Windows 10 October 2018 Update^[1] (also known as version 1809^[2] and codenamed «Redstone 5») is the sixth major update to Windows 10 and the fifth in a series of updates under the Redstone codenames. It carries the build number 10.0.17763.

The first preview was released to Insiders on February 14, 2018. The update was originally made available to public consumers on October 2, 2018,^[3]^[4] but its rollout was halted on October 6, 2018, due to a serious bug that deletes users’ personal files after updating.^[5]^[6]^[7] On October 9, 2018, Microsoft re-released the update to Insiders, stating that all known issues in the update (including file deletion bug) had been identified and fixed.^[8]^[9] On October 25, 2018, Microsoft confirmed the existence of another bug which overwrites files without any confirmation, when extracting from a ZIP file.^[10] The ZIP bug was fixed for Insiders on October 30, 2018,^[11] and the public rollout of the update resumed on November 13, 2018.^[12]^[13]

Its 64-bit (x86-64) version is the first to use DVD-ROM DL media for installation.

The update has reached end of service on November 10, 2020 for Home, Pro, Pro Education, Pro for Workstations and IoT Core editions.^[14] The Enterprise, IoT Enterprise and Education editions have reached end of service on May 11, 2021.^[15] The Enterprise LTSC, IoT Enterprise LTSC and IoT Core LTSC editions will reach end of service on January 9, 2029.^[16]

Поддержка Windows 10 1809 прекратится в мае

Компания Microsoft опубликовала на своём сайте предупреждение в разделе поддержки о скором конце жизненного цикла для операционной системы Windows 10 версии 1809.

Microsoft отправляет под нож версию Windows 10, выпущенную чуть больше года назад

Данная версия вышла в ноябре 2018 года и получила название Windows 10 October 2018 update. Её поддержка для обычных пользователей продлится до 12 мая 2020 года.

12 мая 2020 года поддержка прекратится для версий Windows 10 Home (Домашняя) Windows 10 Pro, Windows 10 Pro for Education, Windows 10 Pro for Workstations и Windows 10 IoT Core.

После этой даты данные версии перестанут получать обновления безопасности. Microsoft советует перейти на более свежие версии Windows для того, чтобы поддерживать безопасность системы.

Отметим, что Windows 10 версии 1809 оказалась весьма проблемной. Её распространение было даже временно остановлено из-за удаляющихся без спроса файлов пользователей. Также пользователи столкнулись с проблемами с драйверами и процессорами Intel.

Поддержка следующего крупного обновления Windows 10 — версии 1903 или Windows 10 May 2019 Update продлится до декабря 2020 года, а Windows 10 версии 1909, вышедшего в минувшем ноябре — до мая 2021 года.

If you use Windows 10 Home or Pro and you’re still on version 1809, it’s time to move onto a newer version of Windows 10. Today, the two-year-old version of the OS is getting its last cumulative update. Originally, support was supposed to end in the spring, but due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Microsoft extended it by six months.

Being a fall update, version 1809 is actually supported for 30 months if you’re using Windows 10 Enterprise or Windows 10 Education. Those users will still be supported until May.

If you’re on version 1809, you’ve probably had to do some work to stay that way. The way that feature updates work is that Microsoft automatically upgrades you if the version you’re on is nearing the end of support. Windows 10 version 1809 has been nearing the end of support for about a year. Last December, Microsoft started automatically upgrading users on version 1809 to version 1909, and then after support was extended, it started automatically upgrading users again in June, this time to version 2004.

But also, keep in mind that feature updates are optional (if you’re not nearing the end of support) today because of Windows 10 version 1809, also known as the October 2018 Update. The update was objectively terrible at the time of release. Microsoft went ahead and skipped over the Release Preview ring of testing just so it could announce the release at that year’s Surface event. Within four days, the feature update was pulled due to a variety of issues, the most significant of which being that some users’ files were getting deleted upon upgrading. Over a month later, the Windows 10 October 2018 Update was re-released.

