad zip file.
  4. Now select sigil.wad, drag it and drop on gzdoom.exe. You should be running Doom with Sigil mode now.
    Sigil Mod for Doom

The new mod is is very gory and is only for the hardcore fans of this cult classic game. The game begins with the protagonist in the midst of a red room as demons shoot at him from above. To open new pathways, the player has to shoot at the sigils drawn on the walls. Even at the easiest level, I found it very difficult to finish the level. But perhaps more advanced gamers will go through Sigil in a few minutes.

Almost all of the information here came from the Doom 64 EX website but it can’t hurt to have a mirror just in case it gets shut down or something.

Files

These might be out of date by now. My copies were downloaded on 09/18/2018 and are not kept up to date. Check the Doom 64 EX downloads page for up to date versions.

  • Doom 64 – official site | mirror
  • SDL Fix (win 10) – official site | mirror
  • You’ll also need a Doom 64 rom. I don’t have a download link for this but it’s pretty easy to find on Google. Choose the download site at your own risk.

Setup

Extract doom64ex_2.5_win32.zip.
Open WadGen.exe
WadGen will ask for the location of the Doom 64 rom. Select the Doom 64 rom (Doom 64 (U) [!].z64 in this picture, yours may have a different filename) and click Open.
WadGen will not open .zip files. You will need to extract the rom if you downloaded it in .zip format.

WadGen will create DOOM64.WAD and DOOMSND.SF2 from the rom

Open Launcher.exe, change any settings needed and click Launch or you can run DOOM64.EXE if you don’t need to change any settings.

If you’re running Windows 10 and have mouse issues extract doom64ex_sdl_fix.zip then copy SDL.dll and SDL_net.dll to your Doom 64 install folder.

Tip: You’ll want to check for secrets along the way. I didn’t my first time playing and it made the end boss a huge pain in the ass.
