Windows 11 change PIN password

On Windows 11, when creating a new account, you are required to create a PIN that you can use as a password to sign in to your account.

However, your account gets compromised, or you want an easier set of numbers to punch in to sign in, it’s possible to change the Windows Hello PIN to something different using the Settings app. If you forgot your PIN or it stops working, it’s also possible to reset it.

In this guide, you will learn the steps to change the login PIN to something different on Windows 11.

To change the account’s PIN password on Windows 11, use these steps:

Open Settings.
Click on Accounts.
Click the Sign-in options tab.
Click the PIN (Windows Hello) setting.
Click the Change PIN button.

Confirm the account’s current PIN.
Create the new PIN.

Once you complete the steps, the new PIN will apply to your Windows 11 account. You can test it by signing out and signing in back in.

Reset Windows Hello PIN on Windows 11

If you forgot your PIN or stopped working, you can reset the PIN. However, you should only use this option as the last resort since this process will require you to sign in again, and data that is managed by your organization might be lost.

To reset your account PIN on Windows 11, use these steps:

Open Settings.
Click on Accounts.
Click the Sign-in options tab.
Click the PIN (Windows Hello) setting.
Click the I forgot my PIN option.

Click the Continue button.
Sign in with your Microsoft account.

Create the new PIN.

Click the OK button.

After you complete the steps, the PIN will be reset, and you will need to sign in again.

Операционная система будет регулярно вам предлагать его установить. Даже во время инсталляции «десятка» не упустит возможность сделать такое «заманчивое» предложение. И если вы согласитесь, то при каждом запуске компьютера вам придется вводить секретную комбинацию. Это не очень удобно.

Хотя мы не являемся сторонниками незащищенных паролем операционных систем, всё же допускаем, что для некоторых юзеров это более комфортные условия пользования. Поэтому рассказываем несколько способов, как отключить ПИН-код на Windows 10.

Изменяем PIN-код через учетные записи пользователей

Нажмите комбинацию клавиш Win + R и в появившемся поле введите команду netplwiz. Нажатием клавиши Enter подтвердите операцию.
Откроется окно, в котором вы увидите все учетные записи, имеющиеся на компьютере. Здесь же можно создать новых пользователей компьютера или удалить старых.

Для каждой учетной записи можно включить или отключить ПИН-код если воспользоваться пунктом «требовать ввод имени пользователя и пароля» в верхней части окна. Также если нажать комбинацию клавиш CTRL + ALT + DEL, откроется меню, в котором нужно выбрать пункт «изменить пароль». Стоит отметить, что для установки нового пароля требуется знать текущий пароль.

Не обязательно полностью избавляться от защиты операционной системы. Можно,например, удалить пароль для гостевых аккаунтов, а для администратора, который обладает повышенным уровнем доступа, наоборот, оставить.

Доступ через редактор реестра

Нажмите комбинацию клавиш Win + R и введите команду regedit. В левой части окна проследуйте по адресу: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\ Software\ Microsoft\ Windows NT\ CurrentVersion\ Winlogon. Здесь требуется создать строковый параметр с именем DefaultPassword и прописать пароль в виде значения.

Параметр DefaultDomainName должен соответствовать имени локального компьютера. А для параметра AutoAdminLogon требуется задать значение 1. После внесения всех изменений нужно перезагрузить компьютер, чтобы всё заработало.

Как на Windows 10 сменить ПИН-код на другой способ входа

Не обязательно осуществлять вход в операционную систему с помощью классического многозначного пароля. Это устаревший метод. Современная Windows 10 предлагает пользователю различные варианты, включая распознавание лиц. Чтобы воспользоваться данным функционалом, нам потребуется открыть «Мой компьютер» и в верхней части окна зайти в «Параметры». Затем перейдите в раздел «Учетные записи» и, наконец, в меню «Варианты входа».

Здесь на ваш вкус будет предложено 6 вариантов: распознавание лиц Windows Hello, распознавание отпечатков пальцев Windows Hello, ПИН-код для Windows Hello, ключ безопасности, пароль и графический пароль. Можно выбирать любой, какой понравится. Также здесь можно осуществить настройку динамической блокировки, в результате которой ОС будет блокировать связанные с Windows 10 устройства, когда они выйдут за пределы допустимого диапазона. Теперь вы знаете, как на Windows 10 поставить не только ПИН-код, но и осуществить вход другими способами.

Windows 10 offers various ways to logon to your device. All of them have their pro’s and con’s. One thing is for sure, Microsoft loves the Windows Hello PIN. Even on an Active Directory Domain joined system – if you want to e.g. set up a Finger-Print login, you will be forced to generate a Windows Hello PIN, at least by default.

Funnily it can happen that you don’t even have the option to reset the PIN. What if the user forgot his PIN? No big deal? Well… it actually is a big deal. By default Windows goes back to the PIN if the Finger-Print reader does not work, what is especially common with the Microsoft Surface Keyboards, sure you can rip them off and re-attach to make it work again, but still your user-base / employee-base will say it asks for a PIN and I forgot it..

Fingerprints and PINs are stored locally on the device, in a secured vault. You can’t really alter it, but you can remove it.

In order to remove all locally stored PINs and possibly even Finger-Prints, you must delete all contents of %windir%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC.

The quickest way to accomplish this is using the two following commands in an elevated Command Prompt / CMD (run as administrator).

takeown /f %windir%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC /r /d y

icacls %windir%\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC /grant administrators:F /t

The first one will take ownership of the folder, the second one then will grant administrators rights to it.

