Summary

  • There’s no need for Guest Additions to copy text between host and guest machines in VirtualBox.
  • To enable copying and pasting, power off the virtual machine, then go to Settings > General > Advanced. Set Shared Clipboard to «Bidirectional» and save your changes.
  • Enable Drag’n’Drop, too, if you want to make transferring files between machines easier.

If you use VirtualBox to run different operating systems on your computer, you may be wondering how to copy text from your host machine into the guest machine and vice versa. The feature might appear hidden, but we’ll show you where to find it.

Does Clipboard Sharing Require VirtualBox Guest Additions?

No, you don’t need Guest Additions just to copy and paste between guest and host machines. VirtualBox Guest Additions does provide several useful features, such as shared folders and improved performance, and we do recommend installing the Guest Additions. However, to enable copying text between the host machine and guest machine, you must change a setting in VirtualBox for the virtual machine.

How to Enable Copying and Pasting Between Machines in VirtualBox

To enable copying text between the host and guest machines, first make sure the virtual machine for which you want to enable the setting is powered off. It must be fully powered off and not in a saved state or you’ll get an error message when trying to do this. If your virtual machine is in a saved state, open it up and power down properly to make sure your data is saved.

Then, select the virtual machine in the list in the VirtualBox Manager (if it’s not already selected) and click «Settings» with a yellow cog icon on the toolbar.

In the Settings dialog box, make sure «General» is selected in the left pane. On the right, select the «Advanced» tab.

Click the Shared Clipboard drop-down list and select «Bidirectional.» This will allow you to copy text in both directions, from the host to the guest and vice versa.

If you want to make sure nothing ever gets accidentally pasted from the guest into the host machine, you can instead select «Host to Guest» or, for vice versa, «Guest to Host.»

Click OK to accept the change and close the dialog box.

You can also select Bidirectional from the Drag’n’Drop drop-down list. This allows you to drag and drop files between the host and guest machines. If you frequently copy files between machines, this will make the process simpler.

Here’s something many of you probably already know. VirtualBox has a feature that allows you to copy and paste between the host machine and the guest machine or vice versa. If you don’t already know, this brief tutorial is going to show you how to enable it when using VirtualBox virtualization software.

Another thing you probably already know is when you first install VirtualBox guest machine, the guest machine will not automatically integrate with the host. That means taking advantage of the host resources and improved performance. To allow the integration, you must install VirtualBox guest additions.

Installing the guest additions software will also not automatically allow you to copy and paste between machines. To enable that you must allow bidirectional shared clipboard on each machine.

Without the shared clipboard feature enabled, you won’t be able to copy and paste between the host and the guest machines. This feature will come in handy especially if you’ll be enter a lot of text or data into the guest machine from the host.

Instead of manually typing each character or enter data manually, you could simply select the text from the host and paste it into the guest machine and vice versa.

To enable it, open VirtualBox and select the guest machine, then click the settings button or press Ctrl + S on your keyboard.

Next, on the General page, select Advanced tab and make sure bidirectional is selected for Shared Clipboard as well as Drag’n’Drop options.

That’s it! When you log back into the guest machine, you should be able to copy text from the host machine to the guest easily. The Drag’n’Drop option lets you select a whole data file from the host to the guest or vice versa.

Enjoy! And please keep coming back for more tutorials.

In this article, we will be learning how to perform copy paste in VirtualBox from Host Operating System to Guest Operating System. We will be discussing two simplest approach to copy paste files in VirtualBox.

Background: Why to use Virtual Box?

If you are Developer, Software Tester or Software Engineer who like to Taste latest flavor of Software, you must be familiar with Virtual Box. Virtual Box is one of the most popular virtualization software. VirtualBox is also used mostly due to software compatibility issues. Suppose, your organization uses some software that is available only on Windows, but you use Mac or Linux as your primary Operating System. You can install Windows on VirtualBox and can access that app from your Mac or Linux machine.

Similarly, if you are student, you have projects related to Linux or your semester has subject on Linux, You can download any of preferred Linux Distributions and install it inside VirtualBox on your Mac or Windows. This way, you wont need to know the complicated process of formatting and installing Operating system in Physical Machine and meanwhile your data is safe and you can use your preferred and licensed Operating system as usual.

One more reason why VirtualBox is popular because of its GPL License and supported by Oracle Corporation.

What is the environment we will be using in this guide?

