Jagged Alliance 2: Wildfire brings you back to Arulco. Although what you find there is in no way pleasing! You are working undercover on behalf of the US government and your goal is to destroy the mighty drug cartel. You’ll need a skilled hand to put together the right team of mercenaries, the negotiating skills of a diplomat to get the sceptical population onto your side. Install
All the options below require the original Jagged Alliance 2 game on your device. Make sure you do a full, clean install. If you have a game with the 1.13 mod installed, it will not work.
The original game can be obtained through
- GOG: Jagged Alliance 2
- Steam: Jagged Alliance 2 Gold
- Steam: Jagged Alliance 2 Wildfire
- The original game files will be in the
JA2Classicsubdirectory, not in theGamesubdirectory - JA2 Stracciatella currently does not support Wildfire itself, only the Wildfire maps through a mod
- The original game files will be in the
- Buying CDs (if you can find someone who wants to sell)
Follow the instructions for your platform to install JA2 Stracciatella:

Download the installer and install Stracciatella wherever you want. Make sure to uninstall any previous version first if you want to avoid conflicts.

Run Stracciatella from the start menu. This should bring up the launcher.

Change
JA2 Game Directoryto the directory where your original game files are located. -
Select the game version of your original game files, or click the «Guess Game Version» button to have the launcher auto-detect it for you.

Adapt other settings to your liking in the
Data,ModsandSettingstab. -
Start the game in the
Playtab.

Download the ZIP and extract it wherever you want. Do not extract it in the original game directory.

Navigate to the Stracciatella directory and run
ja2-launcher.exe. This should bring up the launcher. -
Change
JA2 Game Directoryto the directory where your original game files are located. -
Select the game version of your original game files, or click the «Guess Game Version» button to have the launcher auto-detect it for you.

The Android app is currently not available through any store. You need to install the APK manually. Please inform yourself about allowing app installations from unknown sources for your device.

Copy the original game files to your Android device. This can be done by copying it to your device using USB or a cloud storage provider.

Download the Android APK and install it.

Open the app. This should bring up the Stracciatella launcher.

Change

Select the game version of your original game files. Usually this is just the language your original game is in.

Although optional, it is recommended to set the save game directory to a directory that is accessible for other apps as well. Otherwise your save games will be deleted when you uninstall the app.

Start the game with the button in the bottom right corner.
Configuration
Configuration File
The configuration file will be created on the first start of the application. It is located in
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\JA2\ja2.jsonon Windows (before version0.21.0it was%USERPROFILE%\Documents\JA2\ja2.json).~/.ja2/ja2.jsonon Linux, BSD or macOS./data/data/io.github.ja2stracciatella/ja2.jsonon Android, in the apps data directory. Usually not accessible by other apps.
Savegame directory
The savegame directory can be changed, for example to synchronize savegames with the cloud. By default the save games are located in
%USERPROFILE%\AppData\Roaming\JA2\SavedGameson Windows (before version0.21.0it was%USERPROFILE%\Documents\JA2\ja2.json).~/.ja2/SavedGameson Linux, BSD or macOS./data/data/io.github.ja2stracciatella/SavedGameson Android, in the apps data directory. Usually not accessible by other apps.
Resolution and Scaling Mode
The internal resolution lets you define how large the tactical screen is rendered. All other game screens are still rendered in the original 640x480 resolution and centered on the screen.
In order to increase the size of the game window, you can either resize it with the window controls, or enable fullscreen.
Scaling mode will determine how the internal resolution is scaled to your window.

By default and straight out of the box, you may not be able to get Jagged Alliance 2 to run on Windows 10 or Windows 11 operating systems and associated hardware. For example, the original CD or GoG versions are unlikely to work flawlessly, if at all. The exe may hang, we may just get a black screen or there may be intolerable lag and graphical glitches.
The source of this problem lies in JA2 being coded for an older OS that employed an older DirectDraw that interfaced with older custom chipsets and display drivers. When the exe doesn’t find what it’s looking for, the game crashes, hangs, lags or glitches out depending on the end-user’s OS, display settings and hardware specs. This is why some people have minor issues, some major and some none at all: it depends on the individual’s OS and hardware.
Solutions to Jagged Alliance 2 Compatibility Issues
There are many ways to solve or at least alleviate Jagged Alliance 2 compatibility issues, but there are basically four main solutions to the problem:
- Run JA2 on a retro PC
- Virtualize an old OS that emulates basic hardware and runs old DirectDraw
- Source a specific compatibility DirectDraw.dll or a general compatibility suite
- Run non-native JA2 by means of a mod or a runtime environment
Stracciatella
For most players, Stracciatella Jagged Alliance 2 is going to be the easiest solution to Jagged Alliance 2 compatibility issues.
1.13 Mod
The Jagged Alliance 2 1.13 mod comes bundled with compatibility dlls. Like Stracciatella, it also allows us to play in Windowed mode.
VirtualBox Jagged Alliance 2
Run Jagged Alliance 2 in VirtualBox with a WinXP SP3 guest OS. That’s what I’m doing. I’m running the original CD version from 1999, patched to 1.12. About as authentic as it gets short of having a retro PC.
Jagged Alliance 2 ddraw.dll
Source an alternative ddraw.dll such as cnc-ddraw. You can download the latest version from github.

Jagged Alliance 2 – Wildfire переносит юзера в несуществующее государство Аркулько. В третьем мире начинается рассказ о Королеве Дейдране, установившей военную диктатуру. Она заняла власть обманом и насилием. За любое недовольство со стороны горожан, она их жестоко наказывает. Энрико Чивалдори – законный наследник престола. Он решает нанять центрального персонажа, чтобы тот свергнул режим Королевы.
Главный герой пользуется помощью умелых солдат и профессиональных наемников. Управляя небольшими группами, пользователю требуется участвовать в локальных схватках и побеждать их, захватывая больше контроля над текущей властью. Протагонист меняет собственные навыки и характер при помощи ответов на психологический тест. Игрок сам отвечает на вопросы, а исходя из них создается главгерой. В случае недостатка денег для оплаты контрактов профессионалам, геймер может нанят менее серьезных бойцов, способных быть неуравновешенными и имеющими сомнительные прошлые задания.
Прохождение начинается с показа общей карты страны Арулько. Местность разделена на определенное число секторов с землями и городами. У игрока имеются собственные силы, как и у противника. В стратегической части геймплея понадобится контролировать действия наемников и других подопечных. Можно ускорить или замедлить ход времени. Пауза позволит подумать над дальнейшими решениями и сразу применить при возобновлении.
