Through the 1990s the Intel Indeo codec was very popular, many computer video games and other software utilized it to encode their videos and audio. Indeo seems to be a blend, more precisely a portmanteau, of «Intel Video».

Originally the Indeo codecs were developed by the Intel Architecture Labs since 1992. It was one of the first codecs without a need of hardware acceleration. The version history goes from Intel Indeo version 2 (IR21), 3 (IV31 and IV32), 4 (IV4 and IV41) to 5 (IV50 and IV51). As of June 27, 2000, Ligos Technology acquired the rights to Intel Indeo media software.

Ligos Indeo payware

Ligos later provided Indeo video version 5.2 called «Indeo XP for Windows» as payware with the following new features:

  • Optimization of the Indeo Video 5 scalability feature
  • A wavelet compression algorithm that improves visual quality over previous versions of Indeo
  • Better compression at all levels of video quality than previous generation codecs
  • Playback performance enhancements including smoother, interpolated «zoom by 2» playback
  • Indeo XP also includes the legacy codecs Indeo Video 3.2, Indeo Video 4.5, and Indeo Audio 2.5
  • For all Windows OS from Windows 95 to Windows XP

In January 2007 Ligos released a new package called «Ligos Indeo Codecs», which is also payware. It includes Indeo video codec 5.2, Indeo video codec 4.5 and Indeo audio decoder 2.5. Indeo video 3.2 support was dropped and «Indeo XP for Windows» wasn’t available anymore.

As of the beginning of 2020, the website of Ligos Corporation went offline and the package «Ligos Indeo Codecs» isn’t available anymore. For historic reasons view the website via archive.org: Ligos Indeo Codecs.

Indeo codec on Windows Vista/7/8/8.1/10

On Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1(?) and Windows 10(?) the Indeo video codec is integrated but not registered. Open a command prompt («Start» -> «Run…» -> type «cmd» or «command», click «OK») and execute the following commands.

First change directory (64 bit Windows only)

cd C:\Windows\SysWOW64

Second register the DLL

regsvr32 ir50_32.dll

Now the Indeo video codec is activated and videos based on this codec will be played back. To unregister Indeo just execute the command below. The following error message can be ignored, Indeo will be removed from being active.

regsvr32 /u ir50_32.dll

Indeo codec download

The latest free versions of Indeo 5, also supplied as iv5setup.exe, include Indeo video 3.2, Indeo video 4.5, Indeo video 5.11 and Indeo audio 2.5.

Features of Indeo Audio 2.5 :

Indeo audio 2.5 is the primary audio compression codec used by the Indeo Video 5 Progressive Download Publisher. This release includes the following features:

  • – 8:1 Compression
  • – Indeo audio compresses 16-bit raw PCM audio by a factor of eight. For example, a one-second CD-quality audio (16-bit PCM, 44.1 kHz sample rate, stereo) clip requires 176,400 bytes of storage. After compression, it requires 22,050 bytes of storage.
  • – Support for Standard Multimedia Sample Rates. Sample rates of 8,000 Hz, 11025 Hz, 22050 Hz, and 44,100 Hz are supported. It is possible to convert to a lower sample rate while compressing an audio clip with Indeo audio. For example, the one-second CD-quality audio clip mentioned above could be converted to 8,000 Hz sample rate during compression. In this case the compressed clip would require 4,000 bytes of storage. Note, however, that decreasing the sample rate can dramatically reduce the audio quality.
  • – Support for Stereo and Mono. Both stereo (two channel) and mono (one channel) compression and playback are supported. Mono requires half the storage space of stereo. For example, if the one-second CD-quality stereo audio clip mentioned above is compressed as mono at 8,000 Hz sample rate, the resulting compressed audio clip would require only 2,000 bytes of storage! However, note that compressing stereo audio as mono can dramatically reduce the audio quality.

Indeo XP for Windows includes Indeo Video version 5.2 and Indeo Audio 2.5 and is available for purchase and download through Ligos Corporation website. The Panasonic mpeg4 as well as the xvid koepi.

Nov 20, 2011  indeo required windows 7 hi all i justed updated my laptop to a from windows xp to windows 7 now i a having trouble playing.avi videos on the new windows 7 machine as indeo codec is required to play the videos files and after abit of research ive found out that this codec is not available for windows 7. Any help with playing these files.

How to install Indeo 5

Indeo 5 has been included in Windows since XP SP2 but not enabled (nor updated) since Vista. Enable at your own risk since it is rumored to be vulnerable to malicious videos.

  • To enable, run the following from a command line in Administrator mode (you should get a popup window confirming it is enabled):
    • On 32-bit Windows run: regsvr32 %SystemRoot%system32ir50_32.dll
    • On 64-bit Windows run: regsvr32 %SystemRoot%SysWOW64ir50_32.dll
  • To disable (which may error, but still disable):
    • On 32-bit Windows run: regsvr32 /u %SystemRoot%system32ir50_32.dll
    • On 64-bit Windows run: regsvr32 /u %SystemRoot%SysWOW64ir50_32.dll

Alternative solution

A more modern solution is to install ffdshow (now called ffdshow tryouts). I have no idea, however, if this has the same vulnerabilities as the above Microsoft/Intel codecs. This open-source codec collection (based on FFmpeg) comes with an intimidating interface:

  • Download and run the ffdshow installer with the default settings
  • Run the ‘VFW configuration’ app
  • Decoder tab >> Codecs item on left >> find Indeo 5 on right
  • Change Indeo 5 from ‘disabled’ to ‘libavcodec’
  • Click Apply and/or OK

👉 Note that ffdshow may not be called for a particular format if you have more than one codec installed for that same format. One way to check this is: Decoder tab >> Output item on left >> Stream settings >> [x] Flip video vertically.

