Install
The application can be downloaded from https://get.delta.chat.
Here you’ll find binary releases for all supported platforms.
See below for platform specific instructions. If you run into any
problems please consult the Troubleshooting section below.
Linux
Flatpak
The primary distribution-independent way to install is to use the
flatpak build.
This is maintained in its own
repository. However, a
pre-built binary can be downloaded and installed from
Flathub which
also has a setup guide for many Linux platforms.
Arch Linux
Run pacman -S deltachat-desktop to install Delta Chat Desktop on Arch Linux.
Alternatively, build deltachat-desktop-git package from Arch User Repository.
WARNING: Currently the AUR package compiles from latest master.
This can be more recent as the latest release, introduce new features
but also new bugs.
If you have a AUR helper like yay or paru installed, you can install it
by running yay -S deltachat-desktop-git and following the instruction
in your terminal.
Otherwise you can still do it manually:

Simply install the .dmg file as you do it with all other software on Mac.

You can find the downloads for windows on https://get.delta.chat.
However, we recommend using the release from Microsoft Store,
because there you get automatic updates.
From Source
⚠ This is mostly for development purposes, this won’t install/integrate deltachat into your system.
So unless you know what you are doing, we recommend to stick to the methods above if possible.

-wmeans workspace root package, with this you don’t need to have your current working directory at the repo-root to run those scripts.
For development with local deltachat core read docs/UPDATE_CORE.md.
Troubleshooting
- This module builds on top of
deltachat core,
which in turn has external dependencies. The instructions below assume a Linux system (e.g. Ubuntu 18.10). - Read the error, maybe it already tells you what you need to do. If not feel free to file an issue in this github repo.
- Make sure that your nodejs version is
20.0.0or newer. - If you still get errors look at the instructions in
docs/UPDATE_CORE.mdto set things up or write an issue.
Configuration and Databases
The configuration files and database are stored at application-config’s default file paths.
Each database is a SQLite file that represents the account for a given email address.

Представляю вашему вниманию проект DeltaChat
Delta Chat — свободный децентрализованный мессенджер для Android, iOS, Linux, Mac, функционирующий поверх древнейшего стека протоколов E-mail. Версия для Windows находится в разработке.
Из ключевых особенностей DeltaChat стоить выделить следующие:
- у Delta Chat нет единого сервера или инфраструктуры — приложение подключается к любому серверу электронной почты, выбранному вами;
- распределённая связь с другими доменами осуществляется через федерации почтовых серверов;
- адресатом может быть любой владелец электронной почты, даже если он пока не установил себе Delta Chat;
- при наличии возможности для сквозного шифрования переписки применяется механизм Autocrypt, сообщения шифруются автоматически (а пользователю показывается замочек);
- отображение отметок о прочтении и статусе доставки и быстрые уведомления функционируют благодаря протоколу Push-IMAP;
- для защиты от спама по умолчанию отображаются сообщения только из списка контактов;
- полностью открытый исходный код приложения под лицензией GPLv3 и протоколы, основанные на стандартах

FAQ
Поддерживает ли Delta Chat изображения, видео и другие вложения?
Да. Кроме обычного текста, все вложения электронной почты отображаются в виде отдельных сообщений. Исходящие сообщения будут получать вложения по мере необходимости автоматически.
Поддерживает ли Delta Chat HTML-письма?
Да. Если входящей электронной почте не хватает простой текстовой части, мы конвертируем HTML-письма в обычный текст сами. Исходящие сообщения всегда используют обычный текст.
Поддерживает ли Delta Chat сквозное шифрование?
Да. Delta Chat реализует стандарт Autocrypt уровня 1 и может таким образом обеспечить сквозное E2E-шифрование сообщений и с помощью других приложений с поддержкой Autocrypt.
Что мне нужно сделать, чтобы активировать сквозное шифрование?
Ничего.
Приложения Delta Chat (и другие Autocrypt-совместимые приложения электронной почты) обмениваются ключами, необходимыми для сквозного шифрования автоматически в тот момент, как только отправляются первые сообщения. После этого все последующие сообщения автоматически шифруются. Если один из партнеров чата использует приложение электронной почты не совместимое с Autocrypt сообщения не шифруются до тех пор, пока не будет снова доступно приложение, совместимое с Autocrypt.
Если вы хотите деактивировать сквозное шифрование, используйте соответствующую настройку в разделе «Настройки / Дополнительные настройки».
Как проверить шифрование?
Если рядом с сообщением отображается небольшой замок, это означает, что сообщение зашифровано сквозным шифрованием и отправлено от данного отправителя, и ваш ответ будет также защищен сквозным E2E-шифрованием.
Если замок не отображается, то сообщение защищено только транспортным уровнем шифрования от приложения до почтового сервера. так как вы или отправитель отключили сквозное шифрование или отправитель использует приложение, которое не поддерживает сквозное шифрование.
Как я могу проверить отправителя?
В профиле пользователя отображается дополнительная информация:
Вы можете нажать «QR Invite code» на Android, а затем использовать кнопку «scan QR-code” на другом устройстве для сканирования этого кода. Если оба устройства подключены к сети, они создадут чат-канал друг с другом (если он еще не существует), а ключи шифрования будут проверены.
Для диагностики сквозного шифрования Delta Chat показывает два отпечатка ключей. Если они одинаковы на вашем устройстве и устройстве вашего партнера по чату, то соединение безопасно.

