Beyond simple documents, the Epson Perfection V33 scanner offers a versatile set of capabilities. Its impressive 4800 dpi optical resolution and high 48-bit color depth deliver high-quality scans filled with detail and accurate color reproduction. It makes it more than capable of scanning even high-resolution photos where every last detail is essential. Support for 3D objects and thick books via an extendable hinge makes the device more flexible, allowing it to digitize more than just your average flat documents.

Whereas some scanners cater to the beginner user with many automatic features that remove the need for user input, the Perfection V33 takes the opposite approach. The scanner is happy to automate many of the more mundane aspects of the process, such as pre-determining document size, resolution, and file type. Still, it also leaves enough control in the user’s hands to refine any artistic or sensitive content properly. The most basic auto-scan is as easy as laying down a print, pressing the scan button, and directing the output to a printer, file, or opened Office application. However, if you decide to scan that print at a significantly higher or lower resolution or want to change to 48-bit color depth and save an RGB file, the dig through the software is brief and painless. Epson’s one-touch operation holds true, but the stripped-down version allows the greenest of novices and time-constrained professionals to extract a great-looking result with minimal thought and delay. On the flip side, many users also felt the lack of strength when it came to color adjustment, and more precise file management made the included ArcSoft Scan-n-Stitch Deluxe software feel more like a kiddy pool compared to the Olympic-sized laps that Adobe Photoshop and the like can take. It might be fine for scanning in large prints to email, or a playbill for eBay, but aspiring artists, architects, and other professionals can undoubtedly find the limitations.

With this said, the Epson Perfection V33 isn’t without its drawbacks that limit its functionality in a fast-paced business environment. Unlike some document scanners, the V33 does not have an Automatic Document Feeder (ADF). So, scanning a multi-page document is a hassle and takes too much time. Also, while film scanning capability is a vestigial feature to most business users, photo enthusiasts wanting to digitize photo negatives won’t be happy that this is not a hardware capability. But for students, home office users, and the casual artist who needs to scan the occasional high-resolution image, the V33 provides a budget-friendly solution that doesn’t skimp on picture quality, even if it lacks some of the higher-end features that speed the scanning workflow.
