How do I fix my Xbox game bar when it’s not working?

1. Check the Game bar’s Settings

  1. Search for Xbox in the Cortana search box and click the app.
  2. Next, sign in to the Xbox app. Note that a Microsoft Account is required to sign in to the Xbox app.
  3. Click the Settings icon in the bottom left corner.
  4. Select Game DVR.
  5. Now, you can select Record game clips and screenshots using Game DVR option. If that option is off, click it to switch it back on.
  6. Close the Xbox app and then restart Windows.
  7. Press the Windows key + G again to open the Game bar.

It might be the case that the Game Bar Record game clips and screenshots setting is switched off in Windows 10.

Then the Game Bar isn’t going to open when you press its hotkey. So, you can check that option as described above.

2. Edit the Registry

  1. Press Windows + R, type regedit, and click OK.
  2. Next, browse to the path below: HKEY_CURRENT_USER/SOFTWARE/Microsoft/Windows/CurrentVersion/GameDVR
  3. Then, right-click the AppCaptureEnabled DWORD and select Modify.
  4. If the DWORD’s value is 0, enter 1 in the Value data text box.
  5. Now, navigate to GameConfigStore.
Windows 10 Game bar not working in fullscreen

  6. Right-click the GameDVR_Enabled DWORD and select Modify from the context menu to open the window below.
  7. Enter 1 in the Value data text box if its current value is 0.
  8. Restart Windows and press the Game bar hotkey.

You can also switch the Game Bar via the registry.

3. Don’t Run the Games in Full-Screen Mode

Is it the case that the Game Bar is not opening when you’re running a game on full screen? The Game Bar doesn’t open in full-screen modes because most games don’t recognize the Windows key + G hotkey.

That doesn’t mean you can’t use the Game Bar’s options in full-screen mode, but the overlay UI isn’t going to open. You can still record a game with the Windows + Alt + R hotkey or take a snapshot by pressing Windows + Alt + PrtScr.

Run the game in window mode and press the Windows key + G to open the Game Bar UI.

4. Check the Xbox app’s Hotkey Settings

  1. Press the Windows + I keys.

Windows 10 N and KN versions don’t include all the media technologies and apps in more standard editions.

Several apps need Windows Media files not included in Windows 10 KN or N.

However, you can install the media-related technologies otherwise lacking in Windows 10 N with the Windows Media Feature Pack.

6. Reinstall the Xbox Game Bar through Powershell

  1. Press Windows key + S and enter powershell.
  2. Right-click Windows PowerShell from the list of results and then choose Run as administrator.
  3. When PowerShell starts, run the following command to remove Xbox Game Bar: Get-AppxPackage *xboxapp* | Remove-AppxPackage

Reinstalling a core Windows application is a slightly advanced process that involves PowerShell, but you should be able to reinstall the Xbox app without issues by following the above procedure.

After running this command, the Xbox app will be removed from your PC. You must open the Microsoft Store app and download the Xbox app again.

Once you download it, the problem with the Game bar should be entirely resolved.

  1. If you are wondering how do I enable the Game Bar on Windows 10, press Windows key + I to open Settings.
  2. Select the Gaming option.

If the problem doesn’t appear on the new account, you need to move all your files to the new account and use it instead of your old account.

9. Use third-party solutions

If you can’t fix the problem with the Game Bar, you might want to consider using third-party software.

Although the Game Bar comes preinstalled with Windows 10, it has certain limitations, and if you can’t get it to work correctly, you might want to try some other Windows 10 screen recording software.

If you’re looking for a different application to record your screen and gameplay sessions, we strongly recommend trying Icecream Screen Recorder.

This straightforward tool offers certain features that the Game Bar lacks, so feel free to try it out.

Game Bar Not Opening? Here’s how to fix it

XBOX Game Bar is a handy little feature that allows you to capture the screen, control sound on the system, and record or stream your gameplay with a push of a button. The default button to enable Game Bar is Windows + G.

If the Game Bar is disabled from Windows settings, it may not open. However, it is not the only reason Game Bar does not open. Anything from a PC failing to run the right services to corrupted system files could halt the Game Bar process from running.

To fix this, you first need to make sure that Game Bar is enabled from Windows settings. If it is enabled and you still cannot open the Game Bar overlay, you might need to perform some advanced fixes.