We expect you already have installed VirtualBox Manager in your Computer and installed any Guest Operating System. Below is the environment we will be using to demonstrate this tutorial. This guide will be pretty similar on different Host Operating systems. Only Native Operating System based process at the setup will be different respective of OS.

Host Operating System: Windows 10 Insider Preview Build 21382
Guest Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit
Virtual Box Version: Virtual Box 6.1.22

You can check the complete list of operating system which we have compiled few years ago.

1. Copy Paste VirtualBox Feature – Shared Clipboard

VirtualBox offers Copy/Paste feature between Guest and Host OS but we have very hard time making it work. Most of people has similar complaint on community. Lets see how you can enable this feature, but We are not including this in our working solution.

What is Clipboard?

As we know, the temporary place in Computer Memory (RAM) where all copied text, files, media and any other type of data is stored to transfer between supported applications is called Clipboard.

What is Shared Clipboard?

When Clipboard is shared across devices, it is called Shared Clipboard. In this process, data is stored in Network/Internet/Cloud in most of applications. However, as VirtualBox is a device that resides inside Host Operating system, so we do not need to save Clipboard somewhere else. We can simply Copy in Host OS and can Paste in Guest OS or vise-versa in VirtualBox.

How to enable Shared Clipboard in VirtualBox?

To enable copy paste in VirtualBox, we can simple enable Shared Clipboard feature. Follow below steps to enable Shared Clipboard.

  1. When Machine is powered off, Click on Settings button of Virtual Machine from VirtualBox Application.
  2. In the General section of Settings, click on Advanced tab of settings.
  3. Click on Shared Clipboard dropdown and change it’s setting to Bidirectional.

At lease, let’s say, it is the idle process supposed to happen if we enable this setting. But most of the time, this doesn’t work and we will share a different guide on how to make Bidirectional Clipboard sharing work at sometimes later.

Note: Using this method, we can copy paste clipboard text but not files or folders. For Example, if you took screenshot inside Guest OS, you can paste the same in Host OS.

2. Drag’n’Drop – Copy Paste Files between VirtualBox & Host OS using Drag and Drop Feature.

This is another native feature provided by VirtualBox. It is as simple as enabling Shared Clipboard and option is available just next to Shared Clipboard.

How to Enable Drag and Drop feature in VirtualBox?

We can enable Drag’n’Drop feature in VirtualBox by following simple steps below.

  1. When Machine is powered off, Click on Settings button of Virtual Machine from VirtualBox Application.
  2. In the General section of Settings, click on Advanced tab of settings.
  3. Click on Drag’n’Drop dropdown and change it’s setting to Bidirectional.

How to Copy Paste Files between Host and Guest OS using Drag’n’Drop feature?

If you are using Machine with single display (Only one Monitor), you have do some workaround for this process to work.

  1. If you are using Multiple Monitors, you can just Click File and Drag it to required place. It will be just like Drag and Drop process in different Folders and process like Drag & Drop support on Modern File Uploaders in different applications that work on Browsers.
  2. If you are using single Monitor/Display, you have to resize the VirtualBox and Exit Full Screen mode. You can simply click the Restore button when you are on Full Screen mode of VirtualBox. You can use the alternative Keyboard short-cut for this Operation also. This is Host+F (Right Ctrl + F) if you have not modified default Host Key. To learn about mapping Key to different functionality on Windows, refer to this article.
  3. Simply Drag and Drop Files from Host to Guest or Guest to Host OS.

3. Shared Folder concept – Copy Paste in VirtualBox

Another approach that works just fine is Shared Folder concept.

What are Shared Folders in VirtualBox?

Shared Folders are those folders which are mounted as Drives in Guest OS. These are basically Folders or Drives on Host Operating System. We can simply mount them on Guest OS and all the content of these folders will be available to Guest OS as well. You can copy/paste files there. Even you can work on these files and save. These will be saved on Host OS and you can work on them from Host Operating System as well. This gives flexibility to install software and tools Guest OS and also saves space.

How to Enable/Use Shared Folders in VirtualBox?

Lets understand this on step by step procedure as below.

  1. Open VirtualBox Manager and Click on the setting of Machine you want to share Folders with.
  2. Click on Shared Folder section in the left panel.
  3. Click on the Add New Shared Folder icon on the right side.
  4. Select your Folder from Host OS, check Auto Mount so it is automatically available When Guest OS boots in Virtual Machine.

Let’s have a look at below screenshots.

Steps to Enable Shared Folders for Copy Paste in VirtualBox

Once you are inside Guest OS and can see the Shared Folders as Mounted Drives, you can perform copy/paste actions in those folders as normal OS procedure.

