In this article, we take a look at the common fix for getting Cisco ASDM running when you run into the “This app can’t run on your PC” error message. This error is somewhat normal to run into these days to due changes in the Windows operating system.
Introduction
After all these years, Cisco managing software for the Adaptive Security Appliances (“ASA”) is still built upon Java, and getting Java to run properly in 2022 isn’t always straightforward.
Although Cisco has released a newer OS for their firewalls called Firepower Threat Defense (“FTD”) the older ASA OS is still the king when it comes to solutions such as Remote Access VPN, with new features still being added to this day,
If you are having trouble running Java at all on your PC due to Java version mismatch or other general “Windows errors”, please check out the following article to see if it can help you out: Running ASDM from an ASA when Java is being picky.
Prerequisite — install a newer Java version
First off, make sure to download the latest version of Java from their website. As long as your ASA is running somewhat newer software, the latest version of Java should work fine.
When you have installed Java on your PC, continue down below to install the Cisco ASDM launcher and apply the fix needed to get the software up and running.
Installing and fixing the ASDM Launcher
To install the ASDM Launcher, navigate to your ASAs administrator web interface similar to this link: https://10.1.1.254/admin and you’ll be redirected to the correct page.
Click on “Install ASDM Launcher” and sign in using an Administrator account.
on a new W10 machine and tracked the issue down to the newer W10 builds silently swapping the Windows Scripting Host path for “compatibility” which causes that compatibility error.
If you go into Start > Cisco ASDM-IDM Launcher > right click the launcher and go to More > Open file location
Then you’ll be looking at the shortcut to the ASDM launcher, right click it and go to Properties and look at the Target. You’ll see a long path to wscript.exe – change this to C:\Windows\System32\wscript.exe (leave the invisible.vbs run.bat on the end as these scripts are used to open up ASDM). After changing this I was able to launch ASDM fine.

Windows
Windows 10.
This app can’t run on your PC
To find a version for your PC, check with the software publisher.
Cisco ASDM-IDM Launcher.
C:\Windows\system32\wscript.exe invisible.vbs run.bat
Linux
ASDM 7.18 ending support for Java Web Launch—Starting with ASDM 7.18, ASDM will no longer support Java Web Start due to Oracle’s end of support for JRE 8 and Java Network Launching Protocol (JNLP). You will have to install the ASDM Launcher to launch ASDM.
JNLPException[category: Download Error : Exception: java.io.FileNotFoundException: https://192.168.1.1/admin/public/asdm.jnlp : LaunchDesc: null

/admin/dm-launcher.msi
/admin/dm-launcher.dmg
https://williamlieurance.com/cisco-asdm-718-719-linux/
Fedora
Качаем /admin/dm-launcher.dmg.
dnf install dmg2img apfs-fuse
dmg2img -l dm-launcher.dmg
dmg2img v1.6.5 (c) vu1tur (to@vu1tur.eu.org) dm-launcher.dmg --> (partition list) partition 0: Protective Master Boot Record (MBR : 0) partition 1: GPT Header (Primary GPT Header : 1) partition 2: GPT Partition Data (Primary GPT Table : 2) partition 3: (Apple_Free : 3) partition 4: disk image (Apple_APFS : 4) partition 5: (Apple_Free : 5) partition 6: GPT Partition Data (Backup GPT Table : 6) partition 7: GPT Header (Backup GPT Header : 7)

mkdir asdm-img
sudo mount -t apfs -o loop dm-launcher.img ./asdm-img
ls 'asdm-img/root/Cisco ASDM-IDM.app/Contents/Resources/Java/'
AC_HS.PEM cert.PEM demo dm-launcher.jar jploader.jar jre lzma.jar retroweaver-rt-2.0.jar
ls 'asdm-img/root/Cisco ASDM-IDM.app/Contents/Resources/Java/jre'

Пример того как запускать пакет можно посмотреть в ./asdm-img/root/Cisco ASDM-IDM.app/Contents/MacOS/dm-launcher.sh.