Why is My XBOX Game Bar Not Opening?

Windows + G automatically opens the XBOX game bar overlay. Even if you have disabled the setting, the overlay will automatically start. However, if the application is not installed in the application package itself, Game Bar will not run.

Besides this, here are a few reasons that might cause the game bar to close.

  • Game Bar disabled from settings
  • XBOX services are not running
  • Services from another application causing conflict with XBOX services
  • Incorrect registry value
  • Corrupted iFrame DLL file

Game Bar Not Opening? Here’s How to Fix It

Before we jump into the fixes, make sure that the version of Windows you are running is Windows 10 or newer. Windows 8.1 or lower does not support XBOX Game Bar. If you are on a Windows version 10 or greater but cannot open the game bar, try enabling it from Windows Settings.

Enable Game Bar

First, let us make sure that you have enabled the game bar. As previously discussed, the shortcut key will automatically start the game bar, even if you have a disabled game bar. However, there are cases where disabling it will not open the game bar.

Therefore, first, let’s check whether your game bar is enabled.

  1. Press the Windows + I key to open Settings.
  2. Go to Gaming.
  3. Select XBOX Game Bar.
    enable-xbox-game-bar-not-working

  4. Enable Open XBOX Game Bar using this button on a controller.
    open-xbox-game-bar-using-this-button-bame-bar-not-working

  5. Press Windows + G or the X button on your XBOX controller to open XBOX Game Bar

Start XBOX Services

Several XBOX services must run when you open the Game Bar. If the XBOX-related Service’s startup type is manual, it may not run automatically when you try to run Game Bar. You need to set these service startup types to automatic.

  1. Press the Windows + R key to open Run.
  2. Type services.msc and press Enter to open Services.
  3. Scroll down and select XBOX Accessory Management Service.
    xbox-accessories-management

  4. Set the Startup type to automatic. Also, if the service is not running, click on Start to ensure that the service is running.
  5. Click on Apply and then OK.

Once you enable this Service, set the startup type to automatic and the Service status to running on the following services as well.

  • XBOX Live Auth Manager
  • XBOX Live Game Save
  • XBOX Live Networking Service

Repair/Reset XBOX and XBOX Game Bar

Most pre-installed applications on Windows come with a feature to repair. The repair function scans for possible errors and bugs in the application and fixes any issues found. The same is the case for XBOX Game Bar and XBOX.

If the application is not functioning correctly, you can repair or even reset it. Repairing the application will not affect the app data, which means it won’t delete any saved information. However, resetting will set the application to its default state, and the system will reset any saved settings, configuration, and application data.

  1. Press the Windows + I key to open Settings.
  2. Navigate to Apps > Installed apps.
    open-installed-apps-gamebar-not-working

  3. Click on the three horizontal dots on XBOX Game Bar and click on Advanced Options.
    advanced-options-game-bar-not-working

  4. Scroll down to Reset and select Repair. The repair process may take a few minutes.
    repair-xbox-game-bar-not-working

  5. Once done, press Windows + G to open the XBOX Game Bar overlay.
  6. If that does not work, under Repair, click on Reset. Wait for the reset process to complete.
    reset-xbox-game-bar-not-working

  7. Now, try opening XBOX Game Bar.

Manage Background Permission

Background permission on any application manages whether the app runs in the background. If the settings are configured for the application not to run in the background, the shortcut key may not open the Game Bar.

To fix this, you will need to manage background permission.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Then, Navigate to Apps > Installed apps.
    open-installed-apps-gamebar-not-working

  3. Click on the three horizontal dots on XBOX Game Bar and click on Advanced Options.
    advanced-options-game-bar-not-working

  4. Under Background apps and permissions, make sure that the drop-down menu is either selected to Power optimized or Always.
    power-optimized-xbox-gamebar-not-working

Enable Game Bar from Application Package

Sometimes, just enabling Game Bar from Windows Settings may not work. This can happen if XBOX Game Bar is disabled from the application package. When disabled from the application package, the game bar will not open even when you press the shortcut key.

If that’s the case for you, you will need to enter a command that will enable the game bar from Powershell.

  1. Press Windows + R to open Run.
  2. Type powershell and press Ctrl + Shift + Enter to open PowerShell as Administrator.
  3. Now type the following Command. Press Enter after each command.
  4. Restart the PC once you run both commands.

