gnome
A video game emulator and gaming platform built into the GNOME desktop environment, offering easy access to hundreds of classic games for consoles and older computers.
What is GNOME Games?
GNOME Games is an open source, free software application included in the GNOME desktop environment. It serves as a hub for accessing and playing video games, both native Linux games as well as games meant for other platforms via emulation.
The application comes pre-installed on many Linux distributions that use GNOME as the default desktop environment, such as Ubuntu, Fedora, and Debian. It aims to provide a clean, simple interface for launching games from your Linux desktop.
GNOME Games relies on emulator cores and plugins to allow you to play thousands of classic and retro titles originally created for platforms like Super Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Sony Playstation, Nintendo 64, and others. It uses emulators like Mednafen, Mupen64Plus, Genesis Plus GX, and more under the hood.
Beyond game emulation, GNOME Games also provides access to many native, Linux-compatible games. From indie gems to major AAA titles via Steam integration, you can launch many of your favorite Linux games straight from GNOME Games.
Some key features of GNOME Games include: game library management and browsing, controller and keyboard mapping support, metadata and box art for games, achievement tracking, online multiplayer (through emulator netplay), and support for saving/loading game state between sessions.
With an intuitive GUI and extensive game compatibility via plugins, GNOME Games aims to be the central place to play video games in GNOME desktop environment distros.
