Starting in Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Microsoft replaced the classic desktop Sticky Notes app with a Universal app. For many users, the classic Desktop app is the more preferable option. It works faster, starts faster and has no Cortana integration. If you want to get the Classic Sticky Notes app in Windows 10, then read on.
With Windows 10 Anniversary Update, Microsoft discontinued the classic Desktop app «Sticky Notes». Now, its place is taken by a new app with the same name. The new Sticky Notes app is a Universal (UWP) app, which comes with different features but as is Microsoft’s way of doing things, it doesn’t include all the features of the classic app. For example, the new app lets you create Cortana reminders from your notes. You can type a phone number and have it recognize it, and recognize URLs too which you can open in Edge. You can create check lists and use it with Windows Ink. Starting in version 3.0, the modern Sticky Notes app includes a dark theme, the ability to sync notes between your devices, and tons of other new features.
However, a lot of users are not happy with this new change. Many prefer the good old classic Sticky Notes app. It consumes notably less system resources. It starts immediately and works much faster. The performance difference is especially visible on less powerful hardware like Atom and Celeron CPUs. The notes themselves are also a bit smaller, so users like their compact appearance more.
The old app does not depend on Cortana and Windows Ink, which also makes it useful for privacy-conscious people.
Starting in Windows 10 build 17763, version 1809 «October 2018 Update», the classic Sticky Notes app has stopped working. Here is a new package that resolves the issue. Thanks to the guys «bobbynetteuh» and «WildByDesign«, MDL, for their research.
Get Old Classic Sticky Notes for Windows 10
- Download the installer from this website: Download Classic Sticky Notes for Windows 10
- Run the installer.
- Just follow the instructions on the screen. The installer will extract all the necessary files quickly and create a shortcut on the desktop and in the Start menu.
- The Desktop shortcut is optional, you can choose to not create it.
That’s it.

The package supports both Windows 10 32-bit and Windows 10 64-bit. It comes with almost the full set of MUI files, so it will be in your native language out-of-the-box. The following locale list is supported:

You can uninstall the app any time from Settings — Apps and features:
The installer is built using genuine files from Windows 10. They are not modified and have not been tampered with. The installer doesn’t modify any file or the Registry on your computer. The only reason I made it was to install the required MUI files in their proper location. Only the language applicable to your OS will be installed, so you will not get extra MUI files that you do not need.

For those of you who haven’t been involved in any Windows 10 LTSB/LTSC builds, you may not be aware that we some time ago identified the Sticky Notes applet as being quite possibly the only “potentially useful in a corporate environment” component missing from LTSB 2016 and now LTSC 2019 (as compared to “normal” Windows 10 Enterprise). That is because Microsoft converted it from a regular desktop app to a UWP (Metro/Modern/Store) app as of (I think) Build 1607, which coincides with LTSB 2016, and did not include the old version in LTSB (as it thankfully did in the case of Calculator). Luckily, the desktop (classic) Sticky Notes applet from previous Windows 10 builds continued to work in LTSB 2016 and only need to be copied (StikyNot.exe) along with its MUI file(s) (StikyNot.exe.mui for each installed language) from an older build to LTSB 2016.
However, this stopped working in LTSC 2019 (which corresponds to Build 1809), and it turned out to be due to an update in a system DLL (dui70.dll) in 1809. The WinAero folks packaged a new “Classic Sticky Notes v1.1” that solves the issue by also including a copy of an older version of the DLL. This means you can no longer place StikyNot.exe in System32 (you don’t want to replace the current dui70.dll) and should instead let the installer provided by WinAero perform the installation to a different location, which will include all the necessary MUIs for your system plus the older DLL in question (and its MUIs). You should therefore add any Language Packs you’re planning to install prior to this installation.
Suggestion: whether it turns out to be necessary or not, I recommend adding an empty file called “StikyNot.exe.local” to the installation folder (wherever StikyNot.exe is located) to help ensure that the older dui70.dll will be used by the program under all circumstances, regardless of whether the current dui70.dll is already in memory in use by another app (RDS, for one, sometimes does funky things with DLL sharing). It’s probably unnecessary, but it certainly can’t hurt.