InstalledCodec is also useful for figuring out what’s what. You’ll want to run the 32-bit version in 32-bit mode because the registry looks different depending on bit mode. The codecs marked as type ‘Driver — Video’ are what VFW uses.

Indeo Video (commonly known now simply as ‘Indeo’) is a family of audio and video formats and codecs first released in 1992, and designed for real-time video playback on desktop CPUs. While its original version was related to Intel’s DVI video stream format, a hardware-only codec for the compression of television-quality video onto compact discs, Indeo was distinguished by being one of the first codecs allowing full-speed video playback without using hardware acceleration. Also unlike Cinepak and TrueMotion S, the compression used the same Y’CbCr 4:2:0 colorspace as the ITU’s H.261 and ISO’s MPEG-1.Indeo use was free of charge[1] to allow for broadest usage.

History[edit]

During the development of what became the P5Pentium microprocessor, the Intel Architecture Labs implemented one of the first, and at the time highest-quality, software-only video codecs, which was marketed as ‘Indeo Video’. It has been developed since the 1980s based on the hardware-only Digital Video Interactive (DVI) which was previously developed by General Electric.[2] Indeo was first released in 1992 along with Microsoft’s Video for Windows platform.[3] At its public introduction, it was the only video codec supported in both the Microsoft (Video for Windows) and Apple Computer’s QuickTime software environments, as well as by IBM’s software systems of the day. It was sold to Ligos Corporation in 2000.

Intel produced several different versions of the codec between 1993 and 2000, based on very different underlying mathematics and having different features.

Though Indeo saw significant usage in the mid-1990s, it remained proprietary. Intel slowed development and stopped active marketing, and it was quickly surpassed in popularity by the rise of MPEG codecs and others, as processors became more powerful and its optimization for Intel’s chips less important. Indeo still saw some use in video gamecutscene videos, such as in 1998’s Police Quest: SWAT 2.

Formats[edit]

The original format was designed for real-time playback on low-end Intel CPUs (i386 and i486), optionally supported by specialized decoder hardware (Intel i750). Decoding complexity was significantly lower than with contemporary MPEG codecs (H.261, MPEG-1 Part 2).

The codec was highly asymmetrical, meaning that it took much more computation to encode a video stream than to decode it. Intel’s ProShare video conferencing system took advantage of this, using hardware acceleration to encode the stream (and thus requiring an add-in card), but allowing the stream to be displayed on any personal computer.

Indeo 2[edit]

previously known as Real-Time Video 2, works by delta coding pixels line by line, either against the temporally or spatially directly preceding line, coupled with static Huffman coding.[4]

Indeo Video 3[edit]

is a traditional DCT-based transform coding format designed for video playback from CD-ROM that is very similar to the competing Cinepak. Kensington gravis gamepad professional. It uses chroma subsampling, delta encoding, vector quantization, run-length encoding and motion compensation (inter-frame coding) with a recommended key-frame interval of 4 and has distinctly asymmetric runtime characteristics.[5][3]

Indeo Video Interactive[edit]

had greater computational complexity and was aimed at video game developers.[6] It was based on wavelet transforms[7] and included novel features such as chroma-keyed transparency and hot spot support. Initially, there was no support for Apple systems.[8] Two variants of this technology were produced: Indeo Video 4 and 5. The format was never officially documented but later reverse engineered to allow for third-party decoders.[9]

is a transform coding format based on the modified discrete cosine transform (MDCT).[10]

Indeo Video

Official Indeo 5 decoders exist for Microsoft Windows, the classic Mac OS, BeOS R5 and the XAnim player on Unix. Reverse engineered decoders for versions 2, 3, 4 and 5 were introduced in FFmpeg between 2003 and 2011.[11] Indeo version 3 (IV31 and IV32), 4 (IV41) and 5 (IV50) are supported by MPlayer[12] and XAnim. Version 5.11 is freeware[13] and may be used on all 32-bit versions of Windows prior to Vista. Version 5.2 has been created for XP and is available for purchase from the official website[14] for use only with Windows 95, 98, ME, NT, 2000 and XP. This includes support for Indeo Video 4.5 and Indeo Audio 2.5 codecs but the version 3.2 video codec has been removed since the original release of Indeo XP for Windows. Although Indeo video is not officially supported by Windows Vista and Windows 7, simply entering the following into the command prompt might enable the playback of Indeo encoded video: regsvr32 ir50_32.dll[15]

Security advisory[edit]

The Microsoft Windows implementation of the Indeo codec contains several security vulnerabilities and one should not play Indeo videos from untrusted sources. MS tried to remove them in XP SP1 but had to release a hotfix to add it back [16]. The codec was originally licenced from Intel and MS likely don’t have the source code that would be required to fix the vulnerabilities. On fully patched systems and all Windows Vista and later systems the Indeo codec is partially disabled in most circumstances. [17]