The first command re-installs Game Bar, and the second command re-installs XBOX apps and services.

Clean Boot Your PC

Another reason XBOX Game Bar fails to run can be due to conflicts between Services from an application and XBOX services. These conflicts could be complications in resource usage or memory issues. No matter the reasons, you will need to end this Service to run XBOX Game Bar.

  1. Press the Windows + R key to open Run.
  2. Type msconfig and press Enter to open the System configuration.
  3. Go to the Services tab.
  4. Check Hide all Microsoft services and select Disable all.
    disable-unnecessary-services-xbox-gamebar-not-working

  5. Click on Apply and then OK.
  6. Restart your PC and see if you can run the XBOX game bar.

Change Registry Value

In the registry, you will find a particular value named Game DVR. Game DVR is responsible for recording video in the background while you are gaming. If a specific D-word value in Game DVR is disabled, XBOX Game Bar may not record your screens.

To fix this, you need to change the value from the registry editor. However, changing registry values can be risky as changing wrong values can cause the entire system to malfunction. Therefore, make sure that you backup the registry before making any changes to the registry.

  1. Press the Windows + R key to open Run.

Recording and streaming games on Windows 10 has never been easier thanks to the built-in Xbox Game Bar. It features tools for recording game activity and it’s also a great way to share footage and upload your greatest gaming achievements with the webcam and mic.

But what if it stops working? The Xbox Game Bar is, unfortunately, a little buggy. Here’s how to deal with Xbox Game Bar errors and start recording and sharing game footage once again.

Know About the Xbox Game Bar

The Xbox Game Bar in Windows 10 is part of the Xbox gaming experience on Microsoft’s desktop OS. It’s available alongside the Xbox Console Companion as a way to bring console-like gaming to Windows.

Xbox Game Bar in Windows 10

So, you get access to your Xbox gamertag, achievements (many of which are available in Windows games), and even the ability to stream games from your Xbox to Windows. Accessing the Xbox Game Bar is simple. Press the Windows key + G key to open the Xbox Game Bar on the desktop, over your game.

As mentioned, the Xbox Game Bar sits alongside the Console Companion, bringing the ability to record your gameplay to Windows without third-party software. Unfortunately, however, the Xbox Game Bar occasionally fails to work correctly. So, what can you do about this?

Typical Xbox Game Bar Issues in Windows 10

Problems you might encounter range from the Xbox Game Bar not opening when requested to video not being recorded.

Along the way, you might find that the app causes weird pop-up messages or won’t stream video.

App settings cause most issues associated with the Xbox Game Bar app. We can resolve them by disabling the app, resetting, repairing, or uninstalling, or simply tweaking the registry.

Note, however, that extreme Xbox Game Bar issues—those that refuse to be resolved in normal ways—require drastic action. Namely, a full system reset or repair.

Hopefully, it won’t get that far.

Xbox Game Bar Recording and Screenshot Errors

Trying to record videos of your gameplay, or take screenshots, and you find the Xbox Game Bar isn’t playing ball? You can encounter these four common Xbox Game Bar problems, to begin with:

  • Some games don’t allow recording. In this scenario, you won’t be able to record with the Game Bar.
  • If recording is available, but it refuses to work, try another tool. For Steam games, you can broadcast using the app, but you’ll need a third-party tool to record.
  • The Game Bar can vanish in a full-screen game. Just use the Windows key + Alt + R key combination to record. Use the same shortcut to stop.
  • Screenshots may not work using the Game Bar for similar reasons. For example, you may have some protected content on your computer (e.g. ring-fenced by DRM). Try closing this, or using a different Windows desktop screenshot tool.

Restart Windows 10 and Clean Boot Your Computer

One way to fix problems with the Xbox Game Bar is to restart Windows 10.

Click Start > Power > Restart and wait while your computer reboots. When you’ve logged back into Windows, the Xbox Game Bar should work.

Another way to fix this is to clean boot your computer. Not to be confused with booting into Safe Mode, a clean boot starts with a minimal set of drivers.

Unlike Safe Mode, you can use a clean boot to determine which app or service is causing a problem. A clean boot gives you more control over what software is running.

