[Symptoms]
When you log on to the SharePoint 2010, 2013 or online site by using your account, navigate to a document library and click “Open with Explorer” button on the ribbon, you receive the following error message:
Your client does not support opening this list with Windows Explorer
[Resolution]
To successfully make “Open with Explorer” work, we need ensure the following on the client machine side:
1. WebClient
service is started
WebClient service which the WebDav protocol enables Windows-based programs such as Windows Explorer to create, access and modify Internet-based files.
Important Note: If you are running a Windows 10 OS, the WebClient service is already installed, but not started. So, you need to change the Startup service property to Automatic and start it manually first.
Important Note: If you are running a server type Windows OS, for example, you use Window Server 2008, install Desktop Experience feature first to get WebClient service installed.
- Steps for Windows Server OS:
- From the Start menu, point to Administrative
Tools, and click Services. - Scroll down, right-click WebClient, and click Properties.
- In the Startup type list box, click Automatic.
- Click Apply.
- In the Service status section, click Start.
- Click OK.
- From the Start menu, point to Administrative
2. You have supported Web browser
For a list of supported Web browsers and support level
information, please visit:
Plan browser support
From the page you can see it’s recommended to use 32-bit Internet Explorer 7,8,9,10,11.
Note: “Open with Explorer” may not work if you have 64-bit Internet Explorer and 64-bit Microsoft Office installed.
3. Add http://your.sharepointsite.com to Local intranet site
To configure Web browser, open “Internet Options” menu, navigate to the “Security Tab”, and add http://your.sharepointsite.com to Local intranet site.
Note: If you have your site URL added on the “Trusted sites”, first, remove it form there and after that, add it on the “Local intranet” sites according to the above steps.
Then restart the browser and try it again.
4. (Optional) If you have tried the above methods, however “Open with Explorer” still does not work, try to make sure you have applied the latest updates on the system.
In addition, you can also try to enable Basic authentication on the client computer, by setting the BasicAuthLevel registry entry of the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\WebClient\Parameters

You cannot connect to a document library in Windows SharePoint Services 3.0 or Windows SharePoint Services 2.0 by using Windows shell commands or by using Explorer View
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/841215
If none of the above resolves your issue, you can open a support ticket contacting Microsoft Support.
It’s a known feature in SharePoint 2007 and 2010 that we can open up a SharePoint Document library in Windows Explorer so that we can simply do bulk operations such as copy/paste multiple set of Documents, Folders etc.… And it’s a common issue which almost every SharePoint Admin may have faced that «Your client does not support opening this list with Windows Explorer» Massage is prompted whenever an user trying to open a Document library with Explorer.
There can be various reasons for this issue. below are some set of reasons I have come across. Possibly one of these might be the point for the issue you are facing like It was for me.
1. Open with Explorer Option is Grayed out in SharePoint 2010
In 2007 The same Massage can be popped out
This is because you have not used Internet Explorer. This feature tightly depends on IE.
2. Internet Explorer Versions and Platforms
-
Windows XP | Server 2008 or R2 – Internet Explorer 7,8 or 9
-
Windows 7 – Internet Explorer 7,8 or 9 is compatible. IE 10 is not supported on Windows 7 yet for this feature. You have to revert back to 9.0 if you are on Windows 7.
-
Windows 8 or 8.1 – IE 10 Supports this feature so you have no issues with it. My Windows 8.1 Client worked like a charm.
-
And it does not supports on 64 bit version of IE. Find the IE 32 bit (X86) on Program files simply by searching if you were using IE X64.
3. Web Client Service Dependency
This feature highly depends on «Web Client» Windows Service. If you are using a Client OS the Web Client Service will be already installed (Yet make sure its running by looking at the Services), if it’s a Windows Server you need to have the «Desktop Experience» Feature Installed which will contain the Web Client Service. Do the following to get it installed.
Launch Server Manager –> Add features –> Choose «Desktop Experience» –> Restart the Machine
In my case, this was the Point and I was able to get rid of the issue by installing Desktop Experience feature then it worked like a charm.
Then Go to Services (type «services.msc» in powershell or Run command to launch Services console) and make sure the WebClient Service is Runinng and the Startup Type has set to Automatic.