Delta Chat is a reliable, decentralized and secure messaging app, available for mobile and desktop platforms.

It’s Software Privacy Day again, the day meant to encourage users everywhere to spare a thought about where their data actually goes when it’s posted on, over, or through the Internet. One of the cottage industries around Internet communication that seems to ebb and flow in popularity is the venerable chat application. People use chat applications for all manner of conversations, and most people don’t think about what bots are recording and monitoring what’s being said, whether it’s to effectively target ads or just to build a profile for future use. This makes chat applications particularly vulnerable to poor privacy practices, but luckily there are several open source, privacy-focused apps out there, including Signal, Rocket.Chat, and Mattermost. I’ve run Mattermost and Rocket.Chat, and I use Signal, but the application I’m most excited about is Delta Chat, the chat service that’s so hands-off it doesn’t even use chat servers. Instead, Delta Chat uses the most massive and diverse open messaging system you already use yourself. It uses email to send and receive messages through a chat application, and it features end-to-end encryption with Autocrypt.
Install Delta Chat
Delta Chat uses standard email protocol as its back end, but to you and me as mere users, it appears and acts exactly like a chat application. That means you need to install the open source Delta Chat app.
On Linux, you can install Delta Chat as a Flatpak or from your software repository.
On macOS and Windows, download an installer from delta.chat/downloads.
On Android, you can install Delta Chat from the Play Store or the open source F-droid repository.
On iOS, install Delta Chat from the App Store.
Because Delta Chat uses email for message delivery, you can also receive messages to your inbox if you’re away from your chat app. Yes, you can use Delta Chat even without having Delta Chat installed!
Configure Delta Chat
When you first launch Delta Chat, you must log in to your email account. This tends to be the hardest part about Delta Chat because it requires you to either know details about your email server or else to create an «app password» in your email provider’s security settings.
If you’re running your own server and you have everything configured as the usual defaults (port 993 for incoming IMAP, port 465 for outgoing SMTP, SSL/TLS enabled), then you can probably just type in your email address and your password and continue.
If you’re running your own server but you have custom settings, then click the Advanced button and enter your settings. You may need to do this if you’re using an unusual subdomain to denote your mail server, or a custom port, or a complex login and password configuration.
If you’re using an email provider like Gmail, Fastmail, Yahoo, or similar, then you must create an app password so you can login to your account through Delta Chat instead of a web browser. Many email providers restrict login in order to avoid endless bots and scripts making attempts to brute force their ways into people’s accounts, so to your provider, Delta Chat looks a lot like a bot. When you grant Delta Chat special permissions, you’re alerting your email provider that lots of short messages from a remote app is expected behavior.
Each email provider has a different way of providing app passwords, but Fastmail (in my opinion) makes it the easiest:
- Navigate to Settings
- Click Passwords & Security
- Next to Third-party apps, click the Add button
Verify your password, and create a new app password. Use the password you create to login to Delta Chat.
Chatting with Delta Chat
Once you’ve gotten past the hurdle of logging in, the rest is easy. Because Delta Chat just uses email, you can add friends by email address rather than by a chat application username or phone number. You can technically add any email address to Delta Chat. It is, after all, just an email app with a very specific use case. It’s polite to tell your friend about Delta Chat, though, rather than expect them to carry out a casual chat with you through their email client.
The application, whether you’re running it on your phone or your computer, looks exactly like you’d expect a chat application to look. You can initiate chats, send messages, and hang out with friends over encrypted text.

Delta Chat is decentralized, fully encrypted, and relies on a proven infrastructure. Thanks to Delta Chat, you get to choose what servers sit between you and your contacts, and you can communicate in private. There’s no complex server to install, no hardware to maintain. It’s a simple solution to what seems like a complex problem, and it’s open source. There’s every reason to try it, especially on Software Privacy Day.