В Windows 11 и 10 присутствует встроенное полезное приложение — «Записки», позволяющее создавать заметки на рабочем столе Windows 10, хранить их, синхронизировать с другими устройствами, не только Windows, но и Android, iPhone или Mac.
В этом обзоре подробно о функциях приложения «Записки», работе с заметками на рабочем столе и дополнительных нюансах, которые могут оказаться полезными в контексте рассматриваемой темы. Обновление: появилась новая версия приложения Sticky Notes (Записки), являющаяся частью OneNote.
Как было отмечено выше, приложение «Записки» является встроенным в Windows 11/10, но, если вы не можете найти его в меню Пуск или через поиск на панели задач, возможно оно было удалено. Чтобы скачать заметки для рабочего стола Windows 10 от Microsoft, используйте официальный магазин Microsoft Store, в нём приложение называется Microsoft Sticky Notes.
Использование заметок на рабочем столе с помощью приложения «Записки»
Чтобы начать пользоваться встроенными заметками Windows 11/10, какие-либо особенные навыки не потребуются, достаточно будет сделать одно из:
- Запустить приложение «Записки» и создать новую заметку на рабочем столе: можно использовать простое форматирование текста, добавление изображений.
- Нажать правой кнопкой мыши по значку приложения «Записки» в меню «Пуск» или, к примеру, на панели задач, если вы решите закрепить значок там (через раздел «Дополнительно» в контекстном меню), и выбрать один из пунктов «Создать заметку», «Список заметок» (показывает одно окно, в котором собраны все ваши заметки), «Показать все заметки» (все заметки отображаются по отдельности на рабочем столе).
Теперь о некоторых базовых функциях и особенностях работы заметок:
- При закрытии заметки она не удаляется, а просто убирается с рабочего стола и остаётся доступной в списке заметок.
- Удаление заметки можно выполнить в её меню. Там же можно открыть список всех заметок или изменить цвет заметки со стандартного жёлтого на один из дополнительных 6 цветов.
- При редактировании заметок работают стандартные сочетания клавиш: вставка и копирование (в том числе для изображений), изменение стиля текста (например, Ctrl+B для полужирного), отмена последнего действия (Ctrl+Z). А для удаления активной заметки можно использовать Ctrl+D.
- При уменьшении размера заметки на рабочем столе (с помощью мыши), второстепенные элементы, такие как фото, скрываются, как на скриншоте ниже.
- Если у вас много заметок, то открыв список заметок (например, через контекстное меню ярлыка приложения «Записки»), вы сможете легко выполнить поиск по ним.
Как итог, в случаях, когда нужно что-то быстро записать и не потерять: номер телефона или внезапно пришедшую мысль или другую информацию, встроенные записи Windows 10 — могут быть отличным решением для этой цели.
Синхронизация и работа с записками Windows на других устройствах
Если вам требуется иметь доступ к заметкам на рабочем столе Windows 11/10 не на одном компьютере или ноутбуке, но и на других устройствах, в том числе Android и iPhone, прежде всего убедитесь, что в настройках приложения «Записки» используется ваша учётная запись Майкрософт — это необходимо для синхронизации.

We are taking our first step with OneNote on Windows as the entry point for this preview experience. Soon, you’ll be able to try the new Sticky Notes app from the Windows Start menu and by toggling over from the existing Microsoft Sticky Notes app on Windows.

Have you ever wished to capture a thought or idea in a meeting or conversation, but it passed too quickly? Do you need an easier way to pick up where you left off with notetaking when switching between tasks? These are the kinds of issues that we aim to help you solve with the new Sticky Notes app, while keeping things simple and intuitive.
- To launch the new Sticky Notes app, open the OneNote app on Windows and select the Sticky Notes button.
NOTE: After launching the new Sticky Notes app, you can pin it to the taskbar. You can also press the Win + Alt + S keys to launch the app anytime.

- When a presentation is shared in a Teams meeting, take screenshots of important slides with a single click, while staying focused on the meeting.
- For a recurring meeting, take notes on the same page and your past notes will automatically rise to the top when you open the new Sticky Notes app during the next instance of the meeting series.
- While watching an educational YouTube video or reading an article, capture important sections and your previous notes will rise to the top in the app when you return to the same website later.
- When planning a trip, take notes and screenshots of potential destinations. The next time you open your notes, click the source link to go back to the website in question for more details or to complete your booking.
- Pin the new Sticky Notes app to your taskbar for easy access in the future—no need to launch OneNote.
- If you’re already a signed in Sticky Notes user, all your existing notes will appear in the new app.
- Sign in to your Microsoft 365 account to sync your notes across your devices.
The new Sticky Notes app is available to Current Channel (Preview) users running OneNote on Windows Version 2402 (Build 17328.20000) or later.
Features are released over some time to ensure things are working smoothly. We highlight features that you may not have because they’re slowly releasing to larger numbers of Insiders. Sometimes we remove elements to further improve them based on your feedback. Though this is rare, we also reserve the option to pull a feature entirely out of the product, even if you, as an Insider, have had the opportunity to try it.
