Problem
Dataloy VMS crashes randomly on Windows 7/Windows Server 2008, but especially during startup or when when opening the Dataloy Distance Table (DDT) module. The error tends to happen mainly in ieEmbed.exe or rtutils.dll. What causes it and how can this be prevented/fixed?
Solution
If DEP (Data Execution Protection) in Windows is enabled, it will interfere with Java Garbage Collection if starting during a call to native code. These calls can typically happen when getting a network connection and when opening the browser module. To prevent the issue java.exe, javaw.exe and javaws.exe must be excluded from the DEP.
To exclude java.exe, javaw.exe and javaws.exe from DEP:
- Click Start on your PC.
- Locate and right-click Computer.
- Select Properties.
- In the Properties field select Advanced Systems Settings.
- Go to Performance and click Settings.
- Select the Data Execution Prevention tab.
-
Click Add…
-
Add one at a time the files:
Note: File location: Java Installation Directory (may sometimes be located in WINDOWS/SYSTEM32).jave.exe javaw.exe javaws.exe
- Click OK.

How to completely disable DEP in Windows Server 2003
March 19, 2009 — Julie
To completely disable DEP in Windows Server 2003, perform the following with administrative credentials:
1. Open Windows Explorer
2. Tools > Folder Options > View
3. Uncheck Hide Protected operating system files (Recommended) and Hide extensions for known file types
4. Click apply > OK
5. Browse to C:\
6. Right click on boot.ini, select properties and ensure the “read-only” tab is unchecked and click OK
7. Edit boot.ini
8. Modify the /noexecute=
For example, set /noexecute=AlwaysOff to disasble DEP entirely
9. File > Save, close boot.ini file
10. Right click on boot.ini, select properties and ensure the “read-only” tab is checked and click OK
11. Reboot the computer
Although DEP (Data Executive Prevention) exist for a good reason but there might be time where you need to disable DEP for some good reasons as well (e.g. to perform troubleshooting).
Prior to Windows Vista, you can edit the “boot.ini” through the “Startup and Recovery” window by click on the “Edit” button to enable or disable DEP.
However, you can’t do the same thing for Vista and beyond.
For Windows Vista and beyond (e.g. Windows 7, Windows 2008), you will need to use the BCDEdit command to set the option in the Windows boot configuration data store (BCD).
You can set DEP to be AlwaysOn, AlwaysOff, OptIn and OptOut. The explanation for each option can be found at http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff542202.aspx.
To set the option for DEP, start the command prompt in Administrator/Elevated mode and use bcdedit to set the value of the nx datatype.
- bcdedit /set nx OptIn to set DEP to OptIn
- bcdedit /set nx OptOut to set DEP to OptOut
- bcdedit /set nx AlwaysOn to set DEP to AlwaysOn
- bcdedit /set nx AlwaysOff to set DEP to AlwaysOff
You will need to reboot the machine after running the command to have the setting take effect.
You can check the status of DEP by going to ‘System Properties”, click on “Advanced” tab and click on the “Settings…” button in the “Performance” group.
Click on the “Data Execution Prevention” tab.
If the “Turn on DEP for essential Windows programs and services only” radio button is selected, DEP is set to OptIn.
If the “Turn on DEP for all programs and services except those I select:” radio button is selected, DEP is set to OptOut.
If both the radio buttons are not selected and greyed out, DEP can either be AlwaysOn or AlwaysOff.
Another way to check the status is to run the bcdedit command without any parameter.
Hopefully I don’t need to play around with this setting too often.
