Home » Windows 10 » I Don’t Want Windows 10: A Tool To Remove Windows 10 Upgrade Notification

Ever since the beginning of this month, Microsoft has been showing Windows 10 upgrade notification on PCs running Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 with the latest updates. The notification does nothing but asks users to reserve their free upgrade by entering an email address.

The Windows 10 upgrade notification is delivered through Windows Update service, and the update KB3035583 is responsible for this notification. When the update is installed, an app called Get Windows 10 is installed on your PC.

As you probably know, the Get Windows 10 app not only allows you register for the free Windows 10 upgrade but also includes Windows 10 Upgrade Advisor tool, which helps you check your PC and installed apps for compatibility issues.

I Don't Want Windows 10

Additionally, when you reserve your free upgrade, the Get Windows 10 app automatically downloads Windows 10 installation files in the background (around July 29), and once installation files are ready, it helps you upgrade your existing Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 installation to Windows 10.

While millions of Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users have already registered for the free upgrade, thousands of users are not exactly happy with the notification. Many users who plan to continue running Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 want to get rid of Windows 10 upgrade notification by removing Get Windows 10 app.

We have already covered how you can remove Get Windows 10 app from the taskbar as we as your PC. But if you still see the upgrade notification even after following all the workarounds out there on the web, here is a free tool that promises to remove Windows 10 Upgrade Notification completely.

I Don't Want Windows 10 tool

I Don’t Want Windows 10 is a free application released by a member of the MSFN forum to get rid of Windows 10 upgrade notification from your Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 PC.

Although the tool does nothing but uninstalls the update responsible for the upgrade notification, many users who can’t uninstall the update can use this tool. I Don’t Want Windows 10 application is compatible with Windows 7 as well as Windows 8.1, both x86 and x64.

Head over to the link mentioned at the end of this article to download I Don’t Want Windows 10 tool. Those of you on Windows 8.1, the smart screen filter, might suggest you against running this tool. You can ignore the warning and run this tool as the tool is safe.

For those who are wondering, the upgrade notification might come back at a later time if and when the update is installed again. By the way, Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 users can upgrade to Windows 10 without losing data and by keeping most of the installed programs.

I Don’t Want Windows 10

A graphical uninstaller for the «Get Windows 10» update (KB3035583) that is installed on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 systems.

I uploaded a pre-compiled zip file to the Internet on 6/2/2015, a day after KB3035583 (I will refer to it as the GWX update from now on) was activated, and I got mixed reactions. Much of the negative criticism was that people would not know if this was secure. I have decided to release the source code here so anyone can both verify its integrity and improve the utility for the good of everyone. Many people have also noted it would be easier to just run WUSA /UNINSTALL /KB:3035583 in a command prompt or batch file, or just uninstall the GWX update through the Control Panel, and while I understand that this is much easier, I decided to make this utility for the average user to be able to just run it without the hassle of the command prompt or selecting the proper update to uninstall in the Control Panel.

The Project

I created this in Visual Studio 2005. (yes, I know, it’s all I had) To launch the project in Visual Studio, just click on idw_winX.sln. The main C++ file is /I Don’t Want Windows 10/I Don’t Want Windows 10.cpp.

How it Works

In the main C++ file, the program makes sure it’s not being run on any Windows other than Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, and makes sure that if it’s being run under WoW64 to disable file system redirection. The program then executes a system() call to wusa /uninstall /kb:3035583 to finally uninstall the GWX update.

Command-Line Flags

You can now start I Don’t Want Windows 10 from the Command Prompt! Here is how you would go about doing that. Be sure to read the issues section before you use this utility from the console.

Syntax: "I Dont Want Windows 10.exe" /nogui ~OR~ /adv

Flags:

/nogui — Run the utility as you would normally, but without a GUI

/adv — Run the utility in Advanced Mode (Experienced Users Only)

WARNING: Only include ONE command-line flag at a time. /adv implies /nogui.

Issues

The MessageBox problem from before is now fixed, but now we have command-line problems. I can’t get anything echoed out in a console, the flags still work though. You can also only specify one command-line flag at a time. This should be fixed in a v3.0.x bug-fix release or v4.0.

The Future

I am currently planning or working on the following features:

  • Hiding the update after uninstall
  • Enhancing command-line support
  • Removing multiple bad updates at once.

Note that the project description data, including the texts, logos, images, and/or trademarks,
for each open source project belongs to its rightful owner.

I Don’t Want Windows 10 Description

While we do not argue Microsoft’s decision to ensure a quick user adoption for Windows 10 by force-installing a so-called GWX.exe app on your computer’s system, we do understand that you might not fully agree with the reasoning behind it.

A quick search on the Internet and you should find helpful tutorials on how to disable the aforementioned app by first removing it from the Task Manager’s Start-up section or by uninstalling it using Windows Update.

Appropriately named, I Don’t Want Windows 10 is a streamlined uninstaller aimed at beginner users that do not want to manually deactivate the update code-named KB3035583. In other words, the utility basically uninstalls the GWX.exe app and all its related contents from your system with just a few mouse clicks.

An unofficial method for disabling the “Get Windows 10” update

Before you get started, you should know that this is not an official Microsoft-vetted software solution, so caution is advised. In addition, you might also want to turn off the Windows Updates from the Control Panel, as we have discovered during our tests that this is the best option to make the app work.

The process is as straightforward as you would imagine, with you only having to launch the uninstaller and from there let yourself guided by a simple wizard.

Hassle-free solution for getting rid of the KB3035583 update notification

Optionally, you can activate the Advanced Mode, but without actually gaining increased control over the process. In fact, the Advanced Mode only offers you a list of detailed instructions about the files that are removed, therefore making it easy for you to understand the possible repercussions.

At the end of the process, the setup requires you to restart your computer for the changes to take effect. If all went well, at system start-up, you should have a cleaner taskbar without the “Get Windows 10” icon present.

The fastest way to uninstall the “Get Windows 10” system update

All in all, while this may not be the most reliable method of getting rid of the pesky “Get Windows 10” icon (as it might actually find its way back with other small Windows updates), for the moment, it surely is one of the fastest solutions out there.