Earlier, this process has to be done manually by sharing Folder from Host Operating System and then adding that Shared Folder location as Network Location using Add Shortcut option in Guest OS. But, in current version it is quite easy and anyone can simply follow the steps to achieve the purpose.

In this guide, we have shared 3 different methods by which we can copy and paste files between Host Operating System and Guest Operating System or vice-versa on VirtualBox Machines. If you have other workaround for copy paste in VirtualBox or have difficulty enabling this, let us know via comments.

I’m on Windows 10, and I’m going to be using VirtualBox with Linux Ubuntu version 16. I’m going to show you something that I found when I was working through it because many of the tutorials that I discovered didn’t quite work properly. That is what I want to walk through here.

What I’m proposing to do is I want the ability if I’m on some Windows site, such as some kind of browser here, I want to be able to simply copy something in that browser and I want to paste it into my virtual machine.

I’m going to start one of these up, it doesn’t really matter which one that I go with, but I’m going to start up the virtual machine and you’ll see by default this may not work for you. If you’re watching this video, I’m assuming that is the case.

Like I mentioned, many of the tutorials that I found online were missing a few steps, which is why I created this video. Let’s open up the virtual machine here with Ubuntu. I’m going to show you first that this doesn’t work by default.

I copied something already, so now let’s just try to paste it in. You saw I copied this, and now if I go into that active virtual machine, if I try to case this it’s not going to work. That’s perfectly fine. That’s what we’re going to work through. Exactly how we can make this work.

If I right-click here you can see paste isn’t activated.

Many of the tutorials that I’ve seen said to do something like this, where you exit out of the virtual machine, then inside of the settings you go here and click on advanced. Click on share to clipboard, bi-directional, drag and drop bi-directional. They said that’s all you have to do, and it will work for you.

Let’s just test out that theory right here. If this works like it has on my other systems and on my other VirtualBox snapshots, this will not actually allow us to copy and paste. There is a very important next step, that can be very tricky.

I’ve seen all kinds of different guides that gave different recommendations but they did not work. I’m going to open this up again, we will try to paste into the browser once again and see if that bi-directional rule worked.

Now, if I come here you can see paste still is not working. The reason for this is because we need to install guest additions.

The way that you can do that is close your VirtualBox and come back to settings. If you come here and click on storage. Where it says Storage, IDE, Secondary Master, click on [Optical Drive] Empty, and then click on choose disk image.

From there, you can see that we have this have VBoxGuestAdditions right here, so I’m going to click on this, and click open.

Now you can see that no longer says empty. What we’ve done here is we’ve taken the VirtualBox GuestAdditions which this gives us some additional tooling, specifically it gives us the ability to copy and paste. It enables its bi-directional copy and paste.

Now, if I click start, this is going to allow us to run that. I’m going to VirtualBox, and even though we don’t actually have a CD drive in this is going to mimic that in our VirtualBox. It’s going to be like we had a Linux computer here, we put in a CD, and we’re going to install from that CD.

I’m going to run this, and I will say since I have not tested this out on this machine, that we might need to do some debugging here on the fly. When I originally had to get this working on a different machine, I ran into a number of bugs. We’re going to see how it works.

If you come here, you can see that now we have this little disc. It’s VBOXADDITIONS gets_5.16_110634. I’m going to right-click on this, and it’s going to open up this directory.

In order to run this, just click on the top here where it says Run Software. Click on run, then it’s and ask you for your password for your VirtualBox, click on authenticate, and then it’s going to install.

This may or may not work. I have had some issues right here you can see it says failed to set up service vboxad. please check the log file and then hit return. That’s going to close it out. Let’s just do a quick test because I have had a few times where this actually did work, but it gave that little error message.

I’m going to reboot the system. Let’s open up the terminal, you can just type reboot, and that is going restart the entire VirtualBox. We’re just going to do a quick check here to make sure that that is not working.

Okay, we are back up. Let’s open up the browser here really quick, go back to Windows, and just copy this. Then switch back to our VirtualBox. Click here, and you can see it’s actually working.

That is one spot where I kept on getting stuck. I saw that little error message, and that did not give a clear indicator to say that it was working. As you can see, we do have the ability to copy and paste.

That is how I personally work through the bug. Simply clicking on the change for the bi-directional copy-paste is not enough, you also have to have the VirtualBoxAddition. Those of the guest additions that allow that to work. That is how I personally was able to get copy and paste working on this machine.
