Running Man (Icon)
AIM (AOL Instant Messenger) was an instant messaging and presence computer program created by AOL, which used theproprietary OSCAR instant messaging protocol and the TOC protocol to allow registered users to communicate in real time.
AIM was popular from the late 1990s to the late 2000s in North America, and was the leading instant messaging application in that region. AIM’s popularity declined steeply in the early 2010s as Internet social networks like Facebook and Twitter gained popularity, and its fall has often been compared with other once-popular Internet services such as Myspace.[1]
Running AIM Guy
In June 2015, AOL was acquired by Verizon Communications.[2][3] In June 2017, Verizon combined AOL and Yahoo into its subsidiary Verizon Media (formally Oath Inc). The company discontinued AIM as a service on December 15, 2017.[4]
History[]
Development and Launch[]
AIM was initially developed as an unauthorized skunkworks project at AOL by a small team led by Barry Appelman, Eric Bosco, and Jerry Harris. The project, originally codenamed «SuperBuddy,» was developed without official approval from AOL management. The team created the service by building upon AOL’s existing messaging infrastructure that was previously only available to AOL subscribers.
AIM was officially launched as a standalone application in May 1997, separate from the main AOL service. This allowed users who weren’t AOL subscribers to use the messaging service, which significantly expanded its potential user base. The initial version included core features such as buddy lists, instant messaging, and away messages.
Rise to Dominance[]
By 1998, AIM had emerged as the dominant instant messaging platform in the United States. Its popularity coincided with the rapid expansion of home internet access, and it quickly became an essential communication tool, particularly among teenagers and young adults.
During its peak in the early 2000s, AIM reported having more than 100 million registered users, and over 53 million active users. The service handled more than 1.5 billion instant messages per day at the height of its popularity.
The «IM Wars»[]
As AIM’s popularity grew, competing services from Microsoft (MSN Messenger, later Windows Live Messenger), Yahoo! (Yahoo! Messenger), and ICQ attempted to gain market share. This period became known as the «IM Wars,» with AOL fighting to maintain its dominance.
A major aspect of this competition involved interoperability. Microsoft and Yahoo! attempted to make their services compatible with AIM, allowing their users to communicate with AIM users without needing an AIM account. AOL consistently blocked these attempts by updating the proprietary OSCAR protocol, citing security concerns.
Decline[]
AIM’s decline began in the mid-2000s with the rise of social networking sites like Facebook and MySpace, which incorporated their own messaging features. The shift to mobile platforms also impacted AIM’s user base, as SMS text messaging and later smartphone messaging apps provided alternatives.
By 2011, AIM’s market share had fallen dramatically. In 2012, AOL began significant layoffs in the AIM division. The service continued to lose relevance as platforms like Facebook Messenger, WhatsApp, and later Snapchat dominated the messaging landscape.
Shutdown[]
On October 5, 2017, AOL announced that AIM would be discontinued on December 15, 2017. After a 20-year run, AIM officially shut down, marking the end of an era in internet communication. The company cited changing communication preferences as the reason for the shutdown, acknowledging that people had moved on to other platforms.
Features[]
Core Features[]
AIM’s primary function was real-time text communication between users, but it incorporated numerous features that enhanced the basic messaging experience:
- Buddy List: A list of contacts organized by groups that showed which friends were online, away, or offline
- Instant Messages: Real-time text conversations with individual contacts
- Away Messages: Custom status updates that would display when a user was away from their computer
- User Profiles: Customizable information pages where users could share details about themselves
- File Sharing: The ability to send files directly to contacts
- Chat Rooms: Public and private group chat spaces
- Buddy Icons: Custom avatar images users could set for their profile
Notable Features and Evolution[]
Throughout its existence, AIM introduced numerous features that evolved the platform:
- AIM Expressions: Introduced in 2003, this allowed users to customize their chat window with different themes and sounds
- AIM Bots: Automated programs that could respond to messages, with SmarterChild being the most famous
- AIM Pages: A social networking feature added in 2006 similar to MySpace
- AIM Mail: An email service integrated with the AIM client
- Lifestream: Added in 2008, this feature consolidated updates from social networks like Facebook and Twitter
- SMS Integration: Allowed users to send messages to mobile phones
- Voice Chat: Voice communication capabilities added in later versions
- Video Chat: One-to-one video conferencing added to compete with Skype
- Mobile Applications: Versions for various mobile platforms including iOS and Android
Technical Details[]
Protocols[]
AIM primarily used two protocols:
- OSCAR (Open System for CommunicAtion in Realtime): The proprietary protocol that handled most AIM functions, including messaging, presence information, and chat rooms
- TOC (Talk to OSCAR): A simplified protocol that was easier to implement but had fewer features
AOL kept the OSCAR protocol proprietary and actively worked to prevent reverse engineering by competitors. However, third-party clients like Pidgin (formerly Gaim), Trillian, and Adium eventually created compatible implementations through reverse engineering.
Clients[]
While the official AIM client was the most popular way to access the service, AOL developed several variants:
- AIM Express: A web-based version that ran in a browser without requiring installation
- AOL Instant Messenger (Mobile): Versions for various mobile operating systems
- AIM Pro: A business-oriented version with enhanced security and integration with Microsoft Outlook
- MacOS and iOS Clients: Native applications for Apple products
- AIM for Android: Native application for Android devices
Cultural Impact[]
Communication Patterns[]
AIM significantly influenced how people communicated online:
- The concept of «presence» (knowing when someone is online and available) became a standard feature in digital communication
- Away messages evolved into a form of self-expression and a precursor to social media status updates
- The platform popularized real-time digital conversation as a primary mode of social interaction
Terminology and Internet Slang[]
AIM helped popularize numerous terms and abbreviations that became part of internet culture:
- A/S/L (Age/Sex/Location): A common greeting in chat rooms and initial conversations
- BRB (Be Right Back), AFK (Away From Keyboard), and other status-related terms
- LOL (Laugh Out Loud), ROFL (Rolling On Floor Laughing), and other expression shorthand
- The term «IM» or «IMing» as a verb for digital messaging
Media and Pop Culture[]
AIM’s cultural significance was reflected in numerous ways:
- The distinctive sounds of the service (the door opening/closing sounds, message notifications) became recognized audio cues
- The «Running Man» logo became an iconic symbol of early internet culture
- AIM was frequently referenced in television shows, movies, and music of the era
- Screen names and away messages became important elements of personal identity for a generation
Legacy[]
Despite its discontinuation, AIM left a lasting legacy on digital communication:
- Many features pioneered or popularized by AIM became standard in subsequent messaging platforms
- The concept of «always-on» communication that AIM helped establish remains central to modern digital interaction
- For many users who came of age in the late 1990s and early 2000s, AIM represents a formative digital experience
- AIM helped establish instant messaging as a distinct and important mode of communication separate from email and phone calls
The platform is now remembered as a pivotal technology that helped shape online social interaction and digital communication norms that continue to influence current messaging platforms and social media.
Easter Eggs and Hidden Features[]
Throughout its history, AIM contained several hidden features and easter eggs:
- The «/pizza» command, which would open a browser window to Pizza Hut’s website
- Hidden debug commands accessible through undocumented keyboard shortcuts
- The mysterious «AOLSystem» user that occasionally appeared in user lists but couldn’t be messaged
- Various sound scheme easter eggs hidden within the application files
