Needs Updating
This article needs updating to include the latest versions of Ubuntu. More info.
Windows Mobile
Users of Windows Mobile 6, Windows Mobile 5, Windows Mobile 2003 and PocketPC can sync Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Files.
Windows Mobile 5, 6, 6.1
The Synce project enables USB sync with your device under Hardy, Intrepid and Jaunty. Full instructions including repository and download information can be found on the Synce wiki. There are a number of steps which must be followed exactly in order to set up a partnership between Ubuntu and your device. See their site for full details. There are several specific options you must choose for your specifc setup, so read carefully.
The Synce utilities work with both Gnome (using Evolution) and KDE (using Kontact).
Additional Functionality of the Synce Utilities
While no GUI has yet been developed, many of the basic functions of interface with the Windows Mobile 5 & 6 file system have been coded and may be used from the command line.
Usage is «synce-pcode» (substitute pcode for one of the specific examples below)
- to install a .cab file on your mobile device.
Direct Access Your Windows Mobile 5 or 6 SD card
Ubuntu does not currently support browsing a device’s storage card directly. Until that support comes, there are possible solutions:
- Usually WM6 will refer to your storage card as «Storage Card» in the \ directory. A file is successfully copied referring to this file path:
- Using Windows Mobile 6’s USB storage mode
- Using a storage device that your computer can also read, such an an SD card (if your computer has a card reader) or Sandisk’s SD+USB for file transfer.
The program WM5torage (freely available) can be installed on your WM6 device, and upon connection with a computer your memory card is then mounted as a removable drive.
Sync with an Online Calendar
It is also possible to sync your WM6 calendar with an online calendar system, such as google calendar. The program OggSync does this for free, if you only have one category in your calendar. For syncing of more categories, you will have to buy the Pro version.
Google has recently released http://www.google.com/mobile/default/sync.html][mobile synchronising software. It claims to synchronise contacts and calendar events via Exchange ActiveSync. You can currently utilise the GCALDaemon software to synchronise Gmail contacts and google calendar events with ubuntu software such as kontact and evolution. In this way you can perform a three-way sync wirelessly — although you may incur a data charge for the mobile sync. For the future, there appears to be some development using akonadi to synchronise ubuntu with google.
Connecting to an Windows Mobile 2003 or PocketPC Device
Plug in the device via the included USB cable.
Install the synce-dccm, synce-serial and librra0-tools packages. To sync with Evolution, you’ll also need the multisync, synce-multisync-plugin, libmultisync-plugin-evolution and libmultisync-plugin-backup packages. See Installing Software. The packages installer will ask various questions about how to connect to your device:
- Leave the serial interface as «/dev/ttyUSB0»
- Leave the default local IP address «192.168.131.102»
- Leave the default remote IP address «192.168.131.201»
- Set the IP address of your DNS server to «192.168.0.1»
Click Applications ->Accessories ->Terminal. In the Terminal window, run:
Depending on your device you may have to run the sudo synce-serial-start command within a few seconds of powering the Windows Mobile device on. The computer should now show: synce-serial-start is now waiting for your device to connect. The Windows Mobile Device should appear connected, in a similar way to when connected via ActiveSync on Windows.
Synchronizing with Evolution
Click Applications ->Accessories ->Multisync
Click New
- First plugin: SynCE Plugin
- Second plugin: Ximian Evolution 2
Display Name:
- Shutdown Multisync
- «killall -HUP dccm» to kill the serial connection.
- As a last resort, run «synce-serial-abort», if the above command doesn’t work.
Troubleshooting
- If you forget to run «dccm» before synce-serial-start, power off the pocket pc and run
Note: these must be run in a certain order, try a different order if it doesn’t work.
- If syncronisation still doesn’t work, close multisync and then run
- If 1 doesn’t work, try 2.
