Introduction
👋 Hello everyone! I want to talk about my Second Channel, Cube Copium TDX, and a computer that I haven’t featured in a while. This system contains some outdated hardware that was last upgraded in late 2017. It features an AMD FX 8120 processor and has 16 gigs of DDR3 1600 memory. In this article, I will discuss the specifications of the computer, the experience of upgrading to Windows 11, the performance of the old processor, and more. So, let’s dive in!
The Computer Specs
Let’s take a closer look at the hardware specifications of this computer. The system consists of an AMD FX 8120 processor, which originally was marketed as an eight-core processor, but in reality, it functions more like a quad-core with two Threads per core. It has 16 gigs of DDR3 1600 memory, a Radeon HD 6750 graphics card, and a Corsair CX 450 power supply. The motherboard used is an ASRock 890 FX Deluxe 4, which is technically a socket AM3 motherboard. Additionally, the system includes a 240GB solid-state drive (SSD) and a storage drive. While the computer may be a bit outdated, it still has some impressive performance capabilities.
Upgrading to Windows 11
With the recent release of Windows 11, I decided to give it a try on this old computer. Windows 11 brings a new and improved user interface and several new features. However, before starting the installation, there are a few things to consider. Firstly, the motherboard in this system is a socket AM3 board, not a socket AM3+ board. This means that it technically does not meet the minimum system requirements for Windows 11. However, many users have reported successfully running Windows 11 on unsupported hardware. So, I went ahead and obtained a Windows 11 USB installer and prepared for the upgrade.
After successfully booting from the USB installer, I selected the Windows 11 Pro edition and proceeded with the installation. It’s worth mentioning that this system does not have a UEFI BIOS but uses a classic BIOS instead. Once the installation was completed, I was greeted with the new Windows 11 desktop. The installation process went smoothly, and the computer was up and running with the latest operating system.
The Performance of the Old Processor
One of the key components of this computer is the AMD FX 8120 processor. While it may be outdated, it still manages to deliver decent performance. However, I must admit that it tends to run hot and act as a space heater. The power supply, despite being a 450W unit, struggles to handle the system’s load, especially under heavy usage. The stock fan that came with the processor had to be replaced with a more aggressive one to improve cooling. Although it does the job, it can become quite noisy when the CPU is under load.
Compared to newer processors like the Ryzen series, the FX 8120 falls behind in terms of efficiency and performance. The FX 8120 has a TDP of 125W, while newer processors are more power-efficient and offer better overall performance. Despite these limitations, the FX 8120 is still capable of handling Windows 11 and running everyday tasks smoothly. However, for more demanding applications or gaming, it may struggle to keep up.
The Space Heating Issue
As Mentioned earlier, the FX 8120 processor in this computer generates a significant amount of heat, turning it into a space heater. The power supply’s fan speed increases to compensate, resulting in increased noise levels. The case’s ventilation is not optimal, further worsening the heat dissipation. Although efforts have been made to improve cooling, such as swapping the stock fan for a more efficient one, the system still runs hot.
This space heating issue is one of the reasons why newer processors, like the Ryzen series, are preferred. They offer better performance while being more efficient and generating less heat. The FX 8120, being a 125W TDP processor, consumes more power and produces more heat compared to newer alternatives. So, if you’re looking for a computer that runs cool and quiet, it might be wise to consider upgrading to a more modern processor.
Plans for Repurposing the Hardware
Considering the age and limitations of this computer, I have plans to repurpose the hardware. One option is to give it to a friend who may find it useful for basic tasks or as a secondary workstation. Another option is to salvage specific components, such as the AMD FX processor, and swap it onto a different motherboard. By doing this, I can utilize the water cooler and other components from another system to enhance its performance and cooling capabilities.
The current case, a Raymax Scorpio, is a bit dated and not ideal for optimal ventilation. Therefore, I intend to move the hardware to a different case that offers improved cooling. This will allow the system to perform at its maximum potential without the constraints of an inefficient case design. While this hardware holds sentimental value, it’s important to adapt and repurpose it for more practical use.
Windows Update on Unsupported Hardware
With the release of Windows 11, there has been a lot of speculation regarding the compatibility of unsupported hardware with Windows Update. Many users wonder if it’s possible to install new feature updates without facing any issues. Based on my experience, I can confirm that Windows Update does work on unsupported hardware. However, the question arises when a new feature update, such as Windows 11 22H2, is released. It remains to be seen whether these updates can be installed seamlessly or if compatibility issues will arise.
Installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware is a personal decision, but it’s important to consider the potential risks and limitations. While many users have successfully installed and run Windows 11 on older systems, it’s not recommended, especially if you plan to sell the computer to someone else. It’s best to wait for official support or upgrade to newer hardware that meets the minimum requirements.
The Future of Windows 10 Support
As Microsoft continues to push Windows 11 as the future of their operating system, the question arises: what will happen to Windows 10? Currently, Windows 10 is still supported, but it’s inevitable that support will eventually end. Microsoft will have to make a decision on whether to extend support for Windows 10 or relax the minimum requirements for Windows 11. Similar to how Windows XP’s support got extended due to the popularity of netbooks, Microsoft might have to reconsider their approach based on user demand and hardware limitations.
It’s uncertain what the future holds, but users and businesses alike will have to adapt to the changes. Whether it’s extending support for Windows 10 or revising the requirements for Windows 11, Microsoft needs to ensure a smooth transition for users. In the meantime, it’s important to stay informed and make the best decisions based on individual circumstances.
The Default App Settings Issue
One of the issues that users have faced with Windows 11 is the default app settings. Microsoft has made changes to how default apps are handled, causing confusion and frustration for many users. For example, when trying to change the default browser or video player, the options are not as straightforward as they used to be. Instead of a centralized default app settings page, Microsoft has made changes to handle default apps based on file types.
This change in default app settings can be problematic for users who are used to the traditional approach. It makes it harder to set default apps for specific tasks and can lead to a less Cohesive user experience. While Windows 11 brings several improvements, this specific change has drawn criticism from users who prefer a more straightforward and centralized approach to default app settings.
Conclusion
In conclusion, this article has explored the specifications and experience of upgrading an old computer to Windows 11. Despite the outdated hardware and space heating issue, the computer manages to run Windows 11 smoothly. However, caution should be exercised when installing Windows 11 on unsupported hardware, especially if intending to sell the computer.
Looking ahead, the future of Windows 10 support remains uncertain. Microsoft will need to make decisions based on user demand and hardware limitations. Additionally, the changes to default app settings in Windows 11 have caused frustration for some users. While Windows 11 brings new features and improvements, it’s important to consider the potential challenges and adapt accordingly.

It says 8-core up top still.
Funny how the bottom doesn’t now!
For Intel, at least my CPU (7960x), it doesn’t list the number of cores up top.

By the way, this is not new or a recent change. It has been this way for at least a couple years now.
It’s all about scheduling. Treating it as multithreaded 4-core was how Linux managed scheduling on Bulldozer from pretty much the beginning.

It’s been like this for a while. Some Bulldozer based CPUs it reads each module as a core and each core as a thread, others it identifies each core as an actual core and thread.
It says 8-core up top still.

That’s because Eight-Core is part of the CPU name string. Windows just reads that string and displays it, AMD and Intel decide what goes there.