4. Add the SharePoint to trusted Sites in Internet Explorer
Make sure the Site You are trying is added as a trusted Site in Internet Explorer under Trusted Zone. Open up Internet Explorer –> Internet options –> Security –> Trusted Sites –> Sites –> Add the site there
And un-tick the «Enable Protected Mode» check box too.
5. Set to Automatic Login in Internet Explorer
Open IE and click on Settings Wheel –> Internet Options –> Security Tab –> Local Intranet –> Custom level –> Drag down to the bottom
Ensure the User authentication is set as follows.

This post is to help you troubleshoot the infamous error message “Your client does not support opening this list with Windows Explorer” that can occur when you try to open a SharePoint Online document library in Windows Explorer on either Windows 7 or Windows Vista.
The point at which this error message is displayed is when the option «Open with Windows Explorer» is selected on the Actions menu of a document library:
And this is the error message:
The open in Windows Explorer feature is a very useful part of SharePoint Online as it makes managing files and folders in document libraries simple. For example, you can just drag and drop a whole folder structure from your local system to your remote document library using this feature. Therefore, its important this feature works for you so you get the most from your investment in SharePoint Online.
This post has two parts. The first part deals with the standard steps you should take to ensure your Windows 7/Vista client is configured correctly to use the feature. The second part is about troubleshooting if you still get the error message, which is quite likely in some corporate environments that lock down the security settings of Internet Explorer.
Configuring Your System
Step 1. Ensure your system has the latest Windows updates applied. Obvious, but best to check! To do this, open the Windows Update program (Start menu then search for Windows Update). Click the «Check for updates» link. If there are any updates to install then click the «Install updates» button.
Step 2. Ensure the WebClient service is not disabled. The WebClient service is critical to the Open in Windows Explorer feature. Its the WebClient service that does all the hard work and cleverness to make Windows Explorer think that a SharePoint Online document library is just a regular Windows folder. To check the WebClient service is not disabled, open up the Services program (Start menu then search for Services). Scroll down until you find the WebClient service. Its startup type should be set to either Manual or Automatic. If it is set to Disabled then change it to Manual. Note that it will start automatically when it is needed; you don’t need to start it yourself.
Step 3. Install the Microsoft Online Services sign in tool. To ensure the best experience of SharePoint Online you should install the sign in tool. To do this, click here to go to the sign in tool download page. Download and install the sign in tool. Once installed, run the program and enter your Online Services username and password. The sign in tool will prompt you that Internet Explorer needs to be configured. Click the «Continue» button.
Step 4. Check it works! OK, now open up your SharePoint Online site in Internet Explorer. Look at the status bar at the bottom of Internet Explorer. You should see the message «Local intranet Protected Mode: Off». That’s the magic for Internet Explorer to recognise your SharePoint Online site is a trusted web site — critical for the feature to work. Now when you select «Open with Windows Explorer» from the Actions menu of your document library… you should get Windows Explorer opening automatically!
Troubleshooting
OK, that’s great if it works. But what if it doesn’t? In some environments, it can be quite typical for this to fail even after you perform all the configuration steps above. This is because Internet Explorer can be locked down for security purposes by your administrator, a valid thing to do. But the side effect of this is the sign in tool cannot make the necessary changes to Internet Explorer for the feature to work.
Here’s how to check if Internet Explorer is not configured correctly and what to do if it isn’t…
Ensure you are signed in with the sign in tool then open up your SharePoint Online site and check the status bar at the bottom of Internet Explorer. If it says «Internet Protected Mode On» then you know Internet Exporer is not configured correctly.
Double click the «Internet Protected Mode On» message on the status bar. This will open up Internet Explorer’s security dialog. Click the «Local intranet» icon, then click the Sites button. A new dialog will pop up. Click the «Advanced» button. You should see the dialog below displayed. In a properly configured environment you will see an entry in the Websites list for https://*.microsoftonline.com/. If that entry is not present then you have found the cause.
In a locked down environment you will not have permission to add this entry in. You will need to ask your administrator to do this for you. This will likely result in a change to a group policy to push the change to Internet Explorer on your system.
If you do have permission, then you can simply add the entry yourself. Close Internet Explorer and open your SharePoint Online site again.