- If synce-serial-start is unable to find the file /etc/ppp/peers/synce-device then run the following and re-try
Wireless Modem
I have successfully used my XDA Exec as a wireless modem with my Laptop. This is how I got it to work(roughly) :
1. Start the Windows Mobile device in the wireless modem mode from Start-> Programs -> Wireless Modem
2. Now connect the USB cable to the computer.
3. In a Terminal, run
to see if it detects it as a modem. If this doesn’t work, edit the «/etc/wvdial.conf» file as follows:
[Dialer Defaults] Modem = /dev/ttyUSB0 Baud = 115200 Init1 = ATZ Init2 = ATQ0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 Carrier Check = no Stupid Mode = no Phone = *99# Username = Password = New PPPD = yes ISDN = 0 Modem Type = Analog Modem
6. Now type «wvdial» in the command prompt, it should now connect.
Compatibilty
Devices that are known to work with this howto:
- HP iPaq hx4150
- HP iPaq rx3115
- HP iPaq h2215/h2210
- HP iPaq h1940
- HP iPaq h1930
- HP iPaq hw6915
DELL Axim X3i & X30 & X50v
Troubleshooting
To check your Windows Mobile Device has been detected, click System -> Administration -> System Log, then select messages. Alternatively, run dmesg in a terminal.
The results should look like the following:
Comment
1- STOP sl-modem-daemon :
2- Show «Resync» button: from multisync options > show «Resync» button than use it to do sync it work with me like that 3-change the option on Ximian Evolution 2 -optional- to use address contact task from Evolution.

Windows Mobile и Ubuntu.
GNU/Linux?

Required Files
— A Kernel Tarball Package from Kernel.org (If you prefer to use git, you can clone the branch that way)
— Aarch64 boot files: bootaa64.efi and grub.cfg
— MSM8994/8992 defconfig for the Kernel (You can use a different one if you have it)
Getting Started
Update Apt and installing dependencies
Open the Terminal app on your PC and type:
$ sudo apt update
sudo apt install build-essentials crossbuild-essential-arm64 flex bison qemu-user-static debootstrap binfmt-support gparted
Extract Kernel source and copy Lumia defconfig
Navigate in the terminal to the folder where you downloaded files (linux-5.16 used as example):
$ cd ~/Downloads
tar -xvf linux-5.16.14.tar.xz
cp lumia_defconfig linux-5.16.14/.config
Build the Kernel and save the files for later
Navigate to the «linux-5.16.14» and check config file loads, and build.
$ cd linux-5.16.14/
make ARCH=arm64 CROSS_COMPILE=/usr/bin/aarch64-linux-gnu- menuconfig
When the menu appears, click Right Arrow on keyboard, Click Enter on «Exit», then:
$ make ARCH=arm64 CROSS_COMPILE=/usr/bin/aarch64-linux-gnu- deb-pkg
When that is finished, check the folder that contains our «linux-5.16.14/» folder. You should see 4 new .deb files, these we keep for later!
Prepare your 950/XL in Mass Storage Mode
It’s expected that your device is already Bootloader Unlocked, and Windows 10 ARM is already deployed (Removing WP recommended)
(Note: It is not essential to deploy WoA, if you know how to setup the uefi and bootshim manually, do so if you wish. you can also cancel WoA Deployment as it starts writing the Image to phone. just make sure Developer Menu gets installed and Partitions are configured.)
The below is going from an Unlocked 950, WoA installed with Developer Menu and Windows Mobile removed:
— Boot to Mass Storage Mode and connect to you Linux Machine.
— Open GParted, select your Phone Storage. Examples:
If your machine has 1 SSD only, the phone will be seen as «/dev/sdb»
If your machine has 2 SSDs, the phone will be seen as «/dev/sdc»
— Locate and remember your «Windows» labeled partition on the phone, usually the last partition (We will use /dev/sdb43)
— Locate and remember your «SYSTEM» labeled partition on the phone, usually 2 before «Windows» (We will use /dev/sdb41)
— Select and Format «Windows» /dev/sdb43 to ext4. !DO NOT FORMAT ANYTHING OTHER THAN THE WINDOWS PARTITION!
Open Terminal and create folders to Mount the newly created ext4 partition, and SYSTEM partition:
$ sudo mkdir /mnt/root
sudo mkdir /mnt/boot
sudo mount /dev/sdb43 /mnt/root
sudo mount /dev/sdb41 /mnt/boot
Keep Terminal open.