Once this is done, you need to delete all contents of the folder. If you are logged on as an administrator you can just use Windows Explorer. If you are logged on as a regular user, you need to do it either more manual in CMD or use e.g. a tool like 7-zip in elevated mode and navigate to the folder, be aware that 7-zip might not be able to handle %windir%, either navigate manually to the folder or use C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local\Microsoft\NGC to get to the path. Delete all contents.

Reboot.

This sledgehammer method will delete all stored PINs and other information for all accounts known by the device. They will need to logon with their Active Directory password and start from scratch. You might also need to click on e.g. REMOVE in the Finger-Print configuration to start over.

This tutorial will show you how to reset the PIN for your account in Windows 11.

Windows Hello is a more personal, more secure way to get instant access to your Windows 11 devices using a PIN, facial recognition, or fingerprint. You’ll need to set up a PIN as part of setting up fingerprint or facial recognition sign-in, but you can also sign in with just your PIN.

These options help make it easier and safer to sign into your PC because your PIN is only associated with one device and it’s backed up for recovery with your Microsoft account.

How is a PIN different from (and better than) a password? On the surface, a PIN looks much like a password. A PIN can be a set of numbers, but enterprise policy might allow complex PINs that include special characters and letters, both upper-case and lower-case. Something like t758A! could be an account password or a complex Hello PIN. It isn’t the structure of a PIN (length, complexity) that makes it better than a password, it’s how it works.

PIN is tied to the device
One important difference between a password and a Hello PIN is that the PIN is tied to the specific device on which it was set up. That PIN is useless to anyone without that specific hardware. Someone who steals your password can sign in to your account from anywhere, but if they steal your PIN, they’d have to steal your physical device too!

Even you can’t use that PIN anywhere except on that specific device. If you want to sign in on multiple devices, you have to set up Hello on each device.
PIN is local to the device
A password is transmitted to the server — it can be intercepted in transmission or stolen from a server. A PIN is local to the device — it isn’t transmitted anywhere and it isn’t stored on the server. When the PIN is created, it establishes a trusted relationship with the identity provider and creates an asymmetric key pair that is used for authentication. When you enter your PIN, it unlocks the authentication key and uses the key to sign the request that is sent to the authenticating server.
PIN is backed by hardware
The Hello PIN is backed by a Trusted Platform Module (TPM) chip, which is a secure crypto-processor that is designed to carry out cryptographic operations. The chip includes multiple physical security mechanisms to make it tamper resistant, and malicious software is unable to tamper with the security functions of the TPM. All Windows 10 Mobile phones and many modern laptops have TPM.

User key material is generated and available within the Trusted Platform Module (TPM) of the user device, which protects it from attackers who want to capture the key material and reuse it. Because Hello uses asymmetric key pairs, users credentials can’t be stolen in cases where the identity provider or websites the user accesses have been compromised.

The TPM protects against a variety of known and potential attacks, including PIN brute-force attacks. After too many incorrect guesses, the device is locked.
PIN can be complex
The Windows Hello for Business PIN is subject to the same set of IT management policies as a password, such as complexity, length, expiration, and history. Although we generally think of a PIN as a simple four-digit code, administrators can set policies for managed devices to require a PIN complexity similar to a password. You can require or block: special characters, uppercase characters, lowercase characters, and digits.
What if someone steals the laptop or phone?
To compromise a Windows Hello credential that TPM protects, an attacker must have access to the physical device, and then must find a way to spoof the user’s biometrics or guess his or her PIN—and all of this must be done before TPM anti-hammering protection locks the device. You can provide additional protection for laptops that don’t have TPM by enabling BitLocker and setting a policy to limit failed sign-ins.
Why do you need a PIN to use biometrics?
Windows Hello enables biometric sign-in for Windows 11: fingerprint, iris, or facial recognition. When you set up Windows Hello, you’re asked to create a PIN first. This PIN enables you to sign in using the PIN when you can’t use your preferred biometric because of an injury or because the sensor is unavailable or not working properly.

If you only had a biometric sign-in configured and, for any reason, were unable to use that method to sign in, you would have to sign in using your account and password, which doesn’t provide you the same level of protection as Hello.

If you forgot your PIN, you can reset the PIN if you know your account’s password.

1 Open Settings (Win+I).

2 Click/tap on Accounts on the left side, and click/tap on Sign-in options on the right side. (see screenshot below)

3 Under Ways to sign in, click/tap on PIN (Windows Hello) to expand it open. (see screenshot below step 4)

4 Click/tap on the I forgot my PIN link. (see screenshot below)

5 Click/tap on Continue to confirm. (see screenshot below)

6 Enter your account’s password (not PIN) to verify, and click/tap on Sign in (Microsoft account) or OK (local account). (see screenshots below)

7 Enter a minimum 4 digit PIN number you want for your account, and click/tap on OK. (see screenshots below)

You can check Include letters and symbols to see PIN requirements and be able to use letters and symbols for your PIN.

8 You can now close Settings if you like.

OPTION TWO

Reset PIN for your Account on Sign-in Screen

This option is only available for a Microsoft account.

1 While on the Sign-in screen with the PIN sign-in option selected, click/tap on the I forgot my PIN link. (see screenshot below)

2 Type your account’s password (not PIN), and click/tap on Sign in. (see screenshot below)

3 If you have two-step verification turned on for your Microsoft account, you will need to select how you would like to get a security code. Enter the required information, and click/tap on Send code. (see screenshots below)
