Yes, I have googled this. Everything I’ve seen tells me to go to control panel > all control panel items (which I’m already in because I have the Control Panel to show as a menu, not a link) > system icons. Problem is, I don’t have a system icons menu. If it makes any difference I’m running Home Premium, so maybe only users of the «better versions» like Ultimate get to shut it off?

control panel>all icons>Task bar and start menu>taskbar tab>customize (notification area section in middle)>turn system icons on or off (link under the list of all the icons, above the checkbox at the bottom)> turn it off in there. Done

Thanks, but I want to disable the thing as in completely get rid of it, not just hide it from the system tray.

And telling it to not display any messages gets it out of the way, the same way disabling the icon in the suggestions above does, but Action Center is still enabled and running.

Unfortunately that doesn’t disable Action Center, all it does it cause Acution Center to bitch about the Security Center service not running.

thats why you uncheck all of the boxes all i think action center is is a warning about various other aspects of the pc. so just uncheck everything and it wont complain about jack or show the icon its worked on countless 7 formats with me. though i do agree security center is diffirent i wasnt entirely implying that it was the same more like security center in itself is also an unneeded program

granted but unchecking what it monitors surely is a way to lighten the load? id imagine anyway seeing as your telling it not to actuively check those programs

As far as I can tell, uncheck them just disabled the message, it still monitors everything…I know it is stupid…

damn well in that case i cant seem to find anything in the services etc that make it obvious its associated with action center. so its probably some kind of intigrated into the OS

I know it’s an old thread, just giving it an answer.
Completely disable action center:
1. Take Ownership of its dll files — Go to C:\Windows\System32, right-click the file «actioncenter.dll» and click Properties > Security > Advanced > Owner > Edit > Select your name and click OK/Yes/OK. Do the same thing for the file «actioncenterCPL.dll».
2. Need to Restart the dll for the change in ownership to take effect. CTRL+ALT+DEL and Start Task Manager. Go to Processes, select «explorer.exe» and End Process (because the actioncenter.dll file runs under explorer.exe). Go to Applications and click New Task, type explorer.exe and click OK.
3. Make a new folder on your C drive to which you’ll move the two DLL files for safe keeping. This will prevent them from being started by explorer. I used C:\ACDLL.
4. Need to close explorer.exe again so that the two dll files are no longer in use. Again go to Processes, select «explorer.exe» and End Process.
5. Move the two dll files to a different location using Command Prompt — in Task Manager, go to Applications and click New Task. Type cmd and click OK. In command prompt, type the following without the quotes (substitute ACDLL for whatever folder you’re using): «move C:\windows\system32\actioncenter.dll C:\ACDLL\» and hit Enter. It should say «1 file moved». Then do the same for the actioncenterCPL.dll file.
6. Start explorer again. Go to Task Manager, Applications, New Task, «explorer» and click OK. You will notice Action Center is no longer running.
If anyone reports it working, I’ll link the source, but just in case, I’ll keep it back for now.
EDIT: Maybe you could try disabling the Security Centre service after doing this?

If for some reason you don’t want to use Group Policy to disable the Windows 7 Action Center, then there is a registry key you can set to disable it.
HKLMSOFTWAREMICROSOFTWINDOWSCURRENTVERSIONPOLICIESEXPLORER

Once the registry key is set to a value of “1”, certain items will be greyed out in the Action Center configuration, and you will no longer see the Action Center icon in the system tray.
There is a simple Group Policy setting for this as well, this is generally my preference, but I had a client who wanted to disable it in the image regardless.

Windows 7 Action Center is a one stop place where you can find system maintenance information, security information and also troubleshoot computer problems if any.
The Action Center contains messages that have been sent to you from Windows and other programs that, at least from the viewpoint of the program, you need to respond to.
When a message is sent to you by a program, a flag with a red X appears in the notification area (as shown below).
You can change how the Action Center informs you of an alert message or even disable this feature. The following show you how to do that.
To respond to the Windows 7 action center
- Click the notification area Action Center flag to open the Action Center jump list.
- From the window open, click any option on the jump list to go directly to the window or dialog box, where you can view the message and possibly take corrective actions.
- From the window open, click Open Action Center to review recent messages and resolve problems.
- Click the relevant item to address the issue, and when you are ready, close the Action Center.

To change the Windows 7 action center settings
- Click the notification area Action Center flag to open the Action Center jump list.
- From the window open, click Open Action Center.
- As you can see, the Action Center addresses two categories: Security and Maintenance.
- If you click the Security link, you are presented with all of the needed security information, problems and the options to troubleshoot. Click Back button to go back.
- If you click the Maintenance link, you can find information related to their system maintenance like system backup, check solutions to problem, etc. Click Back button to go back.
- From the Action Center dialog box displayed, click Change Action Center settings in the left-hand side of the screen.
- From the Change Action Center settings dialog box, select the security and maintenance messages you want to see.
- When finish, click OK and close the Action Center dialog box.
To disable the Action Center
- Right-click on empty space on the System Tray and from the menu pop-up, click Properties.
- From the System Icons dialog box displayed, you can choose to turn on or off the Action Center.
- Click the Customize notification icons link to select the behavior of other tray notifications individually.
- When finish, click OK.

In Windows 7, the Action Center informs you about various security and maintenance tasks. It displays a flag icon in the notification area and shows you balloon tooltips when Windows requires some action from you such as when updates need to be installed, files need to be backed up, or when you do not have an antivirus software working. You can turn off these notifications manually however, if you wish to turn them via the registry so that every time you install Windows, it does not nag you, here’s how to do it.
The notifications that Action Center shows can be useful for novice users but to power users, they can be extremely annoying. To disable them manually, you have to open the Action Center via the tray icon and click several links to turn off each notification individually. I made a registry tweak to disable all kinds of notifications shown in the Action Center and would like to share it with you, so that when you perform a fresh installation of Windows, you can automate this by simply merging the file into the Registry.
Action Center stores its settings in the Registry, separately for each user. You will find settings related to your user account under the following Registry key

This tweak is much better for me than dealing with checkboxes for all users to disable unnecessary notifications from Action Center.

In Windows 7 it can get annoying seeing the Action Center icon pop up notifications every time you turn on your computer. Today we will look at changing the messages that it displays and even completely disabling it. New in Windows 7 is the Action Center which is an activity center that allows you to control system notifications. This is definitely an improvement to previous versions so you can control the amount of annoying messages the OS pops up from the taskbar. To get to Action Center select it from Control Panel or simply type «action center» (no quotes) into the search box in the Start Menu. By default the Action Center notification icon will be displayed in the taskbar and display messages about security and maintenance settings.
While in Action Center you can view which settings are enabled or not and change them by clicking the different hyperlinks.
Click on Change Action Center settings to turn messages on or off.
If you are an experienced user and don’t care to see the Action Center icon in the taskbar at all, here is how we disable it. Click on Start and go to Control Panel.
Now in Control Panel select All Control Panel Items and then click on System Icons.
The Turn system icons on or off window will open and here you change Action Center to Off. Notice you can also turn other system icons on or off as well.
Also if you click on Customize notification icons in the screen above you can select the behavior of other tray notifications individually.
If you are new to computers to Windows 7 you might not want to disable the Action Center entirely until you get a better feel for it. With these tips you can definitely control the amount of notifications that pop up.