To perform a clean boot in Windows 10:

  1. Sign in to your computer as an administrator
  2. Click Start and type msconfig
  3. In the results, click System Configuration
  4. Find the Services tab, and check the box labeled Hide all Microsoft services
  5. Click Disable all
  6. Next, click Startup then Open Task Manager
  7. In the Startup tab here, select each item, then Disable
  8. Close task manager
  9. On the System Configuration, click Startup, then OK

To finish, reboot the computer. Try the Xbox Game Bar and see if it works as intended. If it does, disable or remove any apps installed since the Game Bar last worked correctly.

Note that misusing System Configuration can cause problems with your computer. So stick to these instructions.

Solving the Xbox Game Bar «ms-gamingoverlay link» Error

One particularly stupid Windows 10 error occurs thanks to the Xbox Game Bar. Either launching a game or the Game Bar itself results in the error message: You’ll need a new app to open this ms-gamingoverlay link.

The Xbox Game Bar ms-gamingoverlay error

This appears to be due to a problem with the Windows Store, but there is a simple fix.

  1. Press Windows key + I to launch Settings.
  2. Head to Gaming > Xbox Game Bar.
  3. Turn off the toggle below Enable Xbox Game Bar for things like recording game clips, chatting with friends, and receiving game invites.
Xbox Game Bar settings

The ms-gamingoverlay error will no longer appear. Hurrah!

The downside, however, is that you can no longer use the Xbox Game Bar.

Mixer Streaming Won’t Work

If you’re trying to stream from the Xbox Game Bar to Mixer, we’ve got bad news for you. As of October 2019, Mixer broadcasting is no longer available.

As there isn’t much information about this online beyond Microsoft’s Game Bar troubleshooting page, it’s difficult to say why.

However, with Xbox Game Bar issues following Windows Update 1903, it’s possible the broadcast feature is broken. Worse still, it might not be reinstated.

Unfortunately, the only solution to this is to broadcast to another service.

Repair, Reset, and Uninstall the Xbox Game Bar

If you don’t have any issues listed above but the Xbox Game Bar has suddenly stopped working, try these fixes. Use them one at a time, in the order presented.

1. Repair the Xbox Game Bar

It’s easy to repair the Xbox Game Bar. Press Start and enter game bar to display the app, then choose App Settings.

Check the app settings of the Xbox Game Bar

Look for Repair and click the button. Wait while Windows repairs the Xbox Game Bar.

2. Reset the Xbox Game Bar

Similarly, you can reset the Game Bar. This is like a Windows reset, but based purely on the app. To do this, navigate to the App Settings screen for Xbox Game Bar, this time clicking Reset.

Again, wait while the app is reset, then try using it again.

3. Disable Xbox Game Bar

Another option is to disable the Xbox Game Bar. This won’t repair it, but will at least stop you using it. To do this…

  1. Press WIN+R to open the Run box. Enter regedit then OK.
  2. Next, browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\GameDVR(you can copy this string and paste it into the Registry Editor address bar).
  3. Right-click AppCaptureEnabled and select DWORD, then set the Value to 0. This will disable the feature.
  4. Browse to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\System\GameConfigStore. Right-click GameDVR_Enabled and select DWORD, again changing the value to 0.
Registry Editor in Windows 10

(Should you need to re-enable, change the DWORD values back to 1.)

4. Reinstall Xbox Game Bar

Now, this option is pretty extreme, intending that you uninstall then reinstall the Game Bar.

Begin by right-clicking Start, then select Windows PowerShell (Admin). Next, copy and paste this command:

        Get-AppxPackage *xboxapp* | Remove-AppxPackage

This will remove the Game Bar from Windows. Restart your computer to complete the action. With the system back up, open the Windows Store and reinstall Xbox Game Bar.

If this doesn’t work and your Xbox Game Bar is still unresponsive, consider drastic action. It’s time to learn how to reset and repair Windows 10.

Xbox Game Bar: Fixable, But Don’t Rely on It

Following a strong start, the Xbox Game Bar has become a fixture for many Windows 10 gamers. But sadly, it’s not perfect, and it’s prone to bugs or unpredictable behavior. The good news is that you can fix the Xbox Game Bar… if you’re lucky.

To be honest, Microsoft shouldn’t be shipping an app that is so flakey. While most of these fixes will work most of the time, we can’t guarantee they will. Indeed, you might end up abandoning the Xbox Game Bar altogether.
