Maximum file size for session «Circular Kernel Context Logger» reached
Hello, I have a new computer, loving it, games are running well, my audio programs are running well. I was just looking around in event viewer (silly I know) and I saw a warning and an error for this: «The maximum file size for session «Circular Kernel Context Logger» has been reached. As a result, events might be lost (not logged) to file «C:\WINDOWS\system32\WDI\LogFiles\ShutdownCKCL.etl». The maximum files size is currently set to 20971520 bytes. «
Now as I said I have things running awesome now for everything I use my computer for, I was just curious to see a warning and error in Event Viewer for this.
Should I just ignore this as it doesn’t seem to be bothering anything on the computer? or effecting what I am doing? I have zero critical errors right now in event viewer, was just curious if I should ignore this or if there is a fix for it. I usually just ignore event viewer unless its critical event, but thought I would ask. Thanks for any information, cheers!

Session «Circular Kernel Context Logger» stopped due to the following error: 0xC0000188
This file, «C:\WINDOWS\system32\WDI\LogFiles\ShutdownCKCL.etl», is set by default to Max 20 MB and neither circular or append options are allowed. The file, for some reason, is extremely protected.
Now in my case the file grows very fast and fills the event log pretty much, consequently I need to set the file, at least to Max 40 MB or leave it to the original 20 MB and set it to circular.
The protection in the registry is also extremely tied the only one with write permission is Trustedinstaller.
The owner is set to System but no write permission. There is someone who can solve this mystery.

since last night when my computer crashed, ive been having incredibly slow start ups. the log in page alone takes like 30-40 seconds, and the desktop icons wont show up for a while. looking into event viewer, i do have a lot of errors upon start up, more noticeably «The maximum file size for session «PerfDiag Logger» has been reached. As a result, events might be lost (not logged) to file «C:\Windows\system32\WDI\LogFiles\ShutdownPerfDiagLogger.etl». The maximum files size is currently set to 20971520 bytes.» and a few other errors. additionally, i tend to have high cpu temps for a bit after start up. any idea what i can do? all specs noted down in my bio, i have yet to update bios, and i can send any more needed info!

i did try to boot my computer up now and it seems to be okay, but i wanted to report the problem here anyway
i have done malware scans and i do not believe that is the problem here. i truly do believe it was my temps. earlier i had a post on my cpu temps, and after i solved it i tried to push my pc by running quite a few applications at once, which wouldn’t had been done before. the result was this crash with the white flash after like an hour or so.

1.Check for hardware problems by performing a hardware diagnostic test.
2.Update device drivers to the latest version.
3.Check for software conflicts by performing a clean boot.
4.Disable all overclocking settings in the BIOS.
5.Check for malware or viruses by performing a full system scan.
You can compare system events (I use EventLook program), at least System(local) and Application(local) and check temperatures at idle and with different loads.

The internet advises (seems reasonable to me) :
1.Check for hardware problems by performing a hardware diagnostic test.
2.Update device drivers to the latest version.

4.Disable all overclocking settings in the BIOS.

hihi, thank you! my overclock settings are disabled by default, a malware scan has been done, i have checked for all drivers, how would i go about doing a hardware scan? i have one inbuilt in MSI centre, and it seemed to work fine other than the device testing, other than 2 audio devices i had purposely disabled in device manager.
about the clean boot, what would that do?
also, the issue seems to have been resolved now, but im unsure if it will happen again upon crashing.

PS: Even with 100% disk health it is not a bad idea to check it. Run the short test first. If this fails, replace the disk ASAP before it is totally damaged and you lose everything. If it passes, you may run the long test to confirm your disk is OK. If it finds some bad sectors you can run check disk from Windows to mark them and not use them. Data are relocated to good sectors, if there is enough free space.

