Ever since the release of Windows 10, PC users have reported issues with the Windows Store app and Start menu. While Microsoft has issued updates to fix many of the issues, including the Settings app, users are still having issues while downloading and installing apps from the Store.
We have already discussed several ways to fix not opening the Store app in Windows 10. Some users who have gone through our fix: store app not opening guide have requested us to come up with a guide to resolve issues while downloading and installing apps from the Store.
Why clear and reset the Microsoft Store cache?
If the Store app fails to download apps or if the installation hangs in the middle without any specific error, you should be able to resolve the issue by deleting and resetting the Windows Store cache. Clearing and resetting Windows 10 Store cache can also be tried when the Store fails to update apps installed from the Store or when the Store app fails to load.
Luckily, the Store cache can be easily cleared and reset without using third-party apps or launching PowerShell. Windows 10 includes a built-in utility called WSReset to clear and reset the Store cache.
Note that clearing and resetting the Windows Store cache will not remove your installed apps or your Microsoft account info associated with the Store app.

Method 1 of 2
Clear and reset the Microsoft Store cache in Windows 10
Here is how to clear and reset the Windows Store cache in Windows 10:
Step 1: Close the Windows Store app if it’s running.
Step 2: In the Start menu search box, type WSReset (Windows Store Reset) to see Wsreset in the search results.
Step 3: Right-click on WSReset and then click Run as administrator option. Click the Yes button when you see the User Account Confirmation box.
NOTE: If the WSReset utility does not show up in the search result, you can launch the same from the System32 folder (Windows\System32). To open the WSReset tool from the System32 folder, please navigate to the drive where Windows 10 is installed (usually “C”), open up the Windows folder, and open up the System32 folder. Here, you can find the WSReset.exe file. Right-click on it and then click Run as administrator option.
Step 4: The Store app should now automatically launch along with the Command Prompt. The Command Prompt window will automatically disappear after a couple of seconds.
That’s it! You have cleared and reset the Windows Store cache in Windows 10. Open the Store app and try to install some apps from the Store. You should be able to download and install apps without any issues now.

Method 2 of 2
Reset the Store app
Resetting the Store app clears and resets the Store cache as well.
Step 1: Go to the Settings app > Apps > Apps & features page.
Step 2: Click on the Microsoft Store entry to see the hidden Advanced options link. Click on the link to open another page.
Step 3: In the Reset section, click on the Reset button to reset the Store app. When you reset the Store app, it clears the cache as well. You might need to sign in again to the Store after the reset.

Clear Microsoft Store cache for inbox apps
To clear the Store app cache on Windows 10, use these steps:

Open Start.

Search for Run and click the top result to open the dialog box.

Type the following command to clear and reset the cache of Microsoft Store and click the OK button:
WSReset.exe
Once you complete the steps, the command will clear the cache and reset the Microsoft Store to fix problems using the experience or downloading apps.
Clear Microsoft Store cache for other apps
To clear the cache for third-party apps on Windows 10, use these steps:
Important: Modifying the Registry can cause serious problems if not used properly. It’s assumed you know what you’re doing, and you have created a full backup of your system before proceeding.

Open Start.

Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.

Type the following command to list all the current user accounts and press Enter:
wmic useraccount get name,sid

Open Start.

Search for regedit and click the top result to open the Registry.

Navigate to the following path:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Appx\AppxAllUserStore

Under the “AppxAllUserStore” key, select your user account identified by the SID that you noted on step No. 3, press the Delete key, and confirm the deletion by clicking the Yes button.

Restart your computer.
After you complete the steps, the cache for the Microsoft Store apps should clear, and the apps should start working correctly.

The Microsoft Store allows you to download and install apps on your Windows computer conveniently. There are times when you may have problems using the Microsoft Store and installing apps from it. Resetting and clearing the cache can help fix these problems related to the app. In this article, we explain how to clear the Microsoft Store cache in Windows 11/10.

Purging Microsoft Cache indeed helps to resolve different app installation issues on Windows Store. With each app download, the Store accumulates a huge cache on the computer. In this post, we discuss three different ways to clean unnecessarily stored caches on Windows 10 devices. Let’s explore the solutions in detail –
Windows users often experience trouble downloading or installing apps from the Microsoft Store. Sometimes in the form of error codes like 0x803F8001, 0x80070422, 0x80073CFE, etc. If you want to solve such bugs or errors, you should try to Clear or Reset Microsoft Store Cache on the Windows 10 PC.
To clean the accumulated cache inside the Microsoft Store, try the following suggestions –
- Use WSReset Command
- Through the Settings app
- Use Registry Editor
1. Use WSReset Command
To delete the Microsoft Store apps cache on Windows 11/10, use the following steps –
- Right-click on Start and select Run from the menu list.
- Type “WSReset.exe” at the void and hit Enter.
- The moment you press the Enter key, a window appears deleting the stored Store Apps cache.
- After clearing the stored cache, this will launch the Microsoft Store.
Note: There won’t be any confirmation message, so don’t wait for it. Rather when Windows Store opens up, start using it.
Running the above single command will reset all of the Windows Store apps. Users may now download and install new applications from the Store. Usually, after resetting the Microsoft Store, you will not experience any trouble. In case, it does fall into some issues, try the below workarounds –
2. Through the Settings app
Clearing and Resetting the Store app via Windows Settings is the easiest method of all. All you require is to follow the below steps sequentially –
- Press the Windows + I keys to open the Settings UI.
- Click Apps > Apps & features on the next screen.
- Look for the “Microsoft Store” app by scrolling down on the right pane.
- Once you find this app, click once to expand its box and hit “Advanced Options“.
- On the succeeding page, scroll down and hit the “Reset” button.
- A pop-up window will appear asking to confirm the “deletion of preferences and sign-in details”, click Reset again.
When the Store app resetting completes, use your personal Microsoft account to sign in to the Windows Store.
In certain scenarios, there might appear an error message that reads –
Windows cannot find ‘ms-windows-store:PurgeCaches’.
To get rid of this bug, you need to re-register the Store app using the below guideline –
- First of all, open Command Prompt as an Administrator.
- On the elevated console, execute the below command line –
powershell -ExecutionPolicy Unrestricted Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register $Env:SystemRoot\WinStore\AppxManifest.xml
3] Use Registry Editor
If you are still unable to download or install applications on the Microsoft Store, there may be some stored cache of third-party apps. To delete these unused data, use the following steps –
Note: This method involves modifying a few key entries inside the registry. Any incorrect configuration may corrupt the entire operating system. Therefore, you need to be cautious while altering the registry. To be on the safe side, make sure to create a full backup of the important files and settings.
- Type “cmd” on the search bar, right-click on the top result, and select “Run as Administrator“.
- If the UAC window comes into view, hit Yes.
- When the Windows Console comes into view, run the below command –
wmic useraccount get name,sid
- Note down the SID against the user account that you are currently using.
- Right-click anywhere on the taskbar and select Task Manager.
- Next, go to the File menu and hit “Run new task“.
- Type “regedit” near the blinking cursor and hit OK.
- When the UAC window prompts, tap Yes to authorize the access.
- Now, browse to the following address –
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Appx\AppxAllUserStore
- On the left pane, locate the SID number (the one you noted down on the command prompt).
- Right-click on this folder and hit “Delete“.
- When a confirmation message pops up, click “Delete” again.
- Completing the above steps successfully will clear out all the stored cache on the Windows Store.