Deploy Ubuntu to the Phone and copying the Kernel files
Now we need to start installing Ubuntu and configure the new install using chroot access, if an issue happens, delete the contents of /mnt/root and start again
Type into the Terminal the following to start the download and install:
$ sudo qemu-debootstrap —arch=arm64 stable /mnt/root
(This will take a few minutes)
When that process is finished, we need to copy our compiled kernel files to /mnt/root:
(Your output names will be different, don’t copy the .deb with «_dbg» in the name)
(msm8992-msft-lumia-octagon-talkman.dtb is for my 950 which is in 5.16.14, replace talkman with cityman for XL)
$ cp ~/Downloads/linux-image-5.16.14-msft_talkman-1_arm64.deb /mnt/root
cp ~/Downloads/linux-libc-dev-5.16.14-msft_talkman-1_arm64.deb /mnt/root
cp ~/Downloads/linux-headers-5.16.14-msft_talkman-1_arm64.deb /mnt/root
cp ~/Downloads/linux-5.16.14/arch/arm64/boot/dts/qcom/msm8992-msft-lumia-octagon-talkman.dtb /mnt/root/boot
Keep Terminal open.
Configuring the new install
Now we need to setup a user account and install the kernel and some packages and a usable UI, first we «chroot» into the system:
$ sudo chroot /mnt/root
This will load the root shell of the new arm64 install, type to install some needed packages:
# apt update
apt install initramfs-tools sudo nano onboard locales tasksel
Now time to install the Kernel
# dpkg -i /*.deb
Installing the Desktop Environment, type in the terminal to load the options
# tasksel
Here you can choose your DE (Gnome, LXDE, Xfce etc). For this guide we choose MATE which is LightDM based
— Select Mate Desktop Environment with spacebar, press Enter to accept.
(If you receive an apt-get error, re-run the «tasksel» command)
Creating and adding a user to sudoers group. For this example I use «empy», replace with your desired username
# adduser empy
usermod -aG sudo empy
Configuring MATE by enabling auto login, Open the config file and modify under [Seat:*] section:
# nano /etc/lightdm/lightdm.conf
(Below will be empty or commented out, modify to match these settings, replacing «empy» with your username you made previously. Press Ctrl + X then press Y to save)
pam-service=lightdm
pam-autologin-service=lightdm-autologin
autologin-user=empy
autologin-user-timeout=0
session-wrapper=/etc/X11/Xsession
greeter-session=lightdm-greeter
Exit the chroot for now keeping terminal open, type:
# exit
Making the Installation bootable
Now we need to modify the «grub.cfg» file we downloaded, and then copy the boot files to SYSTEM partition mounted earlier.
If your ext4 partition and SYSTEM partition are different to this guide, you need to modify to fit your needs.
If vmlinuz, initrd and device tree have different names, please modify as needed.
Open «grub.cfg», and make sure all is correct:
set timeout=07
menuentry «Linux» {
set background_color=black
insmod part_msdos
insmod ext2
set root=(hd0,gpt43)
linux /boot/vmlinuz-5.16.14-msft-talkman root=/dev/mmcblk0p43 acpi=no rw
initrd /boot/initrd.img-5.16.14-msft-talkman
devicetree /boot/msm8992-msft-lumia-octagon-talkman.dtb
}
Now copy the boot files to SYSTEM, the unmount all mounted partitions on the phone, type in Terminal:
$ sudo cp ~/Downloads/bootaa64.efi /mnt/boot/EFI/boot
sudo cp ~/Downloads/grub.cfg /mnt/boot/EFI/boot
sudo umount /dev/sdb*
You are now finished! Unplug and reboot the Phone, In theory you should be able to load Linux

Win32 Disk Imager.
On Windows Phone, the simple answer is no. However, on Windows 10 Mobile, it could be a different story. With the introduction of the Linux subsystem in Windows, Microsoft is pushing towards the ability to run Linux apps in Windows.
