I have used Windows Movie Maker on Windows 7 to make photo slideshows. It worked quite well. With a few clicks, you can produce professional quality slideshows that you can burn to DVDs. When I tried to run the program the first time, I got this error message:

Sorry, Movie Maker can’t start. Make sure your computer meets the minimum system requirements before trying to start Movie Maker again, and the try to update the driver for your video card if Move Maker still doesn’t start.

The message also provides two links for you to troubleshoot the problem. Before I checked the links, I remembered that the Movie Maker was installed before  the Windows 8 upgrade. I tried to download the latest version and install it. Unfortunately, it did not work, either. I received the same error message. I have used Movie Maker on this machine before, so I am pretty sure my computer meets the minimum requirement. I am also pretty sure that my video card driver is up to date because I just updated it a few days ago for Angry Birds. I tried the second link provided by the error message and found a solution to my problem. According to this post, I have to run Movie Maker in compatibility mode. If you are not sure how to do this, here are the step-by-step instructions.

1. Press Windows key + E to run Windows Explorer.
2. Navigate to this directory: C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Photo Gallery if you have 64 bit Windows 8. Otherwise, navigate to this directory. C:\Program Files\Windows Live\Photo Gallery
3. Right click on MovieMaker.exe and select Properties.
4. Click on Compatibility tab. Check the box “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” and select Windows 7.
5. Click on OK to close the dialog.

Windows movie maker has stopped working is a common error when you edit or render a video on Moviemaker. In this article, we will find the reason behind this error and different methods to fix it.

Movie Maker is an inbuilt tool to create short movies, slideshows, and simple videos without any advanced editing tool. It is like the first teenage love for movie editing and creating slide shows and movies.

How to Fix Movie Maker Has Stopped Working Issue

1. Locate the shortcut icon of Windows movie maker on your desktop.

2. Right-click on the icon and select “Properties.”

3. Select the “Compatibility” tab on the window.

4. Check the box ” Run this program in compatibility mode.”

5. The drop-down menu will activate itself.

a). From there, select Windows 7 if you are using Windows 8/8.1

b). If you are using Windows 7, select Windows Vista ( Service pack 1 or 2).

c). On Windows Vista, Windows XP ( Service Pack 1, 2, or 3).

You need to lower down the Windows version for the movie maker. After that, click “Apply” and “OK” to save the changes. You may need to restart your PC.

Note: If the Windows movie maker shortcut is unavailable on your desktop, then browse the Windows directories to find the movie maker and create a shortcut on the desktop.

The installation path for Windows movie maker is-

C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Live\Photo Gallery\ inside this folder, you will find MovieMaker.exe.

Right-click on MovieMaker.exe and create a shortcut on the desktop. After that, perform the above steps to fix the error.

2. Malware Scan To Fix Movie Maker Error

Changing the compatibility works in most cases. If this doesn’t work for you anyhow and you are still getting the same error or similar error like “A problem caused the program to stop working correctly” on the movie maker, then you need to check your Windows PC for possible malware.

Different types of malware can stop movie maker from working correctly. Even if you have an antivirus installed, malware can skip the antivirus.

You may have another user account on your computer. Login to 2nd user account and check if the movie maker is working for other users. If it is working, the first user account has missing permission for the movie maker.

To get the permission back, you need to follow these steps.

1. Go to the “Properties” of the movie maker shortcut.
2. Select the “Security” tab.
3. Go to the Advanced option, and another Window will pop up.

1. Inside the Advanced Security Setting, Change the ownership to the current user.
2. Click on Change and select your User Name on the next Window.

Hit Apply and Ok to all the dialog boxes.

Now check; if it were a user permission issue, the movie maker would work fine now.

4. Fix Corrupt Windows Files

If the above three solutions don’t work, there may be corrupt Windows files. We have no idea which file/s is corrupt, so we need to scan the entire Windows files and repair them.

We need to fix the unknown corrupt files using the inbuilt Windows Scanner. Follow the steps given below.

1. Go to Start Menu and search for cmd or command prompt.
2. Highlight cmd and right-click on it.
3. Click on “Run as administrator.“

It will open the command prompt as an administrator. Ensure you have logged in to the Admin user account, not the standard one.

Inside the cmd, type “sfc /scannow” and press enter on your keyboard. The System File Checker (SFC) will scan and repair corrupt files.

If it can’t repair, you may need to insert Windows Installation Media to repair corrupt files.
