The Epson Expression Premium XP-615 is a small, versatile, all-in-one printer without skimping on performance. Built with families and photo enthusiasts in mind, it uses Epson’s five-colour Claria Premium dye and pigment ink set to produce excellent photos, with a dedicated photo black ink cartridge ensuring better-than-average photo prints that have more vibrant colors and richer, deeper blacks and sharp, clear text documents. , and its high-quality print capability, in general, truly separates the XP-615 from many competitors at this price point.

In addition to its performance, the XP-615 has a few nice functional and design touches. The small but well-presented touch panel makes it a doddle to use, and the dual paper trays – one for A4-sized paper and a second for 6x4in photo paper – are an excellent addition that allows you to flick between document and photo printing without having to wrestle with irritating manual paper changes. The Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi Direct connectivity – you also get the freedom to print from smartphones and tablets using the Epson Connect smartphone app, but also compatibility with Google Cloud Print and AirPrint for those who don’t want to use Epson’s Mobile Print service – which allows the printer to slot neatly into a modern digital home, are the icing on the cake.

It could be better, though. Ink prices, particularly if you need to print regularly, could quickly become a stumbling block. While the printer does well speed-wise for text documents, the same is true for its photo prints, which can emerge painfully slowly. That said, these are relatively minor moans when stacked up against the printer’s overall performance. Offering a winning combination of excellent print quality, a comprehensive list of connectivity options, and easy-to-use features – and at an eminently reasonable price – the Epson Expression Premium XP-615 is very much worth consideration if printing off high-quality photos is a high priority for you.
