Change How Files Are Named When You Rip

Windows Media Player makes it easier for you to rip (copy) songs from a CD to a file on your computer by automatically assigning a file name to the music. By default the Player assigns file names by using the track number and song title, separated by a space, for example, Track Number Song Title.wma.

You can change the default file name format and the order in which each part of the file name is shown. For example, you may decide to set the Player to assign file names to each track according to the artist name and album title, in the same order as the tracks on the original CD, such as Artist Name Album Name Track Number Song Name.wma.

You can also change the separator that displays between each part of the file name. You can use a blank space, a dash, a dot, an underline, or no character. For example, if a dash is used, the preceding example file name would display as Artist Name-Album Name-Track Number-Song Name.wma.

Once you make your changes, the Player assigns file names according to your preferences each time you rip a CD. The file names of songs that have been already ripped do not change.

To change how files are named:

  • If the Player’s menu bar is not visible, click the Access application menus button, point to Tools, click Options, and then click the Rip Music tab.
  • Click File Name.
  • In the File Name Options dialog box, select the check box next to each of the details you want the Player to include in the assigned file name, as shown in the following screen shot.
  • In the Separator list, click the separator you want to use between the details.
  • To change the order in which the details display, select a detail, and then click Move Up or Move Down.
  • A preview of the file name format is displayed at the bottom of the dialog box.

In this short guide, we will show you how to automatically rename MP3 in Windows Media Player using rip music settings.

WMP offers several buttons that organize your music, create playlists, transform music CDs into files, and turn music files back into music CDs.

And it doesn’t stop here. Windows lets you rename WMP songs at any time. You may want to do this to give the song a better, more descriptive name, or you may have any number of reasons to give an album a new name. To rename your songs in Windows Media Player, follow the instructions given in this article. For an automatic way to rename Windows Media Player songs, download Easy File Renamer (EFR) software. EFR comes with a free duplicate file finder and has 9+ renaming rules. You can review the rules prior to renaming songs. Give EFR a try:

EFR is downloaded from safe, official website

Try to Find Album Info

If WMP can’t find the songs’ titles, try Find Album Info. It happens sometimes that WMP fails, just right-click the track and choose Find Album Info. This feature is so simple. All you’ve to do is to choose the correct album from the available selection and you’re off and running. But this tool has one issue: It works on a track-by-track basis, even when you select the entire album – and that’s not automated enough. But don’t take this as a hard-nosed objectivity; this feature is helpful if you’ve lost original meta information of any song. Here’s how it can help:

  1. Open WMP.
  2. Click any album in the Playlists. It lists out their contents.
  3. Right-click on any song and select Find Album Info.
  4. Search the song’s name.
  5. Found it? Good. Click Next.
  6. Here WMP gathers all info of the song you selected and displays them. Double check the info provided.
  7. Is the info correct? If it isn’t click Edit and make appropriate changes.
  8. All done. Click Finish.

Use Inbuilt Editor

Aren’t you seeing the playlist hugging WMP‘s right edge if you use the Find Album Info? Click the Playlist tab near the top-right corner. WMP has an inbuilt editor. That’s where you can rename the playlist or a song. To rename the playlist, click the playlist’s name and choose Rename Song from the menu. Here’s how:

  1. Launch WMP.
  2. Find the Playlists. Open any of the playlists to view the songs in it.
  3. Click any song. Select Edit.
  4. Here you go! Now edit the information.

Windows Media Player has been the flagship media player of Windows operating system for over two decades, since the times of Windows 3.0. It has proved to be extremely popular due to it’s easy to navigate interface and its features have been further enhanced over time as they have been subjected to a tremendous amount of polishing. Among these features, one of the most important one is the one which allows the user to rename songs and the metadata through its inbuilt interface.

This article sheds light on this topic and guides users on how to rename songs and the related meta information. If you’re looking for an automated way to rename songs safely, use the Easy File Renamer (EFR) software. EFR has 8+ renaming rules, a music tag editor and more features. Use it risk-free and download it from the official website securely:

Solution 1: Use Find Album Info

The Find album info feature is designed to automatically collect metadata from Microsoft’s server, and update the selected songs with the information that has been just gathered. This is particularly useful if the song is well known, and somehow doesn’t have its original meta information in the copy on your laptop.

  1. Open Windows Media Player from the start menu.
  2. Locate the Playlists, and click any one of them to list out their contents.
  3. Right-click the song you wish to rename, and then select Find album info.
  4. Search for the song’s name in the given search box until the correct album name shows in the search result.
  5. Once the correct album is found, select it and click Next to proceed ahead.
  6. At this point, Windows Media Player will fetch all the meta information of the selected song, and display them for verification purpose. Make sure all the given information is correct.
  7. If the information isn’t correct, click on Edit and make appropriate changes in the given text boxes.
  8. Once everything is done, click on Finish to finalize the process.

Solution 2: Use Inbuilt Editor

Unlike other media players, Windows Media Player provides a host of functions that help to change the metadata of any song listed in the playlist. This can be used not only to rename the song, but also to rename all other information attached with it.

  1. Launch Windows Media Player.
  2. Locate the Playlists and open any random playlist to be able to view the songs contained in it.
  3. Click on any song, and then select Edit from the context (right-click) menu.
  4. Now you can easily edit all kinds of meta information attached with the song by simply right-clicking on the appropriate field, selecting Edit and entering the relevant information.

OGG problem

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack.

  7. colorprint,

  9. colorprint,
