This article covers how to remove a PIN in Windows 10. PINs are an optional way to sign in, much like a password, alongside other options like fingerprint and face authentication.
If you have kids, roommates, or a work device, it’s usually best to keep a lock on your user account, but if it’s just you at home, how you sign in likely doesn’t matter. So, if convenience is a priority, you can go without a password and not be at risk.
How Do I Disable the PIN in Windows 10?
Like setting a PIN in Windows, removing one takes only a few clicks and seconds. Ensure you’ve signed in to the account you want to remove the PIN from before you begin.

Open the Start menu and select Settings.

When asked to confirm to remove your PIN, select Remove once more, and then your PIN will be gone.
If you signed in to Windows with your Microsoft account, you’ll need to enter your Microsoft account password to remove your PIN after confirming.
Windows 10 PIN Tips and Tricks
If you change your mind and want a PIN again, making one is just as easy. From the same place where you chose Remove, you can now select Add. Set and confirm your PIN to be prompted for it the next time you sign in. In the future, select Change instead to make a new PIN.
The Sign-in options page also allows you to sign in to your device in various ways, including a traditional password. From this window, you can easily adjust all your sign-in needs.
If you sign in with a Microsoft account, however, you will not be able to change your Microsoft password here. Any sign-in method you choose, even if you linked your computer to your Microsoft account, will apply only to your computer and not your Microsoft account.

Four Effective Methods To Remove PIN From Windows PC
We have listed four methods to remove the PIN from your Windows PC. Start with the easiest method > restart your computer to check if the PIN has been removed. This way, you can ignore the remaining methods. Otherwise, follow the methods in the order they are listed based on their difficulty level.
Important : These methods will only work if you know sign-in details like username and password/ PIN.
Method 1: Use Windows Settings
Setting up a PIN on Windows 10 is straightforward, and disabling it is equally simple through the Windows Settings. To make changes, sign in to your account on the device.
Step 1: Press Win + I to open the Settings.
Step 2: Click on the Accounts tab in the left panel.
Step 3: On the right side, click on Sign-in options.
Step 4: Now, click on PIN (Windows Hello) dropdown to reveal more options.
Step 5: Click the Remove button next to Remove this Sign-in option.
Step 6: Enter your PIN to confirm, and you are set.
Method 2: Use Command Prompt
Step 1: Press Win + S and type “cmd.”
Step 2: The Command Prompt app will appear under Best Match results. To open it, click on the Run As Administrator option.
Step 3: Now type the following command followed by the Enter key:

Step 4: The User Accounts box will now appear on your screen. Click on the User account on which you wish to disable the PIN and Password to select it.
Step 5: Uncheck the checkbox next to “Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer,” then click Apply and OK.
Step 6: A prompt box will appear where the user name will be mentioned. You must leave the password, confirm password fields blank, and click OK.
Note : The password and confirm password fields must be left blank. If you enter a blank space, your password will become a blank space, and you will be required to press the space key to log in every time your PC reboots.
Method 3: Use The Windows Registry
Step 1: Press Win + R to launch the RUN box and type “Regedit,” followed by the Enter key.
Step 2: The Registry box will open. Copy and paste the following path in the address bar of the Registry Editor, followed by the Enter key.

Step 3: Locate the Registry entry “Value” in the right panel and double-click on it.
Step 4: A new box will open, where the Value Data is to be changed to “0.”
Step 5: Exit the Registry Editor and restart your computer.
Note : You will not be asked to enter the PIN to log in to your PC. You can repeat the above steps and change the value data to “1” to enable the PIN.
Method 4: Use Group Policy Editor
Step 1: Press Win + R to open the RUN box and type “gpedit.msc” followed by a click on the OK button.
Step 2: A new box will open. In it, click on the following entries in the left panel one by one.
Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > System > Logon
Step 3: In the right panel, locate the following options and double-click on each of them to select Enabled or Disabled.

Step 1: Press Win + I to open the Settings app.
Step 2: Click on Accounts.

- Expand the list for the PIN. If the Remove button is greyed out, which it usually should be, then scroll below and turn OFF the option For improved security, only allow Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts on this device.
- Close the Settings window and reopen it. Then, select Remove corresponding to the PIN to remove the same. Now, you can login to your system using the password.
How to remove PIN in Windows 10
Follow the below-mentioned steps to remove PIN login from Windows 10. Kindly note that in case you are using face or fingerprint recognition, they will stop working on PIN removal.
- Go to the Start Menu on the Taskbar.
- Open Settings.
- Click on Accounts.
- The Accounts section open to Your Info. Click on the Sign-in options in the left sidebar.
- Under the Select a sign-in option to add, change or remove, select Windows Hello PIN
- Click the Remove button to remove your existing Windows Hello PIN.
Once you do that, you will be asked to reconfirm.

Will other Windows Hello options work after removing the PIN?
No. The Windows Hello PIN is mandatory for using any other Windows Hello login option. However, you can still enter your system using the Microsoft account password.
Why is the Windows Hello PIN only 4 characters long while passwords are required to be much stronger?
The reason is that cybercriminals can access your password over the cloud, thus giving them ample time and opportunities to breakthrough. The PIN is device-specific. To hack your computer which is protected through the PIN, the hacker would need to physically access your computer.
PIN Remove Button greyed-out
In case you are unable to click on the Remove button because it is greyed out, it means that you have the “Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts” option enabled.
Disable the button and, then you will be to click on the PIN “Remove” button.
The “Require Windows Hello sign-in for Microsoft accounts” option is located in the Sign-in options settings window. You can press the toggle button to disable it. You can then close the Settings window and re-open a fresh one. The PIN “Remove” button can then be used again.
What will happen after the Windows Hello PIN is removed?
Once the PIN is removed from Windows, once you restart the computer, Windows will ask you for the account’s password that you used for login before setting up your PIN.
In case the account used to sign up is Windows is a Microsoft account, the password cannot be removed because it is an online account. If it is a local account, you can remove the password for the Windows login. You can also create a local account without a password so that the computer can boot without a Windows Hello PIN, password, or other sign-in options.
How to reset the forgotten PIN on Windows 110?
You can reset your Windows Hello PIN on the startup lock screen by clicking on the “I forgot my PIN” link. You will then be required to enter your Microsoft account’s password. This will enable you to set up a new PIN for logging into Windows 11/10.