It took a while to get Windows 10 version 1809 on track, but starting with version 1903, Microsoft reformed how feature updates are delivered. Before that, the company considered anyone who clicked ‘Check for updates’ in Windows Update a ‘seeker’, so that person would get the new feature update, even if they were looking for the latest Patch Tuesday update. Starting with version 1903, they’d be greeted with a message that says the feature update is ready to install, and there would be a link where you’d be able to explicitly choose to opt into installing it. The only way you’d be automatically upgraded at all is if the version you’re on is nearing the end of support.

Not only did this finally give users the control over updates that they desired, but it also represented a shift in how Microsoft wants to handle Windows 10 updates. Prior to that, there was a really hard push to have everyone on the latest version. But now, we’re seeing things like the new Edge browser and WinUI, which are pushing new features to Windows 10 but are rolling out to older versions as well.

Changing how updates were delivered weren’t the only changes that ended up happening though. We got the Windows 10 dashboard pages, which are constantly updated with any known issues, what version they were introduced in, what version they were fixed in, and more. Also, after that, we started getting major updates in the spring and minor, more refined feature updates in the fall.

Now, the next version nearing the end of support is 1903, and the end of life for the Windows 10 May 2019 Update is less than a month away, thanks to 1809 support being extended. Moreover, Microsoft only announced last week that it was going to start automatically upgrading users to a newer version. Windows 10 version 22H2 is currently the latest version and will be so for the remaining time. As announced by Microsoft, all Windows 10 operating systems will reach End of Life on 14th October 2025. It is likely that Windows 10 users will be forced to upgrade to the latest Windows version.

Previously, Microsoft released 2 versions each year for Windows 10, where one was released in the first half of the year, and the second in the second half. These were initially named after the year and the month they were released in. For example, Windows 10 version 1903 is named so because it was scheduled to be released in 2019 in the 3rd month (March). However, since the timeline wasn’t always perfect, the naming nomenclature later changed to using “H1” and “H2”, depicting the first and the second half of the year, respectively. This led to Windows versions being named as “21H2” and “22H2”.

Microsoft then changed the release schedule in 2021 and decided to release only one major Windows version every year. This eliminated the “H1” release every year and only the “H2” was released.

With many different Windows 10 versions available, each of them also has different editions. Windows 10 offers, the following editions: Home, Professional, Education, Enterprise, and IoT. Like its ancestors, the Education and Enterprise editions have longer servicing durations than the rest. However, all Windows 10 editions and versions will reach End of Life in 2025.

Normally, the Windows 10 versions released in the first half of the year usually received eighteen months of servicing, while the version released in the second half received 18 or 30 months (for Enterprise and Education editions) of servicing.

Understanding the concept of end of life for Microsoft Windows

While Microsoft follows modern lifecycle policy, which means that the devices on the latest Windows versions will be supported indefinitely, there are three main types of end of support/life dates:

End of mainstream support

This means Microsoft will not provide incident support, warranty claims, feature requests, or non-security related requests after the end of mainstream support.

No more free incident support.
No more warranty claims.
No more design changes and feature requests.
No more non-security hotfixes.

Usually, Microsoft provides 3 years of mainstream support after the product is discontinued.

End of extended support

The end of extended support means the following:

No more security updates
No more paid support
No more updated content (Knowledgebase etc.)

End of Long Term Service Channel support (LTSC)

LTSC channel is designed so that the product is treated as a stand-alone product. LTSC products features and functionality do not change throughout their lifecycle. These products only get security updates throughout their lifetime.

Microsoft supports LTSC releases for 10 years. However, in the case of Windows 10, the last LTSC release was Windows 10 21H2 LTSC, whose support will be ending in 2025 as well.

Windows 10 Extended Security Update (ESU) Program

Microsoft now offers a subscription-based paid security update program for all Windows 10 versions well beyond its End of Life in October 2025. Individual users, as well as organizations, will be able to pay a monthly fee for security updates for an additional 3 years after Microsoft no longer supports it.

Note that this program will only offer security updates, which means that no new features or fixes will be offered beyond October 2025.

The security updates will patch up critical and important vulnerabilities that have been or can be exploited in the real world. Therefore, it is recommended that devices that cannot upgrade to Windows 11 subscribe to the Windows 10 ESU program to ensure that their devices are secure from online threats.

Microsoft is yet to disclose the pricing and the exact date till the ESU program for Windows 10 will be supported.
