HandBrake is a program for converting DVD video to different formats. With the help of this application you can easily save your favorite DVD movies in MP4, MKV, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, Theora and H.264(x264) formats, choosing the necessary subtitles. Первое, что не понравилось, так это неполное описание программы. Не указано. что она кроссплатформенная и что для ее работы требуется установка .NET 6.0 Runtime, суммарно более 300 МВ, в исходную конфигурацию Windows не включенные. Я бы сразу отказался от скачивания и установки, тем более, что программа оповещает о своих требованиях только при первом запуске. У программы очень странный набор пресетов, отсутствуют лицензируемы кодеки (DivX, Xvid, другие не проверял, потому что не были мне нужны). То, что подается как «Инструменты» на них ничуть непохоже, меню «Настройки» или предпочтения — по сути второстепенные показатели. Очень часто востребованная операция с простой заменой одного двух критериев кодирования с сохранение других от исходного файла превращается в поход по французским Альпам. Итог — удалил и программу и Runtime с последующей чисткой реестра. Не мела баба клопату — купила парася

Отличная бесплатная прога с множеством возможностей: захват с конвертацией видео(можно отдельно звука) с диска и из компа, изменение соотношения сторон видео, выбор различных кодеков, битрейта. Необходим установленый на винду NetFramework. Одна из лучших программ данного предназначения. Пять баллов.

Новые версии требуют обновленный .NET Framework, но с сайта можно скачать старые версии, в т.ч. под Windows XP. Лично пользуемся v0.9.9 на Win7 x64. всё отлично работает. Интерфейс спартанский, но вполне функциональный, в настройках копались недолго, ибо многое интуитивно понятно — легко можно увидеть, где поменять, например, формат файла или разрешение. Есть масса дополнительных параметров для более тонкой конвертации, которые профи, возможно, тоже найдут полезными.
Порадовало также то, что автоматически распознает DVD-файлы, и можно выудить оттуда все дорожки и субтитры, а потом собрать это всё в MKV. Единственное, их надо дополнительно выбрать во вкладках Audio и Subtitles, ибо по умолчанию появляется только одна звуковая дорожка. Но это так, мелочи, которые никак не умаляют достоинств программы.

I batch converted 388 .mp4 files by dropping the container folder into the «Source Selection» window of Handbrake. It converted 49.3 GB of .mp4 files down to 9.00 GB. I cannot tell any difference in either the video or audio quality when comparing with VLC player. Wow! Excellent program!
Here’s how I did it:
Using HandBrake to shrink file size.
1.Launch HandBrake and drop the folder that stores all the video files you want to convert into the «Source Selection» window. Optionally click «Folder (batch scan)» to choose the folder to batch scan and convert.
2.Click «Tools-> Preferences», navigate to «Output Files» and click «Browse» to choose a folder for saving output files. I left all the (checked/unchecked) boxes as is. One of them, «Automatically name output files» was already checked by the Handbrake program default settings. Then, click «< Back» to go back to main window.
3.Choose any output presets you’d like. I chose «Very Fast 720p30 (Default)».
4.Click the down arrow beside «Add to Queue». I chose «Add All» for batch converting all my 388 .mp4 files. Once added, you will see a number beside «Queue».
5.I clicked «Add to Queue», and selected «Add All». Beside «Queue» the number 388 in white numerals was displayed in a blue oval.
6.Then I clicked the «Start Queue» button to begin processing HandBrake batch video.
7.You’ll see a green status bar in the bottom left-hand corner that indicates the progress. When done, in that same bottom corner Handbrake displayed «Queue Finished».

Fantastic freeware which imho never gets enough credit. Many companies out there use free FFmeg via their inferior gui’s and charge you quite a lot for doing what Handbrake, Staxrip and Hybrid do for free and vastly much better without any charge!

Did a quick check of latest version 1.6.1 and it may no longer support ripping using libdvdcss.dll Tested on Win10 64bit 22H2 and Win 11 22H2. 1.6.0 was last version to support libdvdcdd.dll. 1.6.1 needs more testing.

HandBrake, which is free and open source, can be used to rip DVD or Blu-ray, convert videos so that you can play them in your iOS devices, convert multiple videos at once, and add subtitles to movies.
You can even use HandBrake to denoise a video to improve its quality. It is hard to deny that HandBrake is one of top video transcoder around, but unfortunately beginners will likely to find it difficult to use HandBrake.
Features and Highlights
There are only three steps to follow through to install HandBrake. At the end of the installation, it offers to add a desktop shortcut for all users.
To use HandBrake, your PC must already have .NET 5.0 Desktop Runtime installed. There will be a message that offers to download it if your PC doesn’t have it yet. If you accept it, the download page will open in a new tab on your browser. The file size of .NET 5.0 Desktop Runtime is 52.3 MB.
HandBrake current version is 1.4.0 which was released on July 18, 2021. In addition to the third-party libraries, the new update also include some new filters, support for 12 bit and 10 bit, as well as support for passing HDR10 metadata and many others.
The new update, unfortunately, include a compatibility change that some of you might not like. It is said that HandBrake 1.4.0 supports only Windows 10. You can still run it on Windows 7 and Windows 8.1, but you will get a notification that the Windows versions are no longer supported officially.
HandBrake provides many conversion presets so that you can start converting a video as quick as possible. The presets include but not limited to Android 1080p30, Apple 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround, Chromecast 2160p60 4K HEVC Surround, and PlayStation 1080p30 Surround.
After you load a video, you can choose one preset, and start the conversion process. Advanced users can adjust some encoding settings to get a better quality. Some effects can be applied to the video as well to make it more interesting.
Using the presets can save time, and HandBrake also allows you to convert videos in batch. To do this, select videos that you need to convert, choose a folder to save the output, choose a preset, hit the button to start the process, and wait until all of the videos are converted. Note that while converting videos in batch will save you from the hassle of converting videos one by one, the conversion process could take a long time if you convert many videos at once. The specifications of your hardware is also a contributing factor.
HandBrake Free Download for Windows
Adding several subtitles to a movie is very easy with HandBrake. By doing so, you will be able to switch between subtitles during the video playback. After you add the subtitles, you just need to open the video in your favorite video player. Most video players show subtitle automatically.