Do the actions suggested above, but check your disk space as well. If it is too low, then Windows don’t have enough space for the swap file (virtual memory), temporary files and other functions and have to wait for some space to be freed. Frequent waits create a long queue and many delays. If you have enough free disk space, check your disk’s health with a utility such as Hard Disk Sentinel or Crystal Disk Info (make sure you download the disk info rather than the system info). Anything lower than 95% should alert you to backup your data and consider replacing the hard disk or SSD. If it is still under Warranty, don’t hesitate, backup your data and return it to the shop for a free replacement.PS: Even with 100% disk health it is not a bad idea to check it. Run the short test first. If this fails, replace the disk ASAP before it is totally damaged you you lose everything. If it passes, you may run the long test to confirm your disk is OK. If it finds some bad sectors you can run check disk from Windows to mark them and not use them.
Re. 95% — you are misinterpreting what it means. IT DOES NOT MEAN 5% of drive is unusable.
Every drive has a nominal write capacity set by drive manufacturer. The 95% just means you have written 5% of the drives nominal write capacity. You only need to worry when figure gets very low say 20%.
Even then, it is rather bs as most drives perform well beyond the nominal drive capacity. That figure is set artificially low by vendors so if you get to 0 in warranty period you cannot make a warrant claim
This is similar to car warranties 5 years or 60000 miles whichever comes first — again bs as most cars are easily good for 100,000+ miles these days).
So 95% means drive is hardly used.

im not completeluy sure if this is a BSOD problem or what exactly it was, so i kept it under general help
Please run the V2 log collector > post a share link
Device testing result failed.
The links via google search MSI center result did not display the type of the device test used.
Any information whether DST, generic, surface scan, SMART, etc.?
Run Sea Tools long generic > post image or share link

disk space seems to be fine, where would i get these disk health utilities?

MSI Centre seems to have a built in SSD checker, and its at healthy!

4) Check for overclocking or temperature problems
overclocking by default is disabled by MSI, but i went ahead and checked my bios and the overclocking protection is indeed still active. however, i have had troubles with temperatures in the past and i believe that is the leading cause to the sudden shut downs.
as for 5 and 6, ill get to thqta afterwards.

also, after all the tests today, ive been getting sudden spikes of disk usage and cpu temps. they are back to how they were before, and now my temps have risen again. do you know whta the cause would be?
for my temps, i have MSI center to moniter it, would that not work well?

I haven’t had issues since i applied my fixes and posted this solution.
Nor have I seen the problematic log since I changed it.
Step 1 of the kernel change:
Open the event Viewer, you can do that from hitting the windows key and typing «Event Viewer»
Step 2: Open the correct view, Check to see if we are seeing the same naughty log.
Select the Administrative Events view which should be under custom views.
This is a pretty good combination of reports from many different places, giving us a good timeline.
Step 3: Example of logs:
3a: Pair of logs:
Note the time the last time you had a driver crash when playing World of Warcraft and look for that rough time.
A good indication will be looking for logs that say «display».
Here is an example of the pair of logs i found that led me to make this change.
3b: Display log (4101) indicating driver crash and recovery aka «black screen»
Display Warning
3c: Mystery «Kernel-EventTracing» (1) log referencing «RSXTraceSession»
The Kernel log continuously popped up after a driver crash while playing this game and as a result i saw this log as part of a pair each time I saw a driver crash log. So i made the assumption they are connected.
Solution starts here:
Step 4: Increasing the size of the event tracing log.
Navigate in the Event Viewer, using the left hand panel:
Applications and Services Logs
—>Microsoft
—>Windows
—>Kernel-EventTracing
Step 5: Open the properties of the Admin log under Kernel-EventTracing by right clicking it and selecting «properties» from the menu
Step 6: Modify the size
Default size will be 1024KB
I changed it to 11008KB which is just the nearest to 1000 that is a multiple of 64.
If you change it to 1000KB and select apply, it will warn you and adjust it to the closest multiple of 64kb.
-Change the Maximum Log size ( KB to 11008
Select «OK» at the bottom of the window to apply this change.
The rest of the settings on this window are default, but it should be set to overwrite older events as needed.
This fix was gleaned as it is the solution to address other log issues that have file size issues, is it perfect? no. But it worked for me.
This completes the fix: Bonus are my adrenaline settings which i referenced as the other half of my fix, as i changed both at once.
Radeon Settings
Hope this helps and resolves some issues, if it does or doesn’t, please let the thread know.
